Yes, I think the ambivalence of respect and annoyance gets it about right, Cynthia. Also, this is one of 4 or 5 poems I;ve done about him recently in which different things get emphasised and maybe a more balanced picture is drawn. I'll post my poem CHEMO which you might find an intersting contrast.

Dermot, I really like this. Sure, it may need some 'tidying', but then it might lose its erratic charm, its twisted velocity. Brilliance lines set in a sea of mediocre words leap out at the reader - and I think this is intentional strategy.

Re: WHISKEY -It was not a rant as I understand the term. And, yes, the ambivalence did come through - respect and annoyance in equal measure. So the decanting was sly, a bit of 'up your nose with a rubber hose'. I love it! I know a lady who has an aging Polish husband. For his personal health, she changed over years ago from real high-fat, high-spice Polish sausage (which he swore was the only sausage worth eating) to a turkey substitute which he enjoys immensely, still with comments about 'the real thing'. Not exactly your point, but close enough for me to greatly appreciate the humour of your poem.

He IS cute isn't he? I think he's pondering on his next blogg -

Ode to a Carrot.

Oh, carrot, how I do love thee!
T'would make my life sublime
to make thee mine!

Oh carrot, I put no-one above thee!
Not dandelion nor lettuce sweet. . .
or even Ann Foxgloves peas!
(got my eye on those!!)

Oh carrot! How I do love thee!
And it's such a lark -
when I eat you . . .
I can see in the dark!

Mr Soppy(moi)
keeps his eye on two 'wabbits'belonging to the family
of a 'novelty loving child'who rarely tends to or
plays with them.the previous family in this rented
property did exactly the same.

unbeknown to me they moved out
leaving the rabbit to starve to death.
it wont happen again on my watch!
the latest bunnies by agreement with their family
get regular'ish' food
I supplement that-everyday-with dandelion
leaves(which they adore) and daily changes of
drinking water.best to you-

Hi Cynthia, thanks for your kind comments on Crossing Place, I suppose I have a different view on death to most, being mainly pragmatic about it after almost coming to grief some years ago. Sometimes working with terminally ill people I find I am able to talk naturally about the subject when others prefer to run a mile. I suppose the main idea for this poem came from the juxtaposition of its former use and present situation as thoroughfares of different kinds. Thanks again.

Hi Greg, I did visit the Paul Weller display - interesting wiggle into local history about which I felt much better informed especially after being demobbed into this area quite a while back from Pirbright.

I mentioned my visit to a local character who remembers well the man and his group way back to their rehearsal days in local pubs when the music proved too loud for some hard drinking dissenters who weren't very polite to said musicians.

I suppose the fact that PW politely turned down the offer of a CBE speaks volumes about the man. Liked some of his poems too.

Hi Cynthia Thanks for the comments. This is one of several poems about my father-in-law. It was touch and go whether he would reach 80 because he has cancer. It's hard for me to know how others might react to these poems. They are part of my ongoing exploration of Irishness and my own 2nd generation identity. My father-in-law is a very decent man, but we have spent a lifetime arguing about nationalism and I have less and less patience with it. This is all part of the subtext here. I don't know if this makes any sense or whether it just seems a rant.I wouldn't like anyone to think I am mocking him, but he has always made such a fuss about only drinking Irish whiskey without even trying scotch. that it was alot easier to get him to finish that bottle by passing it off as 'the real mackoy'.

It is a riddle, I agree, but may not be as self-indulgent as it first appears. I wonder if the writer speaks to an unborn child, or even to a single sperm, inviting its attachment to the female egg - inception. That would 'explain' the intense self-focus, the sense of longing.
