Why did they never smile in old photographs? Or rather, why do they always smile nowadays? We can't delve back into a mentality that we can never know. Just a heap of questions and few answers. A photo hints at much and tells so little. I think this poem captures that. Nice work, do you have Greek ancestry BTW?

I feel the same, MC, that the years of my youth seemed far simpler times. But I wonder if this is the perspective of the aged? Will my kids, for instance, look back in 40 years time at their lives as they are today and see them as “far simpler times”?
And I have to say that, on balance, I support the protection of sites like Stonehenge through restricted access. English Heritage’s on-site educational support is extremely good too.
What does perplex me though on the aspect of caravanning is that I along with others am allowed to lug one at 60mph on public roads with no instruction or validation of my competence.

It is encouraging to hear of all these national events. In my small town of 5000 souls there will be readings given by local people of their poems in the local public library. It has become an annual event and well attended.

number of bike trips around that under-estimated county. In those
days places like Stonehenge were free of the tourist label, charges
and protective barriers. Happy, more innocent, less confined and

Agree with the atmosphere being really present in the poem. I like autumn as well, but have noticed most people don't. In Italy the summers are often uncomfortably hot, so autumn is a relief, sunny and warm but heat not a problem. There are also chestnuts, the olives, porcini mushrooms, and new wine and olvie oil as consolation!

I can't think of anything more comforting than wearing an item of clothes from a loved one. Here in the UK we are buying 30% more clothes than 10 years ago, some fast fashion items have a life of only 3 weeks before going into land fill.....and six year olds in developing countries are working 14 hour days to pick the cotton to feed our avarice.
The fabric of society

Our earth is held together
And yet is torn apart,
By spider webs of commerce
With neither soul nor heart.

We buy cheap clothes in Britain
And claim material needs
Whilst in Bangladesh and India
Children suffer for our greed.

The leisure wear we chill in
Comes at a heavy price
As youngsters toil for fourteen hours
Their leisure sacrificed.

Fast fashion’s what they call it,
It’s here and then…. it’s gone,
Made with cotton picked by infants,
In the cruel, blazing sun.

It’s the must-have £8 hoodie,
it’s the bargain £1 tee
Produced by wage-slave labour
In those hell hole factories,

Where workers live and eat and sleep
So desperate to be free ,
There are none so blind
As don’t want to see.

I’ve only got one body and just one set of feet
I don’t need twenty T-Shirts to make my life complete,
Or 3 more sets of trainers or 10 more pairs of shoes,
They call it fast fashion…. I call it lose- lose.

So beneath my cotton duvet, a soft pillow at my head
I reflect on all the children - cold hard floors for beds,
Asleep beneath machines with their life stealing beats,
Can we join hands and fight fast fashion on our streets?

Another welcome chuckle from this always dependable source of
entertainment, information and discourse (yes, I said DIS-course!).
I had a static caravan on a coastal site in Devon (county of birth
where numerous relations still live) and enjoyed it for the sheer
convenience of being able to pack up the car and get out of town
whenever I felt the need for a change and the pleasures of the seaside with all its old memories. I wouldn't go for the sort that
gets towed.(being stuck behind one on the A303 has never been my idea of fun!)..and would probably settle for a VW caravanette or similar instead, but I readily recognise the appeal of instant
travel of a self-contained nature that is on hand at any time.
There's a special freedom that appeals -
The sort that comes equipped with wheels!! ?

This is a really clever piece of work Jason. Repetitive poems can be very effective but have you tried reading it using the "take my' words only every other line.

"Take my hand, I broke it forging chains that bind me, my head, I broke on the Jagged rocks"

I think it reads better that way imho only go course.
