I really like this, and not that I am in any way qualified to talk about poetry, but that last verse seemed to tail off a little. I love the first two lines, and also that last couple of lines, but the filling doesn't sit as gleefully with me as the rest of it did :) I bet this is ace read out loud

Love the subject, lovely little crafted poem.
Lines of male ending/upstroke iambic tetrameter followed by alternate lines of female ending iambic trimeter.
Really good use of sibilance in the opening lines.
The poem has a great feel/cadence with the trimeter lines falling as they do. It conveys a sense of solemnity or loss that is very much appropriate.
I love the syntax reversal in the last line of the first stanza and also like the way this echos the second line in the stanza which itself has the more modern syntax.
Sometimes a middle-English type of line affords a beauty that modern day syntax simply doesn't allow for. While some may sniff at the mixing of the too and decry a lack of continuity, I really like it and guess you do as well John.
To me it is like have a building that brings together the best of differing periods of architecture- tastefully done it's great.
The only thing that could be said (subjectively) is...could another two lines be contrived in place of the word But...just to make it a perfect sequence?
Is that asking for too much or indeed is it what the poet would want?
Either way- lovely little crafted poem.
P.S Sorry for banging on.
My Best
Chris

Thank you dear Chris! This poem has come out of my heart in a moment. May be you know that I take part in all competitions here on the site. When the theme about ghosts appeared I was a little bit confused, didn't know what to write. But...yesterday something happened, something inspired me. May be it was a call from my husband.

Thank you dear Stella for the comment. You are so right: we cannot chose. Yes, we can chose clothes or vegetables in a market but not the time of our death. Sounds sad, but ....What to do? It's life.

Thanks for your reflections on 'Mighty Love' and you are right, although not written for my child it is very maternal - I wrote it for an uncle and I was feeling very protective and maternal towards him (wanted him to know he was not alone in what he's going through). M xx

Cheers for your comment on Dissonance - I'm pleased it got you reading The Prophet again. It's one of my favourite books. It's kinda spooky but whenever I'm in 'need' of it, it falls open onto the pages that give me the most succour.

'Doing it Twice.'
Is my kind of stuff John, I really enjoyed it.
I will read more when I get my new spectacles; but am struggling a bit at present. I like the audio suggestion. As a matter of fact I am now trying to put my "Strictly for the Birds" to my three chord guitar range, doing the Carter lick similar to "A boy named Sue." I do that some tmes
at my folk club.
I'll be in touch. Tom Mc D.

excellent as normal, kealan.
you want to consider splitting the last line into a stanza by it's self as it may have more impact by itself.

Must admit I went through my Bukowski phase I guess maybe 4 years later, but he's a poet that I've read lots of people try to be inspired by etc.
On your poem, I love all the movement and colour that is it. Are you going to try and perform it - it would tie me up in knots this if I tried it, I bet.
Top stuff however.

Wigan's a tricky one for me to get to of an evening to be honest. I can't really see many opportunities arising for me to perform this poem which is why I've stuck it on here. It did take some time to write so I'd be happy for people to enjoy it in any way they can - as long as I get a namecheck at the end! Glad you liked it Isobel and Terry. Many thanks for the comments.

Then you'll have to come to the Tudor in Wigan a week on Thursday and perform it for us - or get some of us to perform it for you. I could rustle up some Wigan accents for you - or even try to sink back into a broad accent myself.
There are a lot of funny lines in this as well as history but it needs to be heard. I'm not sure how it would sound with posh Lymm accents - you are right about that. My sister once tried to put on a scottish accent to read a poem about Scotland - it sounded awful - we persuaded her to do it in 'english'.
I did enjoy this and approve of anything that puts Wigan where it deserves to be on the map - bang in the cultural centre of the North West...
One thing missing was the warmth and fiendliness of the locals (older generation at least) - you'd love the Tudor I'm sure - but don't try over stepping you 3 - 5 minutes or we'll be throwing pies at you! xx

Apparently it was videoed but we never received a copy. Performing it was quite a mammoth task and a bit daunting as neither of us are from Wigan! We didn't know how to pronounce Mesnes Park. We're from Lymm near Warrington - I think it would be nice to hear it performed with proper Wigan accents.
