HAPPINESS
Happiness
I must admit
Is when kids achieve
their measures met
Seeing them succeed
relieves all stress
As they soar from nest
my happiness.

Tugs Of The Heart
Within these lines
haste beckons me
to write these thoughts
while there's still spark
Page after page
go hastily
such meager poems
pretending art
The effort weak
skills incomplete
such offerings
should ne'er depart
Poems such as these
with quickened starts
mean minds submit
to tugs of heart.

Ton Of Bricks
It hit me like a ton of bricks
the news that I had the big C
it was too much all at once
the doc describing the condition
and all that went with it
the tests
the lab
the hospital stay
the length of radiation
the therapy
the constant back and forth
between doctors and tests
it was all too much
my head got light
I felt chills
my whole life turned ups...

WIT'S END
When you find out
the dreaded C word
has found a home in you
there is nothing funny about it
the natural inclination is to sadness
still I find humor in the condition
as I find humor in all things
especially myself
to counteract
I make myself laugh
then I make the doctors laugh
I make the nurses laugh
I leave them laughing in the aisles
and cub...

The Vast Unknown
We stare off into the vast unknown
a sea of limitless depth
and pounding waves
with denizens that cause us fear
a sea of tentacles and stinging barbs
and jagged teeth of shark
yet above it all we float
delirious in hope
our determination strong as the
taste of salt in the air
we struggle to not go under
always clinging to the raft of precious life
the sun b...

Have A Good Day
Each day is a challenge
but make sure that you're in it,
it may start out bad
but can change in a minute
No matter the difficulty
don't let it diminish,
rise above all the noise
ride it out to the finish
Know that you can win it
Just bear it and grin it,
why be pessimistic
be For, not Again it!

Do Not Resuscitate
Should anything happen to me
let it happen
do not interfere
do not postpone
do not plug me into the wall
let nature take its course
ashes to ashes
let the earth reclaim
do not blame
do not weep
do not worry
when I am called
let heaven take
so after all
don't resuscitate.

Mining Cancer
Deeper and deeper
into the hole
goes the knife
the sting of steel
against flesh
what started as a small hole
becomes a major mine
open for exploration
discovered cells disperse
seem to even multiply
more and more turn up
like fire ants
they spread their terror
5 separate times
the exploration team digs in
the hours tick away
the walls close...

Two Little Girls
I remember them as
they used to be
my two little girls
a blond and a brunette
so cute and cuddly
all dressed up in frills and bows
like two little dolls
dressed by my wife
their hair done up in curls
and as fresh as spring flowers
people would always comment
on how pretty they were
and how smart and precocious
and I the father would be so proud
it was...

Chance Of Rain---a poem by O.L. Buzzerd
A chance of rain
the weatherman says
even the paper says there is
and the weather app gadget
on this here phone agrees
see them rain pictures
but they all lie
and get away with it
because you can't sue the weather
it's more like this
today will be hot and dry
just like all the other damn days
in August in Texas
we are stuck in that rut
and if truth be...

Cast Of Characters
I have many sides
to my personality
sometimes I agree with myself
sometimes I am in conflict
a man's nature
is always a contradiction
the good, the bad, the ugly
the optimist, the pessimist
each plays a part
the plot thickens as the story continues
the Lone Ranger vs. the bad guys
Bat Man vs. The Joker
all portrayed at one time or another
in my personal ...

SILENT COUNSEL
How sad it is when moms pass away.
they are the anchor of every family
nurturing children and husbands alike
keeping the house and family together
always helping
always there
All moms are special people
and leave us with lasting memories
you will find you will think of her everyday
and recall little things she said or did
Some bit of advice given

ASHES
The longer you live
the more scars and scratches
Age is an accident
waiting to happen
When you can't find your glasses
and your socks are not matches
You've arrived at senility
eventually ashes.

The Joy Of Living
In the morning
before the sun comes up
there is that special time
when the earth is quiet and thinking
about what it will do today
will it show us rain or sun
or a cover of clouds
will it give us an overcast mood
or will it glisten with sunshine
and will it give us luck or
something to work around
a challenge or a bet
we await the day
in a...

the Social Justice Care Division
I got robbed and mugged
I called 911
asked for the police
they did not answer
would not come
instead I was routed to
the "Social Justice Care Division"
and they said they would send
a trained Social Worker
to talk to the robber
and try to make him feel better
and give him a cookie
turns out the social worker
after interviewing the robber at length

FAUX POEM
Faux is a word
that's hip, although
it's mainly fake
or false, also
don't pronounce the x
just let it go,
it's French you know
how apropos!

MASKED MEN
According to a recent study
mandatory face masks will be required
for the next 20 years
soon we will forget
how people lived without masks
the many features of a human face
will only be seen in old movies
or photos in an album
babies will be fitted with masks
and never know what
an unmasked face actually looks like
in a short time our evolving
will be uni...

THE REMOTE
It is so easy now
the little gadget does it all
use only one finger
to turn on
to change a channel
flipping back and forth
I remember when
we only had 3 channels to watch
you had to get up and physically
walk to the TV
to turn the dial
to change the channel
it was good exercise
and kept us from becoming
couch potatoes
now the multi-talented remote

I Am Not A Robot
If a robot
you are not
then pick from photos
that you got
the ones with trains
check with a click
then hit continue
results are mixed
so try again
more clicks on pics
might be a robot
if the shoe fits
then one more time
pick pics with lights
you search each frame
for ones that might
then hit continue
lucky strike
your guessed correctly

Death Delayed
To death I say
let it just wait
I'd just as soon
procrastinate
its final stage
is proof enough
the best death is
the one put off!

TIME TO GROW UP
If you need a flexible payment plan
due to circumstances taking
a toll on your finances
too bad
all that will do is postpone the inevitable
and cost you twice as much in the long run
you should have saved some money
instead of buying everything
you laid your eyes on
you didn't need that fancy Apple phone
you did not need that game system
you didn't need that 5...

TRASH DAY
Two chubby gentlemen
sit by the curb
one dressed in green
one in blue
they are portly, yet affable
and have much to talk about
concerning their past week
the odd assortment
of things they collected
they await the coming
of the truck which will
give them chills and thrills
like tourists at Disneyland
they anticipate the ride
when they will be lifted by

Our Heartfelt Thanks
Our heartfelt thanks to all those
who have entered the poetry contest
All funds raised will be given to needy poets
to buy a cup of soup and a bagel
Your generosity means
there will be even more struggling poets
many of whom intermarry
Though the contest itself is done
our begging continues
so please donate
even if you don't like poets or poetry

75 PERCENT---a poem by O.L. Buzzerd
At my old age
I am operating
at about 75%
most of the time
some days
it drops down to 50
there are days when
it's just a struggle
to walk or move
inertia is my style
sore and stiff
is the best description
everything hurts
the old legs done give out
pain is more common
than not
the knees pop
the back aches
arthritis...

Virtural World
We must meet
each other virtually
we cannot touch
but we may speak
into a screen
and so virtual we become
and so we behave
until we lose ourselves
and the virtual
becomes reality
as we passively submit
to virtual insanity
we react suspiciously
it's all a plot
to keep us down
and in lock step
it's virtually that easy.

Thunder In The Far Away
Sitting in a chair
wandering in and out of sleep
the mind so at ease
it drifts along like a leaf in a stream
suddenly
a clap of thunder cracks far away
like a firecracker going off
an exclamation point in the sky
the mind snaps back into the present
and waits
anticipates another
then from out of nowhere
thunder claps its hands
right over the ho...

PLANTS
Plants give us pleasure
to our senses appeal,
To sad eyes they are joyful
help us rightly heal,
Tranquility follows
when plants replace steel,
The more plants surround us
the better we feel.
