I like your ghazal John. I must try and write one, they can be really beautiful. But it does seem rather a daunting process! The romantic theme suits the form very well. x

Thanks for your comments on Snow on the Pass, Win. You're right, there is a real story attached to it, and the journey is Sheffield to Liverpool and back, across the Pennines. Always dodgy at this time of year. Greg

Awww! me poor(old? nay lass!)Yanty! the only advice I can give you is get a beechams down yer cakehole and double up on the baby-gro,s..even if they do clash with the yellow/green mules clacking up and down the High Street-no seriously-ahem-beechams are brill(IMHO)love the snuggy fox pikky/image-ta chudgy-Mr Snifan Wilde-xxps can I have a long distance clap for doing me monthly 24 tins of cat food donation for our local sanctuary(Bleakholt)-I bung it in their bin in Asda-which neatly leads on to a related funny incident-did the same last month as they were bringing new stock in-and put it all around the donations bin-I had to climb a dirty great mountain of boxes to put the tins in-and! got bleedin trapped between two bleedin palettes of stuff(Mr Bean or wot!)to make you laugh yer phlegm up,heres another Mr Bean tale-neighbour of ours has a sloping driveway-(upwards)and was struggling to get kiddy in pram up it cos of the ice etc-so Mr Bean to the rescue! I remembered we had a log night night before and the ash pan(as in fire ashes-not meat n two veg)was full-so I scattered a huge amount of ash all over the icy slope-to my 'orror I had completely overlooked the fact that I had also been burning lots of d-i-y bits of wood etc(there is an end to this)which in turn were full of nails and screws! I spent half an hour picking all the nails/screws out of the ash, just in time before her hubby came down in his new car-otherwise..pop!..pop!..pop!..pop! not including the spare wheel-thats in the boot-I say this because you are a pedestrian and might not know..tee hee..do I get the clowns crown for my Mr Beanings? wot a plonker! you can go back to your lemsip now-tattybye! I have a lot of respect for everyone who tackles these ghazals - but I must admit to not overly liking the form. For me emotions are best explored without constraints - the echoing of certain words and tight structure makes it artificial in some way - reduces the scope for interesting imagery, also. Just my opinion :) x

Thanks for your thoughful comments on 'Lost'. The irony of it being lost is not lost on me. :)

It was a callow effort from some years ago...long before I joined WOL. I dug it out because I admired some other Ghazals that were being posted...far better than mine.

Being lost can be fun, frightening and...bliss.

It really does feel warm Ann. Freckle-making warmth is a lovely phrase. I would have liked you to have described the smell of heat on skin and the sticky feel of sun cream more evocatively. I love all the seasons and this feels a long time away. Regards, Graham

Really love this Freda. It kind of reminds me of that song 'I learned the truth at 17, that love belongs to beauty queens...'.
Perhaps it is better to mature into beauty than start off with it. As your poem highlights, it is a long fall from the top of a mountain - much easier to cope with loss of beauty if you've never really had it as such. This is such a thoughtful poem - beautifully expressed.

You shouldn't have posted anything this close to the end of the month John - it only has a 2 day life span - then it gets lost!

I'm no expert on this form but love the play on the word lost - lost as in so happy you are beyond the everyday and lost as in deprived of the thing you want most.

I find the syllabic structure of some of the lines odd - but that is probably because I don't write to form any more - just write to flow of how I like reading something. I must study this structure and have a go myself. x

Cynthia
Thanks for your comments on Tale from the North Country. I can enjoy free verse, but for me the essence of poetry is rhythm. I find the management of syllabic stress the real challenge of writing verse.
I think this sort of advice on keeping warm ought to be made available on the BBC for pensioners through Public Service Announcements.

Hi Cynthia, thanks for your comments on Snow on the Pass. I've put some background to it on the poem's blog. You were exactly right to think that "bereavement without a funeral" meant "no closure". The "no music" line was just about an inability to listen to any kind of music in case it brought back painful memories. I found the idea of having to shut music out of your life really shocking. Greg
