I love this one Gareth. It is good to see bi-sexuality/homosexuality explored so subtly. As others have remarked, the poem has good flow and imagery.

Thanks Francine,
I was a but iffy about the title, will play with it, until it sits right :)

You must know my views on catharsis by now Anthony…
I do write the occasional autobiographically inspired piece – though my pride would stop me from going to the outer limits. I think women are more inclined to give vent to their emotions in this way and I don’t see it as a bad thing. Catharsis only gets a bad name when the needle gets stuck and we fail to look beyond ourselves. Our own blood and tears are but a drop in the ocean when you take a look around.

I really like the feeling and images this evokes, even though the last half is a bit of a downer. I personally would give it another title though...
'Abstract Notions'
Like the lines:
'Existence was not enough to tame us'
'We mix strife and strain with acid rain'

I love the title!
This flows along nicely, and like Cynthia, I find those last lines reflect well what you are saying.

OK, I'll 'fess up! If there wasn't that "little bit" of "us" in our writing it would all be much the same I suspect. That doesn't mean though that we write all our "characters" and scenarios from first-hand experience. Isn't that what imagination's for? ( although I wouldn't have minded being George Best for a while!)
" . . . a heart, a strong mind and a very sensitive soul."
I nearly fell off my "big chair"! Does The Pope know this- I should be in for Sainthood!
;)

Who was it who wrote that all writing is autobiographical, in that through our writing we reveal ourselves?

Well, I'll go to't foot of our stairs, I will. Michael has actually offered a comment, after years of his words being the raft on which all of ours float.
See what wonders your poetry can evoke, Ann?

Thanks for paying me a visit Anthony - what doesn't kill us certainly makes us stronger :) Am working hard on doing more performance/funny stuff - though I fear my latest may be too blue to post on WOL. Co-incidentally, it also bigs up Wigan - the best place to perform in the whole North West, from my experience. We don't take ourselves 'too' seriously up here, which makes for an entertaining evening. You will have to revisit your roots one day. xx

another beauty Rachael : ) sorry i'm late, been away and just trying to catch up. This reminds me of a story I used to read to my son when he was little about a mouse who collected colour during the summer and wove it into stories to tell to the other mice in winter to keep them going when all the food had run out. deb xx

You don't spare us much here, Ray. But lines such as "eyes drawn forth and back / to the oxygen tap, weighing the minutes,/ rehearsing the ritual of mouth to mask" reveal someone who has witnessed these pain-filled moments, kept vigil. "This sliver of inheritance, my slice of the takings" has a rueful edge to it; someone who can't quite be comforted by the knowledge that he has fulfilled his duty, kept faith and even shown love, by being there.

Steve. I posted it on PG a while back. Do you still go on there? I'm an infrequent visitor these days. I ought to stop completely, it's depressing.First glance I read "You should be punished" which is probably nearer the mark!

Thanks for commenting everyone, it's much appreciated, especially sorting out the spelling. The last couple of lines are deliberately enigmatic, and can be taken whichever way the reader wants. Some of the guesses about what was in my mind were close but how important is that?

Hi,
I am one of the two lead developers of WOL jointly leading a team of two (me and him). And in all my years I have never had a poem written about a bug, for this I thank you. In the five years of WOL I have never contributed to the content of the site but when someone cares enough to write a poem like this I feel move.

P.S. This box is too small I will make it bigger.

Hi Isobel,
Thanks for looking in on "alpha et omega", and, as always, for your comments - never drivel! As always it is in no way autobiographical; you should know by now that I seldom do that kind of stuff. You are right in that it's "generic"; hopefully anyway. Most, if not all, have been in "those" situations, and I wanted to write something universal. There was no conscious link between the first and second "couples", although I can see how it might seem that way. I'm pleased you found your own interpretation. I did try to shift the focus by using second-person he/she in alpha, and third person they in omega. Not sure if that worked.
I'm glad your compering stint went well; the challenges we set for ourselves make us stronger and more confident, and it looks like you were appreciated.
So, now you're "a performance poet living in Wigan" - don't sell yourself short! ;-)
Regards,
A.E.

To 'pull' the 'Lovers' card in a tarot reading is probably one of the most cruel twists of fate and destiny in any one lifetime's history. Choices to be made with devastating results and no guarantees.
I think the poem itself is exceptionally well written and can be interpreted in so many ways it is impossible to interpret without knowing what the questioner asked of the cards :-)

Hi Cynthia,
Enjoyed the brevity and concision (your hallmark) of this. I've been pondering over it a while - hence the delay in commenting. I think the final "still" is indispensible for its duality. Put me in mind of Lionel Ritchie's song in its use. The only line I might quibble with is:
- gods and angels -
as I feel it may be unnecessary. But hey, I know diddly-squat. Nonetheless, I did enjoy the ponder!

A.E.

I'm certainly not missing arguments. Civilised debate, enlightening discussions, educational repartee maybe - arguments - never. Can I start a campaign:
"SAVE THE WOL WOLVERINE!"
(Sorry to hog your poem Ann, very amusing and topical!)
Regards,
A.E.
Incidentally the wolverine is a member of the weasel family, so it would be "musteline" and not "vulpine."

I more-than-fancied her myself, but was already hitched anyway. Thinking afterwards, I was ashamed to say that I thought I'd love to jump her bones, but, would I want to be seen out with her ? No - and that's the shameful part and I would not normally think of myself as the shallow type, but I guess this showed my true colours ?

All right, all right, show's over, settle down at the back. the developers are working on the site and this is clearly causing some vulpine hiccups.
what you are seeing is the gubbins that makes the site work, the thought processes of software engineers, revealed to you for your entertainment and delectation and... and... by accident really.
