I could live with either version, Julie.
"I wish them health and happiness" is exactly the right response. We need these poems and these sentiments far more than the musings of yet another Royal pundit on the airwaves.

Harry and Meghan
Version 1 - Avoid and complain about the UK media
Version 2 - Embrace and complain to the US media
Meanwhile, HM carries on doing what she has always done, with
a husband in hospital to make life even harder. The Crown will
survive.- but will Harry's reputation?

The dewy eyed doe-like "pity me" look employed by Meghan reminded me of Diana when giving that interview to a certain
BBC reporter years ago. Odd how a couple that couldn't cope
with UK media publicity choose to use US media to provide their
version of what they apparently seemed intent on avoiding here.
The Crown is an institution that has survived worse than this - but
for it to have taken place when HM The Queen has so much to deal with at her great age represents a very low blow to The Firm and
will, I fear, haunt Prince Harry's reputation in the years to come. .

Sorry I missed this first time round Alexandra.
Your work is always complex but this piece seems very lucid and focussed. Memories can have many faces, some beautiful and others ghastly. Here you describe their force.
A strong piece, well written.

remembered fondly by old men like me
whose mothers always used to tell them
"don't have a Conniption Fit!"

Thanks to Nigel and A Girl for the comments. Tony Hancock, having been tricked by Sid James once again, asked:
"Sid, I might have guessed. Is there nothing you wouldn't do for money?"
"Nothing I can think of offhand," replied Sid.
I suppose that might have inspired this poem.
Many thanks to everyone for the likes.

TE - it was because he had the socialist tag that kept this memory
in my mind over so many years. It seemed so contrary to "the cause"
he supposedly represented. But such contradictions were not unknown - hence the term "champagne socialist" that was doing
the rounds. He certainly had more than his share of conceit that I recall!

Injustice exists in all its forms and "racial" is one of these. I take
some wisdom (and comfort) from the posts on YouTube involving
the black academic Thomas Sowell, not least his observations about
current "black culture" and his memories of growing up in Harlem
when (and where) weapon violence was not a factor in black lives.
