"Hammer" it home, Ian! A roller-coaster ride into horror,
revenge and dread. I'm uncomfortably reminded of that
US mass murderer who used clown performances at kids'
parties to achieve a respectable cover to lift him into the
"I would never have thought it" section of the unsuspected.

Almost stately in its formulation and progression - leaving
the reader to put his/her interpretation on the messenger.
P.S. Thanks for introducing me to a word previously unknown - penumbral. Now firmly lodged in my
brain!

Nice simple sentiment MC.
Every year I am at Worcester Cathedral cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday. I don't have any direct connections to the armed forces but it's my way of paying homage...to the unknown soldier if you like.
Some on WOL have been critical of those who do this. I can't think why. Would they rather that we just forget it?

An intriguing analogy with some human relationships! In
nature, this is not uncommon - with parasitic life-forms
using hosts to their profit.

It's also said that those born then are given "second sight"!
But at least we have the benefit of second opinions to
remind us of its real origins.

Didn't it originate in Celtic/pagan harvest festivals that were taken over by Christianity? The 'ghoulies and ghosties' are a hangover from those origins.
That aside, an enjoyable poem. ?

A picture very well painted. Beyond a festive poem Ian, this is a poetic tour into terror - not horror. You could feel the creeping intensity building up until not only did it not blow over, but it kept its build-up until the end.
You are the master of storytelling in rhyme. Have yet to read a musician or a writer reach that type accuracy on each line. Many writers (myself included) often resort to more abstract lines to fill in a poem once all the emotion has been verbalized and put down. It can cause 'leakage' in which the meaning is often overlooked by the inconsistencies of what fills the lines. You have no such problem my friend, keep kicking ass and taking names with all these pieces! ?

Hi Silviu
Yes, I liked this poem. Like the others I've read, it manages to be paradoxical and mysterious and surreal. It also forces you to think. Nice one, well done.

Hey Hugh you have gone and downgraded
Amelia's phone that she had
A brand new Epensive 6G one
For a common old 2G, so sad ?
No wonder the boys said I want that
Epensive ones cost a fortune
Could you please tell me where I can get one
Cos I'm wanting to upgrade mine soon ?

I gotta get my hands on
This new Epensive phone
It's one I've never heard of
A real cool new ring tone?
I'm sure it must be 6G
Or else it's out of date
Apple's gotta keep ahead
And not be running late
Epensive phone? I'm flummoxed
What colour it portrays?
Multicoloured? fleckle-toned?
Surely not shabby grey?
The name Epensive brings to mind
A phone in serious thought
I gotta go and get one
This phone, I gotta bought ?

I'm not a believer myself, but if I were I would have to have great faith in a holy ghost, holy spirit...call it what you will. How else could God be on every believer's shoulder whenever needed? It must be comforting.

your long-suffering husband,
beaten out by his own brother...

My reference work on phrases and fables makes NO mention of All Hallows Eve being anything to do with witches
and the rest so popular nowadays. It does mention the word as a derivative of that describing a holy man in the past, logical since All Saints Day follows on. There are
mentions of customs like bobbing for apples but NONE of
the current stuff. So, are we victim of some imported
additions that have no connection with out own calendar
date but provide useful commercial opportunities far in excess of mere fruit? Who can we blame? Let's do it soon!!

Data protection? But then I have a sneaking feeling that if I
were an employer, I would wish to choose those working for me...not have it done for me by legal process or its threat. I can see why "family" firms like to keep it in the family, to see their plans and intentions through and not
waylaid by the imposed participation of others whose
commitment and reasons for applying may not be what is
sought by those with most sacrificed and most to lose.

Neatly constructed with a nod to our human fallibility -
Followed with a blind devotion
That surrenders logic to emotion.
But it seems that (near or far) fate
Will see us meet the devil incarnate!

November is a month of Remembrance of which All Souls Day and Remembrance Sunday are particular solemnities. A fitting month I have always thought as the season is also indicative of death. A powerful indictment on our inability to create a better world out of such sadness and inequality.
Thank you for this
