I noticed 'eyelines like gunsight', 'camouflage', 'wild geese spear', and innocence dissolving, slipped in with Heaney-like cunning. I may well have been mistaken in the inference I made. Even if I was, it's a very fine poem.

This in some way recaptured my own youth in the East of England, beautiful skies, meadows and streams, with a similar musketeer band, thank you for my reminiscence made possible by your wonderful descriptions

A feeling of melancholy and the myriad of feelings that come from missing something important are well conveyed in this poetry.

John,
A truly remarkable poem which is a reflection on our earthly existence. I am able to relate to almost every line. Well scripted and thought provoking. Should we be sent back here for a second 'go' then I hope our previous experience will join us and guide us.
Thank you for this,
Keith

Ciaran,
You have the distinct ability to take the reader with you to the scene which is so well described. 'Feet squelching and skimming black stones' brought to my mind similar excursions with friends at weekends close to the River Avon.
Thank you for this,
Keith

Thank you Graham and MC. I stand with Ange on the frailties within and outside the club. I thought it was appalling to want to lose against Man City. I liken it to Scotland fans wanting England to lose against anyone. It’s a poor nationalism that defines itself in terms of its neighbour’s failure.

You couldn’t possibly understand MCN it’s a Spurs thing. John I look forward to standing shoulder to shoulder next to you watching the title decider in Betty’s tearooms next year with a lump in my throat and I don’t mean a piece of Parkin!!
PS my old next door neighbour used to go clubbing with those boys in Hatfield on Saturday nights!

Pity they couldn't hold Man. City to a draw and let Arsenal take
the title. Not impressed that Spurs fans were reported to back
Man. City in their game to prevent the Gunners from taking the. top spot. What happened to London pride?

Thank you, Graham. I think that the string quartet is the purest of musical combinations and I agree with you about the beauty of the cello, for instance in the slow movement of Elgar's concerto. So many great exponents of this instrument!
And my thanks to Nigel, Tom, Manish, Holden, Rob, Rose, Auracle, Hugh and Bethany for liking this.

M.C., you do have a point: Marilyn Monroe did have game, her psychological and substance abuse issues notwithstanding.
Diana Dors--England's own Marilyn Monroe--also had game in the 1950s. Popular on both sides of the Atlantic. As an actress and a model. Not bad for someone who was London Academy of Music & Dramatic Arts' youngest student AND a charm school graduate--

Welcome to WOL Ciaran,
a poem with a rich and personal vocabulary. I wonder how many readers know what an ' aspergillum' is? As an altar boy I remember when the old Latin Mass began with the asperges. Your poem also has a nostalgic quality as your recall your mother, a devout soul. My mother in law says one or two rosaries every morning before breakfast. A poem I throroughly enjoyed reading. Thank you for this,
Keith
