This sounds like a fun evening. The key thing is that the poetry is good and connects with people.

If any doubt existed about the self-obsession over public interest
that infests modern political life, then this example should
serve to focus the mind. These lines are a timely jolt.

David,
I remember having that realization that people walking down the street, or driving in their cars are living their own lives. They are the main characters in their own story.
I agree with you on just about everything you said. (Especially the watching a documentary just once). Thank you for the like, and comment. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I really appreciate it

A thoughtful questioning poem Evan.
If we all shared this disposition the world might be a little better.
The realisation and understanding that there are lives outside of our own which we would do well to consider more often is a useful tool.
As a species we have never been better informed of the lives of others yet we seem less and less concerned with anything but our own.
Of course I hope I'm wrong and this can all be simply explained away by social media and the quip that everything was ever thus...it's the 24/7 news cycle that makes us feel different...and other such shallow imaginings by people who learned every single thing they profess to know from a book someone else wrote, or worse a TV documentary they watched once....just once.
Great poem..
David

"people that will come home one day,
but for now the gate swings,
and we bark at the birds in the garden".
"ive heard his footsteps in my dreams before,
in my slumbering world he recognised me,".
I've read this piece several times looking at it several different ways. The above are truly exceptional words and are to be congratulated.

A poignantly beautiful piece of writing that moved me.
"I had known you once back when you were whole
Back before your life became more than you could bare," so aching and evocative. "I’ve stared into the windows to your soul," is such a great line to begin with, Tim.
Thank you.

Graham - I see how the passing of time and the advance of age in a war affects the Ukrainians I know in the local area. The children start to grow up, having known nothing else, while the adults stagnate in a realm of uncertainty, not sure whether to return or stay put, or for how long. And this is just for refugees living in the West; in Ukraine the same effects are multiplied by the ever-present danger and horror.
Greg - it's a good joke, I think. Eurovision may be tacky but at least it's innocent, unlike, well, it's going to be a long list!
MC - Thanks for your verse. I'm sure the word 'elected' is heavily tongue-in-cheek!
And thanks to Nigel, Tom, Hugh, Stephen A, Holden, Steve, Hélène, Aisha, Manish and Rob for liking this.

This notable Lerner/Loewe song was made famous by Maurice Chevalier...L'homme Francais personnified. I especially enjoyed
his other solo song from "Gigi" - "I'm Glad I'm Not Young Anymore". So apt for this age we live in now.

I have been minded to consider age for a variety of personal reasons lately and your piece here clearly slates the real reality realism of this nasty war. It seems our world no longer thinks age is precious anymore. Dystopian indeed.

Thank you for your comments gents,
this is an amalgam of events and thoughts. I can't escape that I feel in a constant state of numb shock and disbelief, occasionally an overwhelming sense of grief and waste. In the most intense moments I see this vision of stillness and calm and maybe nothingness.
I don't know what it is but understand that it isn't normal, what's normal? this is my normal.
I am still an atheist who steals from anything that helps me get by...refusing to succumb to irrationality or simple succour.
I would not wish a military funeral for myself, nor is this image of a traditional military funeral except for the non-defined flag...I can see how it might be imagined as such and have no issues with that.
It's interesting that you speak of detachment Ray, it is a mixture of emotions...in this moment I am connected to the ceremony and the passing of a life whilst being completely disconnected from everything else...I am almost inside the coffin with the subject.
I am very grateful for your comments and observations which are of help in understanding some of my own strange emotions and remoteness.
David
