A Penny For...

My thoughts

about all they are worth

they do not necessarily

follow each other

sometimes they go off

on tangents

sometimes they get out

on a slip of tongue

some leave for good

those thoughts escape me

where do

those thoughts go

there must be a place

where you collect your thoughts

if you could find it

think how sm...

Black Friday

The world's fattest newspaper came today

20 lbs. of ads for Black Friday sales

Black Friday sounds so sinister and dark

you'd think they'd call it something more positive

but I guess you can't say White Friday

you would be branded a racist

anyway 20 lbs. of ads is a lot of paper

it took a wagon and two neighbor kids

to get it off the driveway and through the door

when I ...

What I Am Thankful For

For my family

(gathered around the table)

for my lovely wife

(who spent hours in the kitchen)

for our good health

(physically & Mentally)

for a home

(when so many are homeless)

for e-mail

(so I can write these poems)

for my mom & dad

(who I think of often)

for my old age

(whoever thought I would achieve it)

for the government

(so I can cuss it)

Apps & Mishaps

Ubiquitous

are these cell phones

folks can't seem to leave

the things alone

every kid has to have one

of their own

consequently dumbness

has in proportion grown.

Interpretive Center

I have come to the conclusion that

these poems need an Interpretive Center

much like a state park

where visitors would be

given glimpses of poems under glass

with their history and their use

maybe even a video

in the adjoining theater

to show how the poems were formed

and how they came to be

an actual poet could be observed

in a diorama

his h...

Gremlins

Little Gremlins

live within

our computer's heart

and make things grim

They foul up parts

to our chagrin

the system's down

so we give in

Why waste our time

in failed pursuit

the shutdown is

so absolute

There's nothing we

can substitute

we wish we could

but can't compute.

Sticking My Neck Out

My neck started hurting this week

there was a knot there

that hurt like crazy

I could hardly move or turn my head

without excessive pain

my darling wife took over

said here take this

I said what is it

a pain reliever she said

it will probably work in about 8 hours

if not

there's always the final solution

what's that I asked innocently

Looking Back

Raised on a farm

always working

always poor

but always wanting

better things

always wishing for escape

from the drudgery

the sameness

yet when they finally got away

and saw what life was like in the city

then suddenly the farm

looked so much better

as memory dimmed

those days recalled were bittersweet

as they remembered

all the family did together

Homeless Piano

The homeless piano

sits by the curb

the sign on it says FREE

but no one takes

the offer up

and so the piano

sits and sits

until finally

the bulk truck

comes along and hauls it off

like so much trash

the thought of the piano

being hauled away to the landfill

seems so insulting

a thing of beauty

reduced to only wood and wire

eventua...

You Left Before I Could Say Goodbye

You left before

I could say goodbye

and now my goodbye

hangs like a dark cloud

above my head

a goodbye

that was intended

but never said

a goodbye that was full of

sadness and regret

the goodbye

now just empty words

that appear in the speech balloon

above my head

never to be spoken aloud

words that you will never hear

the bubble burst and

I Caint Hear Too Good

I caint hear too good

anymore

old age means

losing your senses

one by one

people say things

I just dont get or understand

i see their lips move

but i only catch a word

here and there

people may think i hear them

because i smile

and nod

if it's a joke

i laugh along with the rest

though i never got the joke

i don't wanna look foolish

Behold The Whale

Pulled aboard

by rope and net

this creature from

the deepest depths

the killers wrong

to stop its song

behold the whale

before its gone

Leviathan

it is described

yet its gentleness

can't be denied

in grip of net

it sadly flails

pity its plight

behold the whale

are killed or maimed

we question why

Swishing Skirts

Remember when

women actually wore skirts

and looked

dare I say

Feminine

women went to great length

to look beautiful and appealing

then mini skirts came in

and the war started

soon skirts disappeared entirely

and women began wearing pants

as a protest

against who they were

now there are no more

swishing skirts

with their air ...

Leave Well Enough Alone

How many times

have we gotten that message

that such & such is changing

and the old format will be gone

just when we have gotten used

to something

and know how to maneuver through it

they change it

but it is really not an improvement

it's just a different way

of doing the same thing

it only gives someone

an excuse for a job

or a reaso...

Fan Club

Between you and me

I have a fan club

just one member

my wife

she thinks everything I write

is brilliant

and butters me up with compliments

it is so nice

to have someone appreciate

my art

it is not easy being a poet

thinking is hard work

my mind is weak

Attachment

You should have been able

to open that attachment

but since you couldn't

I suggest you detach yourself

as I have

from all reality

or attach yourself to

someone unattached

you don't want to fool around

with someone already attached

I will attach another attachment

Getting Ahead Of Yourself

Do not get

ahead of yourself

stay back in the past

where it is more comfortable

you can always go forward

if you want

but the past

is easier to dwell on

it dims in memory

and the story changes

with time

I am confused by the current

find satisfaction in

what was

it is safer there

in the dark

and no one asks

Dear Valued Customer

Dear Valued Customer,

Our records indicate that you recently contacted us on 11/11/2019. We would greatly appreciate your feedback, even though we probably will never read it.

We just don't have the time like we used to. Cell phones and video games now take up

most of our time.  We did not go to college for nothing.

We used to be committed to world class service, but not anym...

Laughter 'Round The Table

Laughter

'round the table

means companionship

assumed

a spread of joy

and happiness

for all who

would consume

laughter is

the remedy

for those

in grip of gloom

appetites are

always eager for

more laughter

in a room

like in a cake

or in a steak

so great its taste

and soon

as laughter

rounds the table

Refrigerator Magnet

I am a refrigerator magnet

stuck on writing

on the side of words

humming like a refrigerator

a magnet stuck so solidly

you cannot pull me away

I am drawn to the power of poems

and will not drop off unexpectedly

I cling to something

larger than myself

the pull of poetry

clipped to my sides

it holds me close

a magnetic force

as huge as

a refrigerator...

Through 7 Year Old Eyes

She sees her father

through 7 year old eyes

she was only that old

when he was taken

a young man

only 44

who had his whole future

before him

a gentle soul who loved

his family of 4

who worked hard

and lived an exemplary life

he was so kind

he was one of a kind

how does one remember

a dad who went too soon

his memory hard to recall

when so youn...

ANGER

How anger comes we do not know

yet once inside it seems to grow

and somehow we, though unaware

assume its grip of dark despair

Not knowing how it all began

we try to let it out again

and send it meanly, right or wrong

to those we chance to come upon

Those innocents, who on that day

accidentally got in our way

becoming targets of our wrath

who bl...

Old As Rock

I am so old

rocks

look up to me

awed

that something is

older

I am a boulder

set in my ways

I will not move

I am rounded

worn down

by years

embedded

in my own

opinion

I am not

a rolling stone

I am petrified.

Every Post Has A Gull

On the coast

every pole or post

requires a gull

wise guy sentries

waiting for a handout

they sleep with one eye open

waiting for a fish to come along

but better yet

waiting for a tourist

to throw some bread up into the sky

the gull catching it

in mid-air

with instantaneous moves

up and down and sideways

proving the gull's ability to catch

whatever ...

Our Daily Bread

Bread on the table

was the culmination

of a day of hard work

a long involved process

taking hours and hours

the making of homemade bread

mothers learned it from their mothers

who learned it from their mothers

the recipe and the tradition passed down

one generation to the next

families bound together by daily bread

the staff of life

bread was that...

Do Not Die In The Fall

Whatever you do

do not die in the Fall

It is Football Season

and if you are buried

on Saturday or Sunday

no one will come to your funeral

because there's an important game on

and pizza on the way

it's best to die in the Spring

when there is not much going on

then people will come to your funeral

to talk and laugh with relatives

and eat the free food at the...

Widows

Women are constantly thinking

of things their husbands

need to do

and so this stimulation

fires the brain cells

and keeps their minds active

and engaged

thus they do not age

as quickly as men

it is only when the man dies off

that women change

and become depressed

since they are left with no one

to tell what to do

the only way they can keep

Bald Heads

Bald heads reflect

the bright sunlight

and when they shine

how laughs ignite

in ridicule

how folks delight

when baldness brings

receding blight

one can't defend

it is men's plight

why men and babies

cry at night

such rounded domes

almost egg-like

like bowling balls

minus a strike.
