This is pretty much my own relationship, how it developed. I can't help but love this poem. So gentle and beautiful. You have a real raw talent at capturing and expressing these feelings - comes no doubt from your peaceful and equal inner soul.

A cracker this. I wrote something similar myself a few years ago. Funny innit? It's over before it's begun, and you think - did I do it all??

I was wondering what the title reminded me of and Stu's comment prompted the memory of Sham 69's Hurry Up Harry and the chorus line of 'We're going down the pub' although your female narrator doesn't sound like an old punk to me.
In fact I'm not sure what she sounds like - part Polish, part Welsh, part Asian, part Royal? I bet they drive a Chelsea tractor though with spray-on mud for the return journey back to town. Great stuff. The opposite to the Slugshaws perhaps? Col.

i like the interplay of 'fear of heights' and 'some in high places'. i tend to stay away from anything political or to do with current events, just a personal preference, but i do like this and it does seem to keep its emotions in sway, so as to not appear overly 'reactionary'. good stuff and surely indicative of its quality that it will be performed at fundraisers.

Hi Harry.
Thanks for your comment on my blog.
I love your bio! What an interesting life you've lived. I confess to being a little envious (okay, a lot) that you read on a bill with Roger McGough. He's my favourite poet.
To counter my lack of distinction in that area, I can tell you that I had a one-act play make its debut at The Everyman in the eighties. Yes, it was a student piece, performed by students, and appeared for one night only; but no one can take that away from me ?
Going to check out your poetry now x

What I really like about this poem is the way it avoids ranting and railing, but just quietly and cleverly makes its point by reminding the reader that following advice could lead any of us into an impossible position. Nice work.
It's worth taking heed of the adage "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all'. Maybe the heat has made some people forget that.

And you speak of dishonouring. The irony.

This is a 'leave' comment:
This piece of doggerel is quite the worst I've read in many a month - it fails to meet even the low entry requirement for doggerel.
Frankly it is drivel and, I feel, dishonouring to the deceased.
I think there's nowt to be gained by sticking around.
So, with thanks to the kind people I've met here, for their encouragements, this is my 'adieu'.
Cheers everyone
Rick.

All out blazing enthusiasm of youth - what's not to love. Really delightful the last two lines, in the innocence of 'talking to the sun'. And it's roughly structured, just like a kid's erratic thoughts. Much enjoyed.

To the Lancashire County Palatine Tourist Bard. Thank you for your comment. To respond to your staement one would probably need to take each politician on his or her own merits. I do not accept that all started out as philanthropists as there are far too many opportunists and self seekers to name. It is a profession which attracts many who thirst for personal acclaim and can find no other way of achieving this. More importantly those who clamour for such office are not required to possess any qualifications yet feel that they have some inherit right to determine the nation´s future. It is an interesting subject, which I am sure, will be an ongoing debate for many years to come. Thank you again for your comment. Keith

This is such a telling poem Karen. I love these lines
and words taken hostage
crammed into cages
are testing their teeth
on ragged promises
until swollen with anger
I think they are the most telling of all particularly with politician's sound bites.
As David says great stuff as ever

Great imagery here Tom. Where I lived as a lad there weren't many hills to go up, but none the less there was a sense of freedom going out cycling at a young age even if I only had three gears not like now when I have twenty two!

I really like these three lines Louise because they stand out as perhaps illusory when followed so swiftly by 'And face the preachers scorn' -
I want to taste the rainbow,
To ride a unicorn,
To talk to Jesus freely.
all the best

Thanks Martin. I think the horrors were very real for me as I had lived on the top floor of a smaller block (12th floor).
Karen I will definitely get it recorded, but if any in London want to hear the piece I will be performing it first at two events to raise funds in support of victims... One at the Rutland Arms in Hammersmith on the 4th of July (featuring alongside Anthony Anaxagorou, Kat François, Joelle Taylor And Deanna Rodger!), the other my own night Lipped Ink where I host and the featured poet is Sophia Walker.

I recall intervening in the abuse of an Asian bus conductor
by three Afro-Caribbean youths and finding myself
accused of being racist by the small ethnic crowd that had
gathered to pass judgement according to their ill-informed
prejudices instead of preserving the peace. That's one
type of behaviour that has barely changed in my adult lifetime.

Grand! Brings back memories of my mid-teen fights with
Bowden Hill above the Wiltshire village of Lacock, vowing
not to dismount from my Raleigh Lenton Sports until I'd
reached home a couple of turns beyond the church on its
crest. No pub there!! But the challenge was the thing
when you're fourteen and fit for anything.
The days come back with every remembered turn of the
toe-clipped platform pedals I had fitted to the Williams
chainset driving a Cyclo Benelux derailleur. Yorkie Brian Robinson was leading the UK Cinderella charge in Continental
cycle racing - and I still see his name in magazine articles six decades later! What a hero...then and now.
