Hi, John..I listened to the song--a few times over, in fact. And, I couldn't help but explore the story of the songwriter. I hope that any who read this comment will do the same--it's a beautiful and poignant song. I thank you kindly John, for sharing with me, and thus, the rest.
Rachel
ps
watching Jansch in his early days reminds me much of Jose Gonzalez..
Thanks again, John!

I've admired your poems from the sidelines for ages and you have encouraged me so very much. Thank you. I thought a lot about what you said. This is a present from me to thee. From a northern man to an Appalachian poet. My favourite singer, Bert Jansch's take on Jackson C Frank's 'Blues Run the Game'. '. Hope you like it.

You're welcome - and welcome to WOL too, I hope you'll enjoy it here.
We all like to play with line breaks don't we? But what we should be aiming for is extra meaning, more significance, added ambiguity, rather than 'why's it ended like that?'.
Anyways, have a great weekend ?

Alem, This poem fascinates and intrigues me as you focus on an aristocrat. Along with What a Farce, Unmatched Grace and Heroines in the Dark I enjoy your work enormously. I am reminded of being at dinner in the Sultanate of Oman 35 or 40 years ago and met an Ethiopian lady of great charm and intellect. I think she was married to a British Army Officer. She exuded sophistication and could be compared with the lady in A Black Empress´Legacy. Thank you. Keith

Hey there Colin and Laura!
Thank you for the comments, I really appreciate it! I will admit this poem was a bit more on the spot then my usual stuff. I tend to write with a metaphor or concept in mind, but this came out in one long thought, so I can totally understand how some of the metaphors are hard to understand.
As for the line breaks, I like very broken lines that leave words by themselves to play with pacing, but I definitely could have put more thought into where they break.
Thank you for the critique!

love this. strong, confident writing that takes me from gigers biomechanoids (the first lines are reminiscent of the unfurling of the xenomorphs in the original alien films to me, as is the way you compare it to reptilian movement), through innocence, strength, self-belief and wisdom. very good.

Ha. I liked your reading of it actually - that's the first time I've heard your voice. Loving the contempt dripping off those upward inflections (god I hate them!).
A neat poke in the eye for contemporary culture this Ray.

Some cracking lines in here
where cars run rare
and exude mating calls
through means
of
rap.
Across from
the
funeral home
with running rust
that
synonymous to melting
Lots of ideas in here. Would you consider tidying up the line lengths? Bringing the shorter ones maybe into each other? They don't always make much sense being cut where they are.

Oh I love this. I love that it doesn't just slip into the usual physicality, that it stays on the cerebral and emotional level. And I couldn't agree more with the sentiment.

Wow, thanks so much all ?
Cynth - she's a poet, quite well known for her 52 prompts idea. I came across her as I was doing a half-arsed attempt at NaPoWriMo, and found this, which I've used to spark off quite a few poems. I don't always (never) stick to the actual prompts themselves, but they're really useful as springboards. Check these out:

That WAS a bit weird Colin! I thought the funeral was gobsmacking too.
Aww, thank you so much Stu. And aye, heh - we were all a bit 'wtf' when this kinda crashed into our night/day too! Great way to express that ?

i'm a busy little bee but i had to drop (buzz?) by and let you know how fucking amazing this is.
pixellated puckered tin
bathed bodies in the flicker
i mean. really. thats some hot shit.
not the same occasion but i was still split off my tits when the wtc came down and i remember it being a transformative moment, as if the real world was clawing into the fantasy i had created, kind of like rubbing away the paint of an abstract piece of art to find a realist landscape underneath. fab fab fab and you are also fab.

Hi Ray,
I read the poem as also being about thinking outside of rigid expectations and norms; thinking for oneself, and refusing to be thrown into the collective limbic system psyche of fear and war - and hate..
This also could be about imagination, and allowing it to run free> "Sometimes a curve is all we seek.."
A curve here could mean Hope too. I'm not sure if that was your intention? Anyway I really love this poem. Thanks for sharing.

Classic Raj poetry. There is a corner of WoL that only your words can fill.
As a cheeky afterthought I wondered if Ray's recently posted 'Romeo and Juliet In Real Time' could be appended to this?

it's really great that more contributors are adding audio versions of their poems here on WoL but I have to admit I don't always listen - preferring instead to read through first and find a voice in my own head before deciding whether or not to hit the play button. With this one the voice I found was completely different to yours Ray. This is not negative feedback - just an observation if that's okay.
Cheers
Col

I like the idea behind this although a few of the lines leave me guessing at their meaning. I also like the idea of the students creating new meaning to that part of town - it's a fair enough summation of all things arty in a world where each generation has to find its own point of reference. Thanks for posting Connor.
Col.

Beautiful Mia. Couldn't have started my day in a better way.
There are many things I like about this piece, especially the central theme which strings everything together very nicely indeed.
3 parts I particularly like:
"I can still feel the love in our captured memories,
hear the leaves rustle with a deafening reminder"
"...unharmed by the agonizing cut from
life's long blade of time. "
and then the wonderful finale:
"but maybe," a small voice chillingly whispers,
"just maybe, the blame is yours to claim."
More please.
Raj

Marianne I have only just read your profile with keen interest.
First of all if you have the craving to write -- just write. Let your voice be heard, irrespective of people's response to it.
Never let another person's judgement of your work affect you. Having said that WOL is a wonderful site with established poets who are both supportive and encouraging. So you're in good company.
You seem to have an inquiring, restless mind and that's a good thing. So bring it all out.
May I also humbly add that with every poem you need to have a "big idea' and then express them through engaging words.
C'mon let have the first one!
Raj

Welcome to WOL. I very much like your free ideas. And look forward to more. Do keep writing.
But, before actually posting, do a quick spell-check to weed out simple errors that may be only from the keyboard fingering. Posting makes a poem a 'written' or 'page poem' and presentation does count.

I've not been too active on line lately. IMO, 'Momentary Musings' is really splendid. I think you have a fresh but sophisticated voice, and a fine command of language. It's wonderful to read works where ideas are strong and sharing them seems to be both a real desire and a labour of love.
I find poetry as 'emotional dumping' very hard to read sympathetically. But I'm just me. Lots of people really like it, like voyeurism.
