Hello John, Thank you for this poem as it proves my belief that behind every poet there is a philosopher. The verse and style of writing are all beautifully crafted. Thanks. Keith

gosh aren't we all full of the old nostalgia here on WoL these days. I do wonder though whether the women of the house actually enjoyed preparing all of those Sunday roasts that the men took for granted - and the washing up after as the men sat snoozing in front of the tele. There was never much complaining but then again it was expected. Nothing like a day off. Still, the aroma of that lamb (with homemade mint sauce of course) smells awfully nice. What's for pud Paul?

I was never 'lucky' enough to be invited behind the bike sheds but often thought that less actually happened there than was claimed. Perhaps today in some schools, if they have bike sheds, more nefarious crimes are planned or drugs exchanged. Thanks for posting Keith.

It is so kind of all of you to share in my pleasure with such supportive comments. Just before I started posting here on WoL, there was a long period where I stopped writing completely. I never thought that I could ever reattain the contentment it had once brought me--but I was wrong. And, the thing with blogging here is that I get the chance to get out of my own head for a bit with glimpses into yours by reading what you each share--I love that!

So, thanks for all of your continued encouragement, Karen, Colin, Paul, Stu, Martin, and David (I love it when you say my name)--it really means a lot to me.

excellent choice. stirringly beautiful, sensual and not a breath wasted. colins right, i'd show no surprise at any of your work being chosen, so uniformly excellent are they. but these pieces where you come down to earth and focus in on what it is to be human, as opposed to the grander questions you ask with the majority of your work, work so well because each word aches and haunts.

good show, basically.

excellent - love it Juan - especially this rhyme:

I'm tired and cranky
and frankly

and thanks for introducing me to Snorlax. After Googling him/her/it I found this description (in case anyone is wondering):

"Snorlax's typical day consists of nothing more than eating and sleeping. It is such a docile Pokémon that there are children who use its expansive belly as a place to play."

but beware part 2 - sequels often do not match up to the original ?

All the best
Colin

My student days were spent watching from the sidelines the girls dancing round their handbags. I'd just about built up enough courage by the the "La la la la la la la las" half-way through "Het Jude" (last dance of the night) to ask one to dance. Memories.

Martin, I can't believe you mentioned Sherry's in Brighton. Must've spent half my life in there early 80's before it went all yucky Pink Coconutty. I was very much part of the post punk new romantic scene - they did a couple of excellent alternative music nights there each week. The laser light show was incredible. What a place. I always felt the Top Rank over the road was more Saturday Night Fever. That's where my brother used to go.

We'd drink in the Electric Grape beforehand - it was near the original Virgin shop bottom of Queens Road. I never got to DJ in Sherrys but I did the Grape for a while and some other smaller venues around town. Oh you've really stirred up some good memories Martin!

cheers

Thanks Colin, David, Ray and Neil
I guess it does have a touch of Saturday night fever about it. I was recalling a place called sherry's in Brighton which I think later became the pink coconut. Don't know if you ever saw it Colin
I think it has been an all too familiar scenario for a lot of people David. I doubt much has changed since the seventies.
I forgotten about Hai Karate and medallions. I know what you mean about being shy Ray.
Thanks Neil I am glad you like it. The drinks were usually pretty disgusting and watered down in those days in some of the large hostelries and clubs or disco's as they were then known
Thanks again everybody for reading

This is a poem to savour over again. I love the first stanza which has that line
'it's not what they think' there is too much superficial judgement and we all do it. I also like the way it grows in an intensity that goes beyond the obvious.
