Hi Isobel. Thanks for your comment. I'd never read The Highwayman so I looked it up. It's amazing, certainly there's a surprisingly similar theme but I'm enormously flattered you'd make any comparisons between the writing in Noyes work and my own effort. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I feel I should get the hang of traditional structures before I would be confident to try something more contemparary, maybe it's a bit of a security blanket!

Hey Banksy I had you figured for Asia and far east culture not Utah lol There is more culture in my fridge than in that entire state Haha.
Hi Isobel, I remember your poem about returning from Australia. The grass is always greener isn't always a true saying is it? I mean being somewhere, that not being home...that can greatly re-enforce everything that is good and wanted about 'home'.
Wigan looks like it hits all the right buttons. I tell you what though, I wouldn't be too keen on having a funeral parlour near me Hehe The rest yea :)

Ha - you know me too well! I wasn't saying ridiculous - it's just that experimental poetry of that type isn't my bag. Poetry has to move me, make me think, make me laugh. If it doesn't do that then it's missed the mark. Luckily, I am just one opinion and there a million out there who differ. So will you be building a nasty pile of bricks on the canal bank, any time soon?

This reminds me a lot of the The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes - the same romantic feel to it and strict metre. It is good to see traditional poetry on here as well as all the contemporary.

Hi Isobel, comtemporary... is that one way of saying ridiculous? lol. These match report experiments are becoming a regular thing. I find it interesting how they evolve a life of their own and create their own meaning. Win x

Hi Greg, Interesting isn't it how, when you know the source material it makes you see different things. And if you then relate to that material in one way or another then you see yet more. Frankly I hope chelsea make things interesting at the top this year. Thanks for your comments. Win

Really liked this andy, especially the idea of nature using chemical warfare on humans, if the earth could think maybe it would, it does its best with natural disasters. Good poem.

I think it's the photo that's made it ok. My mum in the distance, then me, then of course dad taking the photo. We can identify with that I think. And we never grow up do we? The view is the same - only we have moved on. But maybe we are always the same. I just felt that I found myself again in St Ives last week. Thanks for the comments. xx

Barefoot Self... I thought I had to tell you that like Coromandel & Visiting Neil by Anthony Emmerson, (and some others) this poem goes beyond the realms of good/really good and for me attains something else close to perfection. I also don't know whether you know yourself what you've got here, but for me it's a masterpiece like Coromandel. It's not just great it's fabulous because you've gone beyond cleverness & wit & beauty & have successfully encapsulated emotions & your words are able to re-awaken those emotions, which I think is very rare. Being blunt (& serious for once) - tell me yourself - do you realise yourself just how good this is ? I'm genuinely interested. XX B

it's hard to put into words the actual emotions that this poem (and photo) evokes, not least because there are quite a few - a lovely moving poem - you've got a way with words (for an old witch-bat) :)

Isobel, once I said to a very clever friend, "I take 'umption' with your attitude." The word wasn't past my teeth, when I tried to drag it back, and failed. And he hollered with joy: 'MALAPROPISM - HAHAHAHA!' and then he laughed for ten years at least. Ah, well, we're still good friends.

There's a Virgin Street, a Teetotal Street and even a Love Lane. There must be a poem in there somewhere. Maybe I saw you there Neil - did you ever buy a Troika pot? I think the Troika Pottery was at a place called Wheal Dream! The museum is there now.

I spent many happy weeks in St. Ives as a child in the late '60's early '70's and remember my fascination with the beatniks. This poem has brought back names long forgotten 'Barnoon.. Salubrious Place'. I must return and see if that little boy is still running about!

Maybe just lose the second and fourth line of verse four? Like "pocket money spent" and the "ceramic pendant". If you were thinking about reshuffling at all, I'd maybe start with the current second verse. Those first two lines - "A little girl, I saw the beatniks on the pier /
was mesmerised, left something there" – absolutely hook you. Lovely poem already.

I was in St Ives for the last week of this two week event and - next year I'll either be there EVERY day or else - well, I'm moving to St Ives! It was a really good festival, lots of other things on too - talks, films, gigs, workshops, open studios, even a ceramic pot firing session on the beach that went on all night. But, back to the square. Bob Deveraux leads these daily events and it's 50/50 musicians and poets and sometimes both at once. And it is totally joyous! I even had a go at singing - first time in public - not sure if that was joyous - well, I enjoyed it! So thanks to all those lovely talented people who took part, and the lovely audiences that we had. It was perfect!

Bit of a rough draft written on the beach last week. The St Ives Festival was fab, had a great time! And, yes, that's me in the photo on a previous visit - with mum in the background.
Maybe I should ditch verse four? Too much info praps!

Mmmm - like the thought in this one too. Having lived in the middle of nowhere, I'd hate to repeat the mistake. There's no beating living amongst people in a community. I now live walking distance to a pub, a co-op, cashpoint, chippie, hairdresser, bank, estate agent, school (secondary, primary and college) post office, train station, water park, private tennis courts, chinese, indian, two sisters and a funeral parlour!!! And I just love it - Utopia is where the heart is. x

U-oh - Mrs Malaprop strikes again. You are quite right Graham - Diana Geneen happens to be Pensions Manager for United Biscuits down in Southall.... I think I have worked with her somewhere along the line! My claim to fame is that I think I once worked out the pension benefits for Moran's husband - at least I think I did - I suppose it could have been somebody else...
