Exactamundo T.W. how we use the tools of life and what we make with them eh what? a tasty poetic morsel indeed.

Depiction of others from relationships have long featured in the
arts. I'm reminded of the song "You're So Vain" for example.....
rumoured to have been written about the younger Warren Beatty.
Then, there are faces and bodies featured in various artwork
down the centuries. The stories behind many must provide
fascinating insights into their creation.

Take comfort in what you knew. My own father died when I was
barely old enough to recognise him, leaving my mother a forty-something widow, with me the youngest of six children.

It is a reality that each one of us seeks what will help make us
feel better about ourselves. For some it is other people; for
others, the exact opposite - and perhaps for the majority...a
happy in-between scenario. It is also a sad reality that "needy"
can cause resentment against too much "expectation". Who
said life was easy? 😕.

Just seen your comment, Stephen. Thankyou. They probably did; it could be a rowdy plaice. I’m labouring on my phone trying to post this and only just got the poem added.
And thanks for the Like, Holden and Frederick.

I think this one of your best, John.
'I emerged, purged' - wonderful. And the Larkinesque allusion 'coastal shelf.'
As a regulation C of E child, my only experience of confession was watching Dave Allen - not a bad introduction!

Tom,
your poetry grows more profound by the day as you probe into the minds of others and even your own. This poem is deep and the third stanza is an example of of that profundity.
Thank you for this

Thanks Stephen, I'm pleased you appreciated this one. I was thinking about the singers of the 60s many of whom were involved with oneanother but must have known their relationships were going to be fodder for future songs - that they may or may not like. It got me thinking about the tightrope you walk when dating a writer or artist; someone who is likely to mine every heartbreak for inspiration. And then, in the process of writing, the story always gets conflated, embellished, and tuned.
The resulting song/book/artwork lays bare the relationship while also presenting a distorted view of what transpired. I suppose I feel some guilt for writing about my past relationships without the consent of the people involved. So, in this poem, the person on the receiving end gets to have their say.
The world would be a very boring place without the art borne out of the relationships between two people (I place I personally love to explore) but the idea of consent or what it's right or wrong to expose is something that got me thinking. Personally, I’d feel honoured to have inspired anyone to have created anything. Even a gleaming grotesque bust 😂
Thank you also to Nigel, K Lynn, Stephen and Holden for taking the time to pour your eyes over my lines.

Thank you Ruth. This is the poem, written by Chris, that I read at Chris' funeral:
Lemon Light
sad december skies haunt my thoughts as I drive
skirting south of the stage set of my younger days:
my home town, seldom visited now. lemon light
can’t warm the chill around my heart,
the chill of a life unlived, or lived awry, and in greater part
treasured only in hopeless hindsight.
the motorway speeds me away, in flight into deepest cheshire:
the light is cream soda in clouds,
the scenes so familiar and utterly alien
at both ends of my journey.

Thank you, Clare, for the comments on my poems. This is for you:
MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
“When you .set sail for Ithaca, wish for the road to be long, full of adventures, full of knowledge.” CP Cavafy
Curlews cry, an Aegean sky: a boat
lifts and falls. The heat of noon, a lethargic
gloom, she's tracked with light this star-struck night.
Moon-shadows cast, it's cool at last, this sweep
and swell, this road to hell. This ship's becalmed
with false alarms, this attic night of bone-white light:
no palimpsest, no Grecian zest.
A sapphic wind balloons the moon, fans the fog's
penumbra, spreads this shadowy gloom. The ship's horn
sounds, these hung penumbras,
this
scattered light.
This haven isle, this Sapphic home,
these cliffs, these stories, this all alone; this fog-horn
fright, these brittle bones, this scattered light,
this all alone.

Very nicely put together, I will send you poetry, you can rely on that. Remember not to avoid what poetry is:
"Poetry is the journal of the sea animal living on land, wanting to fly in the air. Poetry is a search for syllables to shoot at the barriers of the unknown and the unknowable. Poetry is a phantom script telling how rainbows are made and why they go away."
- CARL SANDBURG. 'THE ATLANTIC' 1927

Thank you for this Ruth. Un-obviously a dedication to a few more motes in the eye of those who seek validation. Do it anyway is a more satisfying credo, I reckon.
"The artist, like the God of the creation, remains within or behind or beyond or above his handiwork, invisible, refined out of existence, indifferent, paring his fingernails." James Joyce
