NIGHT AND DAY!
I'm rarely in bed before three
And except for a well-watered wee
I'm in bed until noon
And noon is too soon
For the likes of retired old me!
Occasionally, I lie there and scheme,
Dozing off - when there might come a gleam
Of unexpected inspiration;
Result: the creation
Of stuff that is based in some dream.
I can wake with a tune in my head

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS - a nod!
Tis the night before Christmas
And here in this house
Not a soul 'cept me stirs
Or maybe the mouse
Who sometimes flits by in furred subterfuge
So tight with his visits that I call him Scrooge!
The flat below has been empty a while
And the tenant above has gone away with a smile.
I'm in solitary seclusion - but far from alone,
With the email, the landline and mobile phone...

It prefers instead international orders

CHRISTMAS IN MIND
The following lines are adapted from a seasonal song lyric of mine. Be of good cheer and be happy!
Lift up your voice
Let all rejoice
And make a joyful sound
Cast off the care
Most folk must bear
When Christmas comes around.
A time of cheer
With loved ones near
To banish grief and tears
With peals of laughter
Ever after
Echoing down the years.

CHRISTMAS SNOW - a song for the Season.
I understand that Sir Cliff hopes to return to his habit of releasing an annual festive season song in 2017.
In the meantime, here is my nod to a great time of the year, bringing together those who are absent

HANGING AROUND
Was it a Friday - going into Saturday...
Just another routine "does it matter?" day?
The call came in around two in the morning
The sort you can get without any warning.
"Come quick" it said, "there's been a death",
A case of someone fresh out of breath.
The timing was poor - aye, there was the rub,
We were nearly due to book in for our grub.

WORDS FROM THE GREAT MAN
The Brexit saga rumbles on, with heated words from both sides, but it is worth recalling the words of
Sir Winston Churchill that resonate strongly down the years.

but not comprised. We are interested and associated, but not absorbed."
I think his choice of the word "absorbed" has historical...

AUTUMN'S CLOAK
Autumn quietly reaches out and gifts Summer her cloak
To cover the bright capricious head from the change she can't revoke.

AN UNKNOWN SOLDIER GOES HOME
Peacetime made him a stranger
To a life that had been denied;
Returning to unknowing city...
Quiet town and countryside.
Peacetime made him nervous,
Despite being a warrior before;
Now changed beyond all understanding
By what he had met in war.
Peacetime brought its own fears
And new battles to be won,
With fervent prayers that what he'd known
Would not b...

DOG DANCING
For Fran and Charlie
..................................
Have you ever seen a dog dancing...
Cavorting to an unheard canine beat?
Jaws apart, joyous grin enhancing
Upward flight from all four nimble feet.
Have you ever seen a dog dancing...
Eyes alight fixed on the outstretched hand
Of its human partner in innocent romancing?
Never still for long enough to stand.

FUEL FOR THOUGHT
We breath air because we must
And not because we might.
Induct...compress...combust
Powers life to ignite.

THE POETRY JUDGE
How do you get considered...
elected or selected...
To decide on the worth of another's work,
And how it should be respected?
Is it just an ego trip...
The way to poetry fame "to be",
A judge of poems whose taste will lurk
In the pages of posterity?
Are there certain forms expected...
And names of familiarity?
Is it likely to be rejected
If you're unknown...

SAME THING
I felt for that fellow the other day
Hand hard against face as if to say
Why am I forced to suffer this way?
I smiled in sympathy as we two met
While he winced a response I won' t forget
As my "Earache, old chum?" acknowledged his fret.
"Nah", he replied, with a hurry-by tread,
"Mobile phone..." - from a quickly shaken head.
"Same thing!" I thought - and just as q...

POUNDS (NO SHILLINGS) AND PENCE
I was chatting to the fellow who operates the till
In the local corner shop just down the street,
And asking for a chocolate bar I recalled a child's thrill
When leaving school and buying one as a treat.
Paying a total of sixpence from the cash of yesterday -
You got two hundred and forty <twenty shillings!> to a pound -
And how that bought a chocolate bar to send me on my w...

LENINGRAD - a Cold War memory
Let me take you back forty years - to when simple Freedom made me glad
To a different time and a different world - and a March trip to Leningrad.
It was a Thomson Holiday long-weekend - four days away all told,
That appealed you see to a pal and me - adventurous and bold.
We sat aboard that Aeroflot flight thinking what our trip might bring
And I confess to some misgivings whe...
