Thanks Ferris for feeling uncomfortable and appreciating the mood of the poem!
Thanks Kevin; it's incredible how many pubs the Victorians built - with all the building it was thirsty work! I'm glad you got the flavour.
Thanks for the likes Leon and Colin too.

I am glad I found this poem. An important subject. I saw the coverage of the anniversary on TV and people were taking flowers for great, great, great 'uncles'. Not many great grandfathers and I realised that the soldiers who died were too young to have become fathers themselves. That is very sad.

The words appear simple, but they ask all sorts of questions about the appeal of popular music. The title, and many of the lines, upturn expectations. The author is a songwriter. I like this a lot.

your rhymn is always right on. poets llike you and me and others have special insights that comes in the form of a blessing from God. But it must be used for encouraging others by helping them realize others feel the same. But cant express their emotions. your poems are part of that great volume of poems that serve that purpose. Keep up your good work.

Since putting this poem on I have discovered a photo I took in 1966 of the pub in question before alterations. Please not the unloading of kegs from wooden crates of a contemporary lorry and the barrow. Plus the cockerel sign, which I think was Courage brewery. Thanks for viewing . I couldn't get rid of the blank border (edit pane in the way).

Hi Ray
Just googled the Father Redcap to get a better feel for the poem. It looked an impressive building, but I'm not sure how it would have worked with male strippers behind the bar.
Really enjoyed this one
Cheers Kevin

Hey Ray. I've been in preparation to embark upon a journey into unexplored territory (hopefully long-term) and I haven't been focused much on writing.
Life does get rather dull when all you seem to accomplish is another revolution on the hamster wheel--this is my way of kissin' it all off.
Good to hear from you, Ray, always..and hello there, Colin, David, and Emer--many thanks.

Hi MC We all know from a negotiating standpoint, union leaders and politician's demands are usually over the top, then when challenged through negotiation, fettled down to a more acceptable package "in this instance"by the democratic process existing in most EU member states.
On this speed shrunken planet imperialism is on its death bed radical change is sorely needed by way of a united Europe as an example to the rest of the world.
And as one wise commentator quoted to me on here at W.O.L.

good work David. I particularly like the third verse - 'but how can I forget myself when I need me to remember to forget?' No escaping ourselves is there!
'being worrying' last line?
all the best and thanks for posting.

Ken - what do you think of the latest utterances from the
EU's "John 'Claws' Junkshop"? Even avowed "Remainers"
seem dubious about the intentions. But it surely endorses
what has been suspected from when the Referendum
Party(Goldsmith/Walters) warned against what was planned
- including an EU army and non-accountable police force -
and was roundly mocked for its "ridiculous" assertions.
Power does strange things to those on the Continent!!
Perhaps JCJ sees an emperor's role on offer?

Great stuff! Leadbelly meets potbelly in a tear-tugging
rendition of a theme to break the heart - with a tune
that takes the biscuit. Worth the wait - for the way it
evokes a lot of "Snickers" from this listener.

I know of the old adage: "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" but, while accepting that there is a temptation
to produce derivatives of successful stuff, there have to
be limits! It is lazy and unhelpful to pass this sort of
thing off as "original" - 100% deserving of being found out
and flashed up for attention. I have located similar
activity in biography - with whole paragraphs clearly
"leeched" from other works to suit the purpose of the
newly published author responsible. Referencing is one
thing, but plundering is something else entirely!

The idea behind the poem is that while someone may look fine on the outside, they could be fighting on the inside. Don't be afraid to ask someone if they are okay, and press them a little if you think they're lying. At first glance at this poem you saw something optimistic about life, but if you analyze it you may see that just beyond the surface, there is a hidden meaning

Thanks for commenting David. I quite accept on re-reading the poem that it poses more questions than maybe it should, and therefore falls short of a satisfying read. I suppose I "filmed" it in my mind. It can be a dangerous area in poetry I think to stray too far away from the blueprint. Two into one doesn't necessarily go! I respect you and Colin as you know and your honesty is a worthwhile thing mate. Your assessment was accurate neverthess.

I'm not sure I understood this one Raymondo but it kinda blew my mind to bits a bit - almost feels like half a dozen poems blended into one.
Living dangerously or writing dangerously? I've been experimenting with the latter of late. Well, it makes me laugh if nothing else and others can join in if they like.

Always a pleasure David to read your detailed vignettes of places and their peoples. Here you have the whole range of experiences that are happening in local lives and the unashamed exploitation of tourist areas for big boy's benefits. A whole social tapestry within the poem and lovely sculptured lines with lots of detail . "Endless bland deceit" is a winner for me. No unnecessary words for their own sake too.

This tale of feline ferocity is certainly consistent in
maintaining the interest. In my case, I was reminded
how a poem of mine that contained the lines -
"When you look at me like that,
I want to go and kick the cat..."
was returned by the editor of a small poetry press with
a scathing rejection highlighting my cruel reference to a
sentient creature...ignoring its subsequent lines...
"When you smile at me like that,
I want to go and kiss the cat."
Meow!!
