Lynn, I've missed you! Thanks for commenting on the 'poo' poem.
I don't log on daily, sometimes only twice a week, and then I do try to catch-up with reading Poetry Blogs, and making comments if I wish. I must look like a comment-hog sometimes, but I have to do it when I can. So I tell myself - don't worry about it - just enjoy your couple of hours. There are some fine poems on WOL these days, and many fine poets who have not returned after a short 'relationship' with the site. It is impossible to be 'all things to all men', yes?
I like 'Teardrops in my Coffee'.

Hi Steve. The last five lines have multi purposes, when it come down to where we should ALL lay the blame for a lot of shit that goes on in this world.
Running a very close second to todays horrific 'events'
and probably going some way towards causing it....
Misunderstanding.(on both 'sides')
Then the usual suspects, our SELF-made enemies-
Greed.
Pollution.
etc
etc
etc
etc.
regards.P&S.

What an absolute corker of a poem! I love the louche use of words that express the alien yet very real representation . I love the feeling of frozen motion and big brother watching. Splendid stuff.

I like this, Steve.
After the atrocities of such as the bomb in Belgium today, I'm left thinking that it was just an ordinary day for the people that were battered and killed by the bomb blast. Makes you think!

I really like many of the words or expressions in this piece Teju but I have one criticism to make. Having read through it several times I feel it needs some glue to lock it together. Many of the great lines seem singular and really require bringing to life either with other lines or by clearing out the non effective words in between them.
Good to see you posting this sort of work. Well done!

Okay ... so here's my edit .. er written 6 years later. What do you think?
The Poetess
It was the twelfth
Of the twelfth
and
She searched for
10 different ways
To say the same thing
Wrote 9 down
Pondered on 8
Chose the best 7
At 6 she thought she was complete
Then decided to use the first 1
In her pursuit to find
The perfect muse
Move away from the vacuous norm
She travelled
Sojourned many less-trodden shores
Met a rainbow of natives
With their golden pots of customs
Learnt popular forms of greetings
In various languages
Their clicks, whistles and phonetics
But only ever spoke in her mother tongue
Although inspired by
The smell of fresh, welcoming exotic fruit
A multi-dimensional array of intricate colours
The wind blowing her thick, jet black comb-twisted tresses
The swish and the swash of waves beating solid rocks
Luke warm coconut water sipped through a stripy straw
The sun casting shadows over weathered palm trees
The rhythmic motion of ebony biceps owned by pedlars massaging their patrons
Tepid salty water occasionally tapping the tips of her toes
She wrote nothing on her pad but, “When?”

Hello Graham,
Sh@tting yourself yet? I am.
Another excellent book on the subject is Bill Bryson's "Mother Tongue".
Lancs - good points about cultural experience which I hadn't considered. The interesting exercise is to associate the sound of languages from nations where we don't have as great an historical/cultural link such as Polish or Italian or Portugese etc.
When the kids were little we used to play a game on long car journeys whereby they had to say what pieces of music reminded them of, like Ravel's Bolero - Snakes.

Good morning Mr&Mrs D...(and Benji D!)...;O)
we apologise for not getting back to you sooner, but we've been up to our scrawny necks in one thing and another (hundred).............;o)
and re doing the 'disappearing act' for a while, well that was due to a certain lady (no names mentioned Patricia) who was left in charges of the 'controls' with the purpose of updating our profile, and ended up pressing all the wrong keys!
so having gone into an embarrassing forced retirement from WOL,we decided to let the shame down for a while-
hahaha!
Now,with the Master of the house (yeah right) at the wheel,so to speak, things, your friends are back to normal-or as normal as they medicinally can be-LOL!
lorra lorra love-

I've never had a long run on stage and never intend to. I therefore do not have to think about my audience. I just like to observe but I will tell the lads when I see them again. Thanks for reading and commenting.

I haven't got that far into it yet, Harry, to find out; it's a bit heavy.
I like the question though. Some time ago I heard on the wireless an ask-around inviting listeners to say what they thought languages sounded like.
French was sexy, German aggressive, American English chewing gum. British English was said to sound like a glass of milk to Johnny Foreigner.
I wonder what we make of Polish or Arabic or Urdu or Spanish. Answers on a postcard please....
