I agree with Jackie, that's very moving, quite brought a lump to me throat, it did :/ You have a very original way of writing that's quite intriguing.

Harry, I absolutely LOVE this poem! It's wonderful. It could easily be taken for one by e.e.cummings. Wisp as a sea frond; merry-dance flicker; Friendly as help your smile was, welcome-wide .....just gorgeous :) I really hope you write more in this style.

Hi ian.
You forgot the last line
"I'ts being so cheerful that keeps me going"
Of the gates to the back breaking factory?

Ha - cross posting :)
Thanks for y'note on me tree pome :) I was having a bit of a go at Wordsworth's idea that we lose our 'visionary gleam' when we get older. Remember I mentioned it in The Raven that time? Anyway, fuck Wordsworth :D

Mmm - lots to like in this piece Ian. Some of the sonics are just wonderful, right from the start:
A sky bleached like old bones
dug from damp earth on an autumn morning.
For me, it sometimes leans too far into the world of supernatural that you love to occupy, this for example:
Grotesque shadows disembowel before him,
letting loose the dizzy demons he keeps hidden.
BUT - then you have these lines which make it great again (for me, anyway):
And when those slow, heavy feet come down
the pavement shakes and dust drops from the clouds.
Interesting choice of structure - what inspired the couplets?
Title's ace too.

Wow. So much in here, snatches and gasps of ideas and back-stories. Kind of mirrors that behind-the-hand whispering that goes on in small communities (I'm from a village, I recognise it heh).
Loving the really clever vernacular. Brings to mind Annie Proulx's genius touch with dialogue.
I think this is a very clever poem, the flow is perfect, and I think it would work well on stage as well as on the page.

I really enjoyed reading this up until that last stanza. It kind of brought me up short. There seem to be words missing, blanks, absences. I'm not sure if that is the intended effect on the reader? It's the 'why should it' line that jars the most.

Excellent interview - nice one Louise! :) I believe that absolutely - the taking poetry to the people, it's one of my big beliefs too. And we are not alone.
*massive kick up the bum*
Will that do? ;)
Look forward to seeing you perform this at some point, and good luck for the bid!! Woohoo!

Julian,
When I think of those poor unsuspecting innocents
who politely listen to me reading my bloody stuff, I feel so grateful that I would do handstands for them.
Entertainment!...It`s got to be entertainment!
(we do it for the `kick`, why shouldn`t they get a bit of pleasure also?)
Sounds like you`re having a good time.

Thank you Lea, thank you Tommy, I appreciate your comments. I half expected to be pulled up over 'gloam'. I knew it should really be 'gloaming' but it turns out Keats used 'gloam' so I took that as an auspicious precedent.

Tommy,
It is about the electronic machinery available in workshops to make joints in wood etc. You just input the dimensions and the machine cuts it out for you. Now available in a small workshop not just in the big ones. Wondering where the traditional wood working skills will go longer term?
