This poem is charming. Who could resist such a plea?
Ditto a 'Jonathan' lover; it's on a shelf beside my bed. I must get the Zen book mentioned here and have a look.

Simply great poem. An insightful use of 'the constancy of change' idea which is both interesting and well constructed.

Hi Ann,

Thank-you for the tip. I'm not sure how that works. Here is a poem for you to read.

Carrying you

There is an eternity in that hand
when your fingers wrap around
the shakier experience of mine.

You feed, stop, smile, and look
so new into the old corrupt world.

You look into our eyes and just
register above the moon of food.
Your mother’s breast glides you
punch-drunk through the waves
of her nourishing milk-ocean.

The feast strengthens, empowers,
the great quench ennobles us all.

We are your parents, the well
that nourishes you, you disarm us.

We look at those small moments,
a mosaic-microcosm of you,
and we relish the tiny achievements.

Each step of development, we go
with you in awe of the wondrous,
of the greatest goal, of the banal.

And our prize is your smile,
the scent of your wisp of hair,
the touch from the minute
in those hands already creased,
folded for the toil ahead of you.

Our burden is to lessen the load
on your soft back.
We carry you happily
in the embrace of hope.

I paint with you in my arms.
I paint the future and carry you with me.

I thought this was really sweet. A lovely warm poem and it mentions two of my favourite books too (although I thought Zen and the... made me feel a bit inadequate....mainly cos I am sooo the person who would leave the tap dripping forever)

It's one of 'those' words isn't it... I liked the poem; evocative and to the point. I understand some people find it offensive and of course it's been used as a term of abuse and as such is loaded.

It partly reminds me of when I saw the Vagina Monologues a few years ago, when the final invitation from the performers was for the audience to join in saying 'that' word loudly to celebrate it.

Cheers Cynthia. Iain ;o)

I can probably see where you are coming from Graham. I must admit that 'cunt' isn't a word that I have ever considered poetic. I have used it once but it was in a funny rant - it brings out that wicked school boy humour in me - sorry Cynthia - I can't help it. However, it is good to read a poem occasionally that shakes you up. There is so much 'samey' stuff on here. When someone sticks their head over the parapet, you have to applaud them for their bravery and putting cunt to one side, there is much of merit in the poem.

Hi Vincent. Just to say, if you want me to see your comments, it's better to put them on my profile page in case I don't see your page for a while. You'll soon get the hang ot it. I love your flamenco poem. "jasper spanish" = great. Maybe you might like to try posting a poem as a blogg? Maybe just one to dip your toe in the water? You may get some more feedback then.

Crikey! When I read this for the first time I thought you'd had a turn Cynthia. Then I starting reading all the female comments applauding your bravery and I was doubly astonished.
I have never considered the word in any way attractive (usually reserving it for acknowledging BMW drivers). I would certainly never use it in my work, assuming I would be thought crude. However it does make a woman (using it) sound worldly.
Brave perhaps, but like Janet, I thought it lacked imagination as a piece. And I think Ben and Gerry's is better.

Thanks, Dave, for your kind comments on 'The Two Sides of Pride' - you are right, there are still many needs around us (not all of them evident these days, which makes them more easily ignored if that is what one wishes.....)

I enjoyed 'Kids in a Cemetary' very much - lovely thought, that, kids jumping on one's grave!....

Lastly, I hope that you find retirement enjoyable: I have never been so busy since I did so!

No-one's ever told me my knob was old fashioned before! Somehow 'Cock' or 'Dick' don't do it for me (so to speak) and all the other euphemisms just stand out like a sore...whatever, when in a poem. There is something inherently silly about willies.

Powerful poem Kathryn. Cauterize me sounds so painful. I guess it's like when you melt the unravelling ends of a bit of nylon rope to stop it fraying. But maybe you could be gently rubbed into some nice soft felt! "Wrap me in cotton wool and felt me." mm

Thanks again Izzy for a sterling effort. I think your dreams of a filthy Feb. are already being realised...and you wait until my latest poem; a thinly disguised paen to your journalistic efforts being akin to wrestling in butter holding a large caber. It is nearly finished. Just have to find a rhyme for cunnilingus and I'm done.

Keep up the great work.

Well, you can put me down as a 'yesss'...although I was indelibly scarred by an early girlfriend who found the word mortally offensive and I don't think ever quite forgave me for using it.

I have happy memories of my five year old brother calling me that over Sunday lunch...instantly I knew it wasn't going to be me that got into trouble over that one!

Not sure how it would work the other way round...so to speak. What's accepted poetic terminology for knobs these days?

: )

You have a sharp mind for creating a scene with some visceral images. I think some of the longe rlines like 1/2 & 5 could be condensed to evoke the images more concrete. Tangerine is a good image, a bitter fruit to be dissected, undressed and consumed (like love?).

The last 3 lines make a bittersweet and crushing statement, sardonic with a backhanded compliment.

Good stuff - mucho enjoyed.

Love the image of a turin shroud and the comparison you give is the exact opposite of Stendahl Syndrome (a real syndrome that causes people to hallucinate when faced by beautiful art). Some strong lines in here and some linking stanzas (maybe one or two of these could go). You have some good images in this poem and all it needs in my opinion is a bit more brevity to enhance them.

My fave stanza :

Faced with ashen supplication

From an irritating husband

Saying all the cliched bobbins

People spout in situations

Such as this

A promising poem.

Ah yes, the dream time indeed! It does seem so long ago now, yet on the other hand, more vivid than ever. Thanks for looking at Andy Williams and Sandy Denny. The latter feels fragmentary and unfinished to me, that I haven't done her justice. So I will have another go at it some day. Btw, I see there are two different John Martyn biographies on Amazon, and one of them is to be reissued, updated presumably, later this year.
