Nature's great beauty counters humanities frequent ugliness, this is something I have taken comfort in for a long time now.
I know I am damaged in part, but also in part healed.
The above poem is a moment that I experienced which tore me down to my boot laces...there are frequently such moments of which I am glad.
Thank you for your comment, and for the likes Helene and Tom.

Short and sharp...and all the more potent for it. Agree with SG about that last line while wondering if "graphic" might have
effectively replaced "graphite".

I’ve reaped what
I hadn’t voluntarily sown,
For I was once and forever taken,
And shortly disowned.

Good memories brought back to life.

Some games are better not played
But in youthful days games are a chase
Well played at times, and destroyed at other times
Choices we make, prices we pay
Some games are better never played

"There were things there in its darkness that made me weep
But still I pursued its golden ring throwing caution to the wind," are the lines that I resonated with, blindly diving into things is something that I often used to do.
Thank you for this, Tim.

Lives, for a while,
At least, usurper
Of the breaths of truth..."

Thank you all. Yes, one life to live; and hopefully the next poem will be a good one, always. That's the dream. I write because i have to, it's not a choice. These poems are my children, but i am as much a beadle as a parent, and i give them tough love. First drafts are always failures, at best a guide towards that which is yet to come, someday. Ah yes, someday. But will someday ever come? All art is abandoned: there's no such thing as a perfect poem; it is merely the goal towards which i drive them.

To some, a Damascene experience is the easiest way to erase one's past indiscretions.
Poachers turned Gamekeepers are many!
Sadly today's cancel culture seeks to erase the uncomfortable actions of our forebears.
We all have but one go at life, make of it what you will and live with the consequences
All this of course opined from a safe distance!

I think the strength of this one is in its simplicity. It draws out the pain that languishes in understanding the outcome. It draws a comparison to the final walk of death row knowing what the outcome will be.
Excellent!

Yes,
we must if we are to be truthful and willing, split ourselves wide open for all to see. We must dissect our wasteful past (if it is so) in order that we do not waste what little time we have left.
No tiptoeing around our own egos...smash ourselves against the rocks and spill into the greater ocean.
You'll find few takers here... but plenty willing to pass judgement from a safe distance.
Great writing.
David
Of course one should never return to a lit fuse..no matter how withering it may seem, limp might be a better definition...yes limp would define it rather better.
Still, a wonderful poem from which nothing should be permitted to detract.

Screw CanCult, disclose everything.
Stunning though predictable, how an arbiter for the practise of cancel culture can later decry its existance, "none so blind" they say...oh hypocrisy.
Keep writing, no matter the herodic hand washing.

This sounds like a fine and worthy retreat Tim.
The storm builds to a cressendo after which only the calmness of its eye has a say on where it cast's you.
Either to the wild winds, or as in your case the safety found behind walls which you can choose to build with whatever debris you have retained from the storm that made you.
Great idea and imagery.
David.

Thanks, Graham, John and MC. In truth, this has to be a silly, shallow poem because it is about silly, shallow people who are posing as the saviours (in a totally unfunded, bankrupting sort of way) of some cherished style of life which no longer exists and probably never did. They force themselves to smile and look cuddly, but nasty bigotry is only just below the surface.
Graham - Yes, when I was in public service the rule was never to apply for a job unless you were pretty certain to get it. Gambling is always a bad idea unless losing is not going to hurt you. I think Macron, with depressing arrogance, made that mistake.
And thanks to Manish, Aisha, Auracle and Holden for liking this.
