M.C.(Had to come back)...when I think of some of the treacherous, snidey, robbing bastards who have `trespassed` against me in the past I find the idea of forgiveness a million miles away from `pious` - more like heroic....But ifthe situation in the Middle east or Ireland is to ever be resolved (for instance) someone is going to have to forgive someone.
And be fair, you can`t get in to most churches for the noise of the singin`

Do not go gentle into villanelle
The ling'ring lines will cast their spell
And where they take you, Who can tell?
So tell your tale with passioned care
With strength of heart for those who dare
Do not go gentle into villanelle.
Your wit will sparkle, fear no storm
with words both joyous and forlorn,
And where they take you, Who can tell?
So whether by the muse inspired
Howe'r imagination fired
Do not go gentle into villanelle.
Release your verses, let them fly,
No poems under bushels,shy,
And where they take you, Who can tell?
The power of writing has no bounds
From ink-tied words to spoken sounds
Do not go gentle into villanelle
And where they take you, Who can tell?
oops I didn't mean to write all that - it just fell out onto the page.( in the style of Dylan Thomas'famous villanelle 'Do Not Go Gentle Into The Night' one of my favorite verses.
I think your poem about Mum is so observant
love the line 'eating your meals with a view of the lawn because
a)it appeals to me
b)It cleverly ties the whole of the poem together.

A dark and pregnant poem this, carrying the weight of winter, with its bleak and cold blanket, which can sometimes feel oppressive. There's also an underlying grief here...
I like it Shoeless - nicely succinct, with a 'bare' feeling about it

Ian - maybe he could have improved the poem if the father had been playing with his ukulele at the window, instead of gazing out at deer...

I couldn't help noticing that his few tiny alterations to the poem all made it a worse poem. How could he imagine changing 'more graceful than the kingfisher
that darned the river south of Rannoch Moor' .to 'more graceful than the peregrine
falcon landing at Bossington Beach'. was an improvement? The blokes a clunking oaf!

I suppose it all depends on who you are really writing for. If you are writing with the intention of being published seriously and selling your books to the masses (which is pretty rare even with great poets), then you are probably best saving your scribblings for THE book.
If poetry is your hobby, a means of engaging with like minded people, then I think the risk of it being plagiarised is a risk worth taking. Otherwise, what do you do with it - stuff it in a drawer? It would be like being a musician but never playing for anyone but yourself - for me there would be no incentive to carry on writing.
Also, I imagine that if someone is hell bent on plagiarising the work of others, they can do it from a book just as easily as they can do it from an internet site.

I suspect that the Ministry of Defence (defending WHO is the nub!) has an unwritten mantra that soldiers are the last to get money spent on them and their needs, even less to help them fight wars beyond these shores. I doubt if any accounting of MoD spending over the past few decades would present a shining example of how to place taxpayers' cash wisely or caringly. I'd enjoy being proved wrong - especially considering the above account of experience in foreign fields of combat - but somehow think it very unlikely. I would love to see MoD employees obliged to form a territorial unit ("The First Regiment of Pen Pushers"?) - and be required to serve for a mandatory period in the theatres of war it is meant to supply.
