I thought it was sad. I liked the brevity of it and the way you paint the mood.

The Other’s Worlds
by J. Otis Powell!
Weird whispers cross datelines
Fine lines of immortal volition
A history of where the blues were born
Whirlwinds that bound de man up
Chain de man down
Willie wiggles then he falls
Willie wobbles and falls regular as daylight
Like pain of uncured sickness
Like blowing - relentless winds
Wild whistles of whiskey wills
Tell secrets that cloak resolutions
Eerie echoes bounce off brick brain blockades
Wander in subconscious valleys
Like demons in deep sleep
Holding healing at bay fencing the body off
Form soul and from voices of angels
It is a commencement of wills at war
A burden for friends - foes
Loved ones / enemies
It’s a yoke that dominates identity
And distorts the smells in the air
Wishes from other’s worlds well-up inside
There is little isolation from weathered want
It’s piped in like air conditioning
It creeps like a thick fog hiding all but itself
The self is warped
Watered down
Withered

isobel. thanks for your reply. im sorry the comment i made seems personal. i often write a point and it comes accross like this. i was really just interested in the observation and the two ways of looking about things how they are opposite and how the perceptions of the mentally ill are not usually recieved as 'valid'. you should of course be able to write opinion without fear of backlash and your original comment was fine really and also valid (im sure im very dfficult to live with - for 'sane/insane' friends..im lucky to have any friends at all but i think thats true of us all. it would be an odd world if we all agreed...sanity is a debatable concept.
no need for apology, but accepted nonetheless. thanks xx

Thank you Ray and Francine - I'm glad that you got something out of this. I think we all need to have a poem that bombs now and again - it keeps us in touch with reality :)
I had a feeling this would be too sweet for the WOL palette but wanted to keep it with the rest of my poetry cos it means something to me. My blogs on here operate much like a photo album...
The inspiration was a glorious morning cuddle in bed with my 8 year old. She is growing up fast and I doubt she will be wanting to do that for much longer. The poem plopped out very easily cos it wasn't so much about crafting. I agree with your suggestions Ray and I'm going to implement them!
Philip - you were lucky to hold the blog top spot for longer than a nanosecond :)

It's odd, isn't it, what attracts comments and what not?I thought this was really sweet and charming, the last 2 lines lovely. You could be well rid of the holy spirit line, though, and maybe put "who aren't" after robbers and murderers.

Isobel. I have just been reading charlottes page and noticed a comment you made there...
do you know what? form the experience of the manic depressive condition/bi polar personality...i can honestly say that living with the so called 'sane' sometimes unbearable, never mind difficult.
sometimes like existing in flatline.
I am attracted to most my friends by their range of emotion, depth of empathy and understanding, capacity for excitement and generally enriching experience as people who make the world real to me. I dont look at the condition/label, i forget the name of it, get it mixed with the others for I care less about it than for the love my friends and the need/want for their presence in my life.
mainly the sane bore me to death and their blinkered vision makes me laugh.
living with anyone is difficult, life is difficult x

aha xD don't worry about it.
I'm manic depressive - i wouldn't want my girlfriend to go cheating on me or hitting me. Everyone has different perspectives on the whole affair and my opinion is that he did drive her to it.

haha apologies to any real scots readers...this was my attempt at an irvine welsh style stab at the Dundee dialect of which my only experience was witnessing big nasty bar fight and waiting at hospital for friends to come out after the fact.
Dennis the Menace was created and written in Dundee. Little hard knock ;)
also based on time spent living in Glasgow and travelling in scotland this accent might be a bit skewed ;p
bring back hong kong fooey, dennis and the late great cartoons of my youth!!
hope you like stella, im waiting for batman :)

haha i like your point isobel. the personal detachment has allowed a great flow and gentle humour.
julians comments - absolutely. i believe the art of poetry is to channel the subconscious inspiration. i am a follower of C. Jung and regard his theories on the psychological relationship with the collective subconscious and his work on archetype to be both fascinating and real for me.
applied to poetry and writing/arts in general Jung sates the gift of the artsist to be a connection and a vehicle, a medium almost (but not in spooky ghost way :)x
i always recommend the book 'women who run with the wolves' Clarissa Pinkola Estes, as a great example of Jungian psychological analysis of writing, particularly for the female experience. Its all about fairy tales x smashing read.
'artifice' - indeed it cannnot be faked Julian x crafting is something i m much better at if i let go, as stella has here.

Am being nosey and commenting on your comments re Ted Hughes. I don't really think anyone can judge another for sure without knowing them personally. Films and media can portray things in skewed lights. I imagine living with a manic depressive would be very difficult, to say the least. I don't think it's a crime to fall out of love, either. I would tend to judge a person on how they treated their kids, mind. That is a completely different relationship. It can be made difficult when people separate though. The kids and the ex partner can become a package that not all people can unwrap.

That is a very hideous body. I'm not sure why he bothered with the red underpants. It couldn't really get any worse or better for that matter. Quite why men do this to themselves, I've no idea, since I've never met a woman who likes it...
A fun idea for a poem Larisa - you prefer to fuck brains - so that's where I've been going wrong! LOL x

She sounded like my kind of woman until we hit the racism...
I found the poem hard to get into, like Steve. I like the lines that people have picked out already.
I don't think of it as a political poem - more of one commenting on society and changing values.
Comment is about Mayday (blog)
In my view, and experience, good writing tends to operate at two levels, the conscious and the subconscious. We cannot always know what we are writing until we have written it; and even then not be sure.
I would go further and say that those who try to craft subconscious consciously - the clever beggars - risk having the result smacking of artifice.
Well done with this stellar piece, Stella.
Comment is about At Home With Adolf (blog)
I'm with Rachel on this one. I think it's great when poets can move beyond their own realm of experience and write on different themes. I think if this had been based on personal experience a little more anger would have come through, which might have spoiled it. Then we'd all be saying 'Aww poor Adolf - look what he had to put up with' ;
It was great to hear this performed last night. x

In response to White Noise I was taking off from your comforting words at the end, "Afterwards, I would coax her out from under the sofa,
Stroke her hair when she would sob.
It’ll be okay, baby,
We’ll be okay." At times I settle for such resolve as in; It's sawright wit me because it's alright already. Always has been, you know what I mean? White noise as a metaphor is very real for me.I hope I have been more clear.

the inherent cleverness is its gift stella x it doesnt matter that you never saw it from outside i believe poetry and the poet can be gifted on a purely subconscious level. i always work back to front, in my art work, dance appraisal/critique and writing. i make, then study. i think its a common method.
ps i think i am unique in having would be fascist grandparents?? who would think?
