Speech Motion
Monday 30th October, 2011
If your favourite type of event is an open, welcoming, relaxed, bohemian, multi-genre happening; if it involves pulsating poetry with professionally home-brewed short film, a well-plucked ukelele, an internationalist, Bordelaise, Berlinesque flavour; all compered by the incomparable Auld-Reekie-fringe-slam-winning Catherine Brogan who, in spite of her hitching record managed everything without a single one; all two minutes from the closest station; where on earth could you go? Erm.
Stoke Newington, of course! To Speech Motion, in fact.
Highly recommended for open mic readers.
What not to expect: rules, timekeeping, known finish time, posh seats, real ale.
What to expect: friendliness, quality, top alternative arts on draught.

This poem was penned and read aloud at the open-mic session in Nelson last Friday 28 Oct:
St Paul’s Letter to the Anti-Capitalists
(for Giles Fraser)
by Richard MacSween
Charity suffereth long and is kind
But this has gone on long enough
Charity is not easily provoked
But there are health and safety issues
Charity never faileth
But this is a major tourist attraction
When I was a child, I spoke as a child
And let’s face it: you’re mostly kids
But when I became a man, I saw it was more complicated
Put away those canvas things
Now we see through a glass darkly
The lights are out and we’re losing money
Now abideth faith, hope and charity
But greater than these is turnover
Charity suffereth long
And if you don’t leave, so will you

What a great subject for a poem, John. It's a wonderful picture; even better than the one of Vinnie Jones grabbing Gazza. Greg

Well done, Lynn, for putting your head above the parapet. There's more money to be made from Halloween than Guy Fawkes - that's one reason why it's being pushed.

Thank you everyone. I am not normally such a grouch, just don't think much of Halloween!
Stef,(Uncle Fester!) you are right about Guy Fawkes - he seems to have died a death, lol, or rather been forgotten about, although fireworks seem to last a whole month... oh dear, I'm starting off on another tangent now... lol. Night night from Mrs.moany Witch xx

Remembrance Sunday
Sunday 18th November 2007 8:41 pm
Yesterday being Remembrance Day
I made a point of remembering
And joined several hundred other rememberers
On the Town Hall Square
Where I bumped into Alec Simister
Who I hadn't seen for ten years
Now there's a man who could wear a bowler hat and rolled umbrella
As well as any city banker, retired guards officer
Or Orange Lodge member
His high cheek bones and straight black hair suggest he could be of the same lineage
As Vlad the Impaler or maybe Chinghis Khan
I was pleased that he remembered me
"I pissed my sides" he said "when I saw you in the paper,
Writing poetry, is that your latest scam?"
He was never one to mince his words.
A man constructed of dinosaur bones
His crushing grip staying on the hand for minutes
Then I drove to Stoke to visit my brother's grave.
It seemed a good thing to do it would have been his birthday today
Our street, which was falling down when we were kids
Is still falling down, the 70s makovers washed away by time
The entries seem to get narrower
But the cobbles, ever more subsided
Are still covered in dogshit
Our local pub Scrimmies, was as full as on any Sunday in my father's day
No miners now but everyone still looks old
Were these the people I went to school with?
I didn't remember them.
And they didn't remember me.
But the Bass tasted just like it used to!

Thanks. I finished it with the deadline for submissions looming, and therefore I had little time to polish it.
If it bombs (and the competition is always massively over-subscribed, so I am not holding out any hopes!) I may take it and give it a few tweaks.
I wanted to write a story in which nothing really happened, just to see if I could do it.

pollutes Mrs Berman's white sheets grey,
excited by flames this man with a match,
it snows in our yard in the summertime.'

Hi M.C.
Just wanted to thank you for taking the time to comment on Gen. Sec.
Actually the 'ain' isn't a mis-type, though I don't mind in the slightest your mental 'gain'. I used 'ain' in the Scottish vernacular(meaning own)i.e the Gen. Sec's main concern is his own
Like you, I'm always struck by the union officials who I am sure are substantially better paid than those they represent - hence the ditty
Again, many thanks

I enjoyed the mixture of nostalgia and hoped-for young romance that brings this story to life.
I felt that some of the punctuation (and a few
"and"s) could have be given more attention and
words like "holey" and "slobbering" needed no
repetition) - but -
the tale itself, the imagery and many of the
descriptive passages were well done.
I wanted to keep reading to see what happened -
always a good sign and the ending was very
imaginative.
Good luck with it.

hey Lynn-
on one hand you think(mistakenly)
that you would make'an excellent witch'
not as good as the 'Uncle Fester'
I would make-hee hee
I agree with the comments by Philipos
it is mainly an excuse for scrounging.
or
having your windows put through
if you don,t cough up-haha
you never seem to see many kids pushing
the effigies of Guy Fawkes
like they used to?
Tricia says she would make a bomb-
(forgive the unintended pun)
with me because I,m a little effigy.
she did,nt say what of though-haha.
enjoyed light heartedness
of the poem very much.
keep 'em coming

Nuther excuse for scrounging some say Lynn. But even the toffs our way send their kids round knocking on doors with welcome trickers.
Guess we all like bogeymen stories, depends on the area I spose and whether or not it is allowed to get out of hand. And yes, blame the yanks.

Very good Jack and very true. Although I was never a Punk I was and still am everything Punks went against (I just didn't like the music) I had always understood what they were saying. There has never been another youth movement (rebellion) since 1976. Today it’s all manufactured, music fashion and attitude. Popular music died many years ago, it's been regurgitated ever since. But it obviously doesn’t need me to tell you that.

Cynthia....apologies (I forgot to look up my profile) The political thing was on the home page (Julian)
I`m puzzled at the paucity of self criticism in what today passes as political poetry (what there is of it)
Also...the poor? What constitutes poverty in these days of wall to wall cars lining terraced streets? Why (exactly) are people poor these days?...Did the actions of the social security scroungers have no effect on the recent credit crunch troubles? So much of the poverty rhetoric these days is so dated.
I appreciate that your own efforts are more philosophical than political...but in all spheres man is a political animal.
I think the politic thing as now also on the discussion section.
Sorry for the delay.

Isobel I've borrowed the following from Lynn's site: lots of ice;
1 measure of lime;
3 measures of premium vodka;
top up with ginger ale/beer- stir.
Try placing a sliver of ginger-root in glass before ice.
Tell the drink of your love for it, close your eyes and take a deep-mouthfilling- glug...hold cocktail in mouth to warm slightly and swallow-ALWAYS swallow!
:o)
