This is an incantation, a prayer. Beautiful and right, so many will identify with it; and that, for me, is one indicator of the success of a poem. You'll have to give it a sharper title sometime, Rachel, that it merits. Greg

I actually think it looks rather good in the new version Chris. Not pointless or offensive at all! ;-) But it is your poem, write it how you feel it should be written! Nice talking to you! xx

yeah the phoenix. the dance is to "Birdsong" a piece of music I drummed up and is called the dance of death, one of the Life Dance routines where the dancers rise at the end. Can't say any more. It is very physical though.

I do like this one Emma. I like how short and to the point it is and I really like the way it alludes to things other than cigarettes...addiction is addiction, after all. No matter what...or who...you're addicted to :-)

I found your poems here to be a thrilling read. Very true to life and written in a way that many can identify with and yet they don't seem to me to be wallowing in self pity.
Some humour in the every day observations too. I really enjoyed reading. Thanks for these.

I'm a smoker and know people who've given up. I also know people who could relate to this in another sense too, not just cigarettes.
Maybe a change of title would put a different spin on it, especially if you wanted to perform it.
In which case Rodney's not far out with his idea of expansion. You could add a twist at the end referring to cigarettes.
Just a thought of course. Your poem, your call. :-)

Cheers for your comments on my Evil Weevils, Miss Rachel. Just re-read your Lady of Shalott Day; crackin' stuff. I'm tempted to do a sort of Spring Onion Woman response but I have neither time nor moral fibre at this moment. Catch you soon. Iain ;o)

Rodney: thanks for your comments regarding the metaphor :-) I think I'm in danger of overusing it a bit :-) The poem is about something in particular to me, but I haven't added any specific references to keep the poem a generalisation of the situation.

Generous use of the metaphor but it needs sharper lines and be about something in particular.

I love your poem 'Forgiveness' Antony...
Lines full of incredible imagery:
'I am married to mirrors of regret.'
'when you were different
by being too much the same to me
I was indifferent to you.'

Thanks for the kind words about my Uncle Fester.
I've been doing this as a performance piece about a month but support it by revealing books with Fester's Old Title crossed out and Bill Shakespeare's replacing it. I thought it needed this help so I was bit loath to post it bare, as it were.
I'm wrestling with the audio files at home so if I'm successful I'll try to add a reading to it.
Also just read If I Could. Beautiful. Mine are teenager/early twenties now, but the old saying is very true; "When they're young they break your arms and when their older they break your heart".

I like this one Kenny it, theres lots of quite soft language in it which reminded me of someone sitting near the sea and goes with the reflective mood of your poem. :)

Well now this is a clever little ditty. There has always been an ongoing debate as to who wrote Shakespeare`s works, with many countries claiming he plagiarized ideas from their poets. But its obvious that John Coopeys got the last word.... twas his ancestor!!!
