The Kiss

It started so tentatively.

Arms reaching awkwardly,

a frisson of fear until

her arms respond.

A nervous coming together of lips,

which then part

to allow a hesitant foray

past the confines of teeth.

And relax,

as tongues begin to twine,

at first timidly,

then with increasing confidence.

Gradually, the embrace becomes tighter,

yet more comfortable,

Heartache

Pains in the chest that woke me up at half three,

Ambulance to A & E isn’t where I want to be.

Trolley in a corridor,

Waiting for a doctor,

Nurses busy running round tryin’ to get the queues down,

Shiver while I’m waiting in a split-right-down-the-back gown.

Lying in the heart ward, wired up like a switchboard,

Watch the nurses passing, looking at their clipboard.

Christmas Fairy

I want to tell a story now, it happened long ago,

So gather round and pay a heed to me.

It tells us of the reason, ‘cause I’m sure you want to know,

Why the fairy sits atop the Christmas tree.

It had just got past midwinter and old Santa Claus was vexed,

The rebellious elves were going out on strike,

And Mrs Claus upset him with the news she gave him next,

That her mum wa...

Jackie And Frankie

In the garden was a snowman and the kids had called him Frankie
He came to life at midnight Christmas Eve
And he set off round the neighbourhood in search of hanky panky

As he passed along the street he met a snowgirl name of Jackie
Upon her head she wore a sexy hat
So he asked if he could talk to her and promised nothing tacky

Remaining safe from tooth and claw

Of spectral shades who cross the rift.

Goodbye

Replete with woodland’s banquet, now the flocks

Begin to gather for their winter break;

As trees cast off autumnal russet frocks,

A rustling blanket in the summer’s wake.

Till all at once a shared consensus makes

A turn, to arrow swiftly up so high,

The roads and fields were spectacular,

swathed in their pristine white mantle,

and the picture postcard blizzard

was spectacularly beautiful

looking through my window.

But I’ve had enough now.

There’s an expectation thrusting through,

Gun Control

If Americans want to go on killing each other,

that’s fine.

It’s their choice.

The rest of the world will go on

not dying.

Or not as much,

by means of a gun.

Positions are entrenched,

or so I read,

and gun control

is perceived as gun ban.

To me the emphasis is on ‘control’.

With so many dying,

it is self-evidently not under control now.

There is an argumen...

Love Of Summer

You may talk about the spring when all the world is new

Or autumn when the colours turn to brown

Then winter with its cold and stark monochromatic view

As the countryside puts on its snowy gown

But bringing forth the promises of warmth and hope and light

The season that for me outstrips the rest

Life In The Fast Lane

Wet day, rush hour, heading for the ring road

Short cut, rat run, cutting out the main road

Get into the wrong lane

Bumping on a low drain

Stop go, real slow, hitting every stop light

Strap them in the car and drop ‘em in the zig zags

Check they’ve got their schoolbags

He...

Out of the blue this phrase to make you wince

Until it hurts.

How do you cope

With feelings that were growing ever more,

Yet withered with the slamming of that door,

And death of h...

Wet Wednesday in Wakefield

The blazing embers of a winter sun

sink below the distant horizon,

as streetlights claim approaching night.

A solitary shopper treads the rain-sheened pavement,

hunched against the evening chill.

The drizzle has stopped for now,

promising to return, reinvigorated,

from the covering cloud

that attempts to veil the sunset.

Hands in pockets, hair bedraggled,

our travelle...

Fromage Hommage

I’ll gorge myself on Cheddar that was made in Cheddar Gorge,

And follow with a little slice of Lappi.

I’d even try a bootleg Brie that someone tried to forge,

And a Limburger is bound to make me happy.

The Wensleydale’s so crumbly that I’ll swap for some Roquefort,

Or maybe for a bit of Danish Blue;

Whichever one I have it always leaves me wanting more,

And the Feta is a ...
