It is most encouraging to have children put their minds to poetry.
Sadly, children DO kill other children.
"Lord of the Flies" comes to mind - depicting how children
create their own hierarchies, judgements and actions...
without adult guidance or control. The irony is that the
adults who unleash the weapons of destruction might be
seen as acting out for real the pretence of childhood games,
almost as if one is a rehearsal for the other.

Something he should keep forever. I still have all the poems I wrote with my mama. When I started writing poetry as a young teen, all I wanted more than anything was to have my own book out with a bunch of collaborators on it. My mom used to write poetry too, and I think that's where I got my idea from.

Either way, a lot better than some of the adult poetry I've seen posted. Great piece.?

Dear M.C. Newberry, I was looking at our very short conversation in my profile and taking a second look at my response to your lovely comment on my poem "I can olerate Death" I realized that what I said was quite a humdrum thing to say! The truth is I'm not good at commenting,I'm not good with the literal things, I am also not very crafty with words, or precise, for that matter; sometimes I ask myself why I bother to write, and then I remember: It's cause I got things to say. I'm young, that may be obvious to you who from what I understand are very experienced but I've been places. Places a young person shouldn't pass by that early on and I've seen things. Things that most people see when the greater part of their life has passed things that a few lucky ones will never see. And yes, I got stuff to say. This I do. So thank you for your comment! appreciate it more than you know! And allow me to rephrase my response: Yes, death does intrude into our minds! But God damn it, at my last minute, right before He takes me away I still got the last say with my last words! If I manage to beat him with my words and with my actions he doesn't really have the last say. I'll fight him like hell and even if I lose I'll know that through my fight I will have showed much more power than the only one he hold over us! He only has the power to eliminate us but He can't shut our mouths or the mouths of the ones we leave behind. I urge whoever bothers to listen: Speak up! Write out Loud! because "scripta manent"! And If we have to go before our time, if we can't go in our own terms, if He tries His best to deprive us of the right to hold our heads high and humiliate us we can still go kicking and screaming! And our screams will not be pleas and whimpers and cries of cowardice! They will be glorious curses and triumphant battlecries! Death lasts only a second but our existence, if we are loved, if we have have loved, can last forever. So, since you quoted W.E.Henley I'd like to do so as well:

"It matters not how strait the gate,
how charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate
I am the captain of my soul!

P.S. Forgive my fixation. I'm new at exposing my work and any kind of feedback is much sought! And definately deserving something more than: "Live like there's no tomorrow!" True as it may be!

Thanx again!

Mae

Hi Becky! Thank you for your nice words about my poem! I like your sample as well!
And I, too, love the idea of expressing oneself in a language other than their native one! For the same reason I like learning foreign languages! So far I know English, French and Turkish plus my mother language! I think it's fascinating to be able to see the world through eyes other than you own, to be able to communicate directly with people fron entirely different cultures. And let's face it, English is "linua franca", a universal language! It brings people who know it together! Keep slamming!

It's funny you should say that Brian. Completely independently from the fact that I posted our poem this morning, Erwann has spent the morning in his room turning out little poems, and some of them have quite blown me away. I was just thinking I should set up his own profile. Do you think that's allowed? (I wouldn't put a photo)

Yes Erwann it's adults pulling triggers
It's adults who are dropping the bombs
And destroying innocent children like you
And sending them into their tombs

I feel for the guy on the ground
Out of loyalty to the country he came
Betrayed by his leaders above him
Who only want to play their war games

I usually am quite reluctant
Putting your child and you in my poem
But your message it left me no choice Beck
But to leave it the way it was sown

Hi, Mae, thanks for commenting my profile! In fact, English is my native tongue, but I live in France, so when I try to put my poetry "out there" it's harder to be fully understood. That's why I've appreciated this website as a place I can share with people who do understand English!

I do sometimes write poetry in French though, and I'm absolutely all for writing in languages other than mother tongue too. We use slam poetry in our English as Second Language programme and the students absolutely love it - some even say it's easier and more liberating to write in English than to write in their own language, as the "rules" seem less constraining!

I've read your sample poem and I think it's great, and even your biography is written very poetically. I look forward to exploring more of your work.

The case for parental love is well put from a particular POV.
It might be said that those who decide to bring children into
the world have a duty to do the best they can to ensure
they are a credit to them and others. Anything more is a
bonus for those personally concerned. No one is able to
choose their parents but parents can and do choose to have
children and exercise huge influence for good or bad over the outcome. I would be curious to see something from
the point of view of offspring in a similar context.

The time was unique: we don't want to fight, but by jingo,
if we do, we've got the ships, we've got the men, we've got the money too!
Add to that, the women busy handing out white feathers
to men they thought should be in uniform, and the process
is well and truly up and running, with few willing to speak
against it. And who would have, with an aggressive
militaristic Germany seeking to expand its empire to rival
our own and invading its neighbours in pursuit of gain,
ground and glory? It can be said it was just as well we
had the blithe self-confidence to face up to the challenge:
who else would - or could - have? Even our US ally hung
back until 1917 when most of the fighting had been done
and the tide of war was beginning to turn in our favour.
The losses to the vital wartime generation were awful
but the alternative result was even worse to contemplate.
