Thanks to Jon and Anya for liking and to Sal, Peter, Taylor, Becky and Darren for commenting.
I have to confess that this piece is some part about older guys wistfully thinking about what if they had moved away and found work somewhere else. Also easy to look back and think that the earlier years were either worse or better according to your point of view.
But there is also another part to this based on the closures of certain industries in the U.K. which has and a detrimental effect on particular regions of the country that were heavily reliant on those localised industries for employment. This has meant they have struggled to recover. Sorry to rant a little.
Hey Becky
I had not considered it as live piece but I think I will give it a go. Cheers
But thanks once again one and all for reading
Martin

Hi Taylor (I see you've changed your profile picture! Who is the lovely doggie?)
This poem sent me to check my understanding of free verse once again, and I just found this quote on Wikipedia which speaks of your text for me:
"The American critic John Livingston Lowes in 1916 observed 'Free verse may be written as very beautiful prose; prose may be written as very beautiful free verse. Which is which?'"
I love the way the line lengths and pauses are varied, held together with linking images, and then the last four lines make 2 very powerful rhyming couplets.

Congrats again on getting Poem of the Week, and thank you for the kind comments. Although I've yet to perform open mic, I am planning on getting back into the scene of music again. Always something happening to be writing about there and in poetry.
Here's hoping it lasts for as long as possible. Thanks again Lynn.
Take care.?

My feet went missing on the bus,
Didn't report it and cause a fuss.
My dog was lying on them down there,
Showing his love and how much he did care.

That first stanza, I often ask myself the very same question when confronted with it on the page or in person. Great, concise piece reverberating with emotional output.?

I have no truck with "religious law" - recalling the term
"ecclesiastical law" protecting clergy of the established
church. Henry V111 was an astonishing monarch for
daring to take on the power of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church and winning here in this country in an age
when savage retribution was the norm when vying for
dominance in the name of "religious belief". Superstition
still holds sway in the form of religion even today and it is
essential that the law for all should take precedence over
these self-chosen types of mental conviction. The bottom
line - if you purport to be a "believer" - has to be whether
Christ or the Prophet would condone abuse. Surely not!

I can NOT believe this is autobiographical! That said...
And if your feet were bare
Would still see them there
By leaning over your toes
And peering down your nose?

This is fab Martin - really well written and reads beautifully.
Some great words and lines - I really like
And the way it was
Watching rings of trickled froth
Coagulate in spiralled signals of no more
Great stuff
