I think Ken must have forgotten to type some actual words into the comment box rather than just a mysterious question mark.

Great poem this - it has a fab deep beat to it that I would love to hear performed.

Thanks all,
I think it was the jelloid giganticism of that photo in John`s poem that made me (even at my age) recall all my old memories about when they used to be genuine.

John...???...the mind boggles...I bet you`ve made a lot of very knowing wives smile to themselves.

I guess that "calm" equates with the detached frame of
mind needed to make unpalatable decisions in war. But
who knows how a man sleeps at night in later years?
Do those many faces and the sounds of combat return
to provide a ceaseless commentary on the decisions
taken in other risk-filled times?

Juan,
Thank you for this. I loathe the terms 1st and 3rd worlds. Perhaps one day we can all live in the same world. I believe in the dignity of the human being. Today on TV I saw a man in his fifties who had just been deported from the USA back to Mexico. He was alone in a crowd of people in a similar situation. He was in tears. He had left his son behind in the US. What mean spirited people do this? Thanks again. Keith

Here's to the Tierney brothers, Michael and the late much
missed Kieran from Co. Galway, who ran two of the best pubs here in Marylebone, one long gone and the other
now under threat since their departure, one from life and
the other from their memorable double act as genial head barman and loquacious landlord. I'm looking across at a photograph of Kieran in auspicious sporting company that includes a bearded but still youthful George Best in
happier days "at the bar" of The Duke of Wellington in
Crawford Street, London W1. The smiles of the faces
rewind time for me as one of the regulars after work in those distant days.

Thanks David - it is hard to justify any depth to this offering, it is full of holes in terms of a serious assessment; but I feel that may be a lone position and one that may well antagonise. Of course we must meet serious matters with wise heads, but what is wise when we rely on experts to do our thinking?
There is a parallel in the inhuman burning of the holocaust
because it was an institutionalised position . We can always burn a newspaper or indeed eat chips out of them(retro) without crime but then think also of the Nazi book burning.
You are right to allude to a laissez faire attitude; although perhaps we are too wound up by the media not to notice every nuance of decision making . Alas, what are we to do?

As for the job position, I think you refusal said a lot about your sanity. Mind you the 1.4 mil would come in useful.

I think you have got it in a nutshell SS . Because children are in need of acceptance and love they are malleable ; it is not until later that the shell develops and the subconscious start to play tricks. Life itself demands a trade-off just to survive. I think those monsters come back to haunt us.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi Ray,

It's a form of psychic violence - denying children their own dreams by imposing upon them the unfulfilled wishes/desires/dreams of their parents' own childhood yearnings. Cruel irony. I agree with elP too.

Hi Linda,

Censorship has being rampant since 9/11 - Patriot Acts 1 and 2.

What's also as insidious was Obama in 2012, through the revised NDAA, legalising propaganda on the US public with the nullification of the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948.

Your redacted poem sums up some of these issues nicely.

Thanks elP for your considered thoughts. I agree with you ; it is often the adults who impose themselves often without wisdom or listening to the inner child - my own experiences were with teenage step children, so I'm not directly qualified, except by intuition.

The Paul Simon song is wonderfully to the point.

It's sad, really--the entire poem. I mean, to impose upon a child's innocence so completely must be a kind of abuse--like cramming them into tiny little boxes and force-feeding them through tubes. Maybe the analogy is a bit of an exaggeration, but I can't help but think of how much talent gets squashed by adults who think they know so much, yet fail to see just how contrived and stupidly over-complicated they've made their own lives.

That's my rant for the evening. It's a very thoughtful and well-written piece, Ray.
