Can't speak for any experience sitting in a metal (zinc?) bath, but
I know well the procedure of lighting a coal fire in the various
small country homes my mother and step-father occupied back
in the 1950s. The previous day's issue of The Daily Telegraph - his newspaper of choice - was ideal "arm's width" for the correct
degree of draught that was sucked up the chimney and saw the
incipient incendiary flickerings flare into life. All done before
breakfast, of course!

There's a now retired poet on the Manchester circuit who tried to get in about five times I know on BGT, and I know he got twice they don't like poetry. Sorry to read this, Robert. I've had the chance to have you on Spoken Label (My Poetry Podcast) and you were really charming. It's their loss. That programme has a meanness to it that's never set well with me.

A great, angry beast of a poem, Joe. Apart from the pizzas, 'It was a convenient place to stay", his explanation for spending a week in Epstein's house in New York, is the phrase that sums him up.

Over the years I have come to discern the clamp down and the divesting of educators who now merely facilitate, lecture and barely teach. To educate is to prepare for life but most school systems mold a citizenry that is docile and impotent and servile. But that is just me. In the meanwhile we are all learning, less altruistic things. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks John! You know as a poet your work is never done! In fact during those times where others are at rest, your powers of observation really come into play!
The Queen is an interesting backdrop, a human soundtrack to all our lives as we go through good times and bad.

This certainly packs a punch and the timing is well chosen Joe. Even in its excoriating tone I think you are on safe ground, a well larded anti tribute to a figure whose tail should be well and truly between his legs, if nothing else.
A great read a roller coaster ride!

brilliant joe! so you won't be upset to have learned that prince paedo won't be showing his leering face hopefully him having contracted covid-apparently-or is that just an excuse for the rest of the royals to keep him at royal arms length?
a most detestable creepy person if ever there was one!
I wonder if he's ' recovering ' in his swiss chalet that WE bloody well bought for him-GRRRR!!!

Removed these two.
When pledging her time and support
she’s the Queen of clubs for charity
She’s the Queen of garden spades
when planting a commemorative tree
When meeting and greeting the public
she’s the Queen of hearts to the country
And the dazzling Queen of Diamonds
amongst all the pomp and pageantry

Sadly Nadia, I have already seen my 70th birthday but the one regret that I have is that I didn't chronicle my teenage years and beyond. Basically, the poetry that I write these days is a form of diary for my children to mull over when I'm toast!
Keep writing, anything and everything! Keep writing!

Wow Robert, what a brilliant description. As an ex-actor I relate to so much of what you've said, being manhandled in so many confidence-flattening, mind-bending ways. I salute you. I was in the profession for 12yrs Now I know why my self-belief still wobbles after so many decades. I was with Veronica & Robin Aaronson at the weekend and we ploughed through the programme hoping to see you. Know I know why we didn't. Thanks Rachael xxx
