This evoked many memories of youth spent in yet-to-be-grown American suburbs--places where no cars and no cops go.
Yet, I see now, the speckled landscapes that exist before me in older cities, and thus I see what will become of those, then, newly broken lands that existed in my youth.
It seems that all the land is doomed to domestication...

Hey, Colin..I do like to come at things from irregular angles when I see an opportunity, however I'm not sure my attention span is quite long enough for stealth without serious guidance and some fine tuning. Though, I was once told that I look like the cat that just nabbed the bird.
Hi, David..I wrestled somewhat with the title. Sometimes, aggression just feels like the only natural reaction--there are simply times when you don't want your intentions mistaken through the exchange of too many civilities, if you know what I mean. In my experience, motive really only comes to mind once the deed is done and you get the pleasure of rethinking it all and how it could've gone better. Anyhow...
And you, Ray..I really like the word "intent". Maybe that should be included in the title. Anyway, I think most of us (many of us..some of us..a few of us?) reach many points of no return--that place from which you can never go home. Otherwise, maybe we would revert repeatedly to situations and habits that spell trouble for us.
Thanks to each of you for your comments and for giving me this food for thought on an otherwise boring Friday evening.
elP x

There is a kind of assurance to your writing drawn from experience of the craft and this poem is a classic example that is like a journey from the general to the particular - you end up with knowing exactly what you are reading.
Thanks for putting this up David.

Refined and powerful, a definition of intent, and perhaps could be the point of no return - which on rare occasions we might experience.
Always a pleasure to read you elP.

For me, Paul, it is the 'intimacy' you evoke, with what you choose to talk about and how you choose to say it. Your words create atmosphere and deep feeling, a sense of real participation in your experience. Including the dog is icing on the cake - a superb choice to conclude the moment. I highly respect your work.

Probably with a steel wire mesh, eh Travis? My grandson did the same when 'privileged' to stay for a week in my house while his grand-dad and I were away. And it was a brand new pan - all scratched up like mice with long toenails had danced a fandango.

Hello elP, sorry for the delay in responding. I make it a rule never to suggest explicit alterations, or propose one word should replace another; it's a cardinal sin in my view. I might suggest however that you could lose 'does' from the first line (last verse). I think 'close' and 'claim' work well alliteratively. If you're happy with it then that's all that matters really. If, though, you feel inclined to tinker, come back to it periodically; i do this with mine and sometimes i surprise myself by spotting obvious options that had hitherto remained invisible.

'and her eyes were her scales' - perfect, Paul. My Nana was a cracking cook and had a pub in the 70s. I used to like washing up the customers' plates; unfortunately, never having seen a non-stick pan before, i gave that s good scrubbing too.

Colin, I am a rare pipe smoker, but ashtrays are not involved in that. Mainly I send smoke signals to my wife, (she loathes the smell). Talking of the art of stone ashtrays, I did have one in serpentine (from the Lizard in Cornwall, blue and veiny(like me). I knew a draughtsman once who had a piston ashtray made from a 600cc pot from a Panther single m'bike, that was a beaut. I love old artefacts and am an avid collector of bits and pieces. Thanks for the compliment, I try to present a variety as you know.
Thanks for your comment Paul, goodonya.
Thanks everyone for the likes too!

Hello Ebonaya,
This piece seems more fitting for the discussion forum section of this website. You posted this in the poetry blog section but it is not really a poem.
Moreover, I think that this piece is a little narrow minded. Yes, mainstream rap is infamous for promoting sexual vulgarity and violence.
However, there are many rappers that share their Christian world view through their craft. That means their lyrics are positive, free from vulgarity and promotion for drug abuse and violence. I could actually name more than a few and I shall below in the following format-
Label: rappers
Reach records: Lecrae, Andy Mineo, Tedashii, Kb
Humble Beast: Propaganda, Jackie Hill Perry, Braille, Sho Baraka
Capitol CMG: NF, Social Club Misfit Generation
Clear sight music: Flame, Mike Real
Collision Records: Alex Faith, Dre Murray
RMG: Derek Minor, Canon, B Cooper
GOM: Bizzle, Flo, Datin, Selah the corner
There are many more that I don't know their label or they might just be independent. Other include: Benjah, Aha Gazelle, Kaleb Mitchell, WxNDER Y, KJ-52, ect, ect...
That's a lot of rappers right there and if you look up some of them you will realize that there are many people tuning into their music because it is uplifting and still ''dope'' rap music.
I don't think that Poetry should be versus Rap. I get that you like poetry better and that's cool. I think Rap utilizes poetry as the lyrics over a great beat...the same way that rhetoric uses poetry when a poem is performed as spoken word.
Well, that was my two cents.

As everyone else has responded; the love shines brightly out of this beautiful tribute to a much-loved nan.
Of all the poems I've read today & yesterday (Oz time-differences) this one is by far and away, the most memorable demonstration of female nurturing and love I've read.
Very well done - I too stand and salute you, Paul.

you could display your whistles in them Ray ?
my old ashtray is knocking about in the garage somewhere but not as glamorous as your malachite and lapis lazuli ones - mine was fashioned from an old car piston.
it's ironic how such a grim pastime was afforded such luxury accessories and how such beautiful stones were turned into items to be stubbed on and piled with stinking ash and butts.
as always you fit so much into your poetry which makes it so pleasurable to read. As an afterthought, perhaps there are craftspeople somewhere who can repurpose these old ashtrays into something new and beautiful like jewellery.

Wonderfully evocative and a delight Paul. In expressing this bit of true domestic history, you have simultaneously kicked the whole bullshit contrivance of Celeb chefdom into touch, in my book. My mum had a Spong mincer with cutters and I used to wonder how the mince came out wriggling.
A very fine poem and a joy.

brilliant! - how much you want for these two lines guv?
haring back from Harrod's in a hackney cab
midnight chocolate cake fridge raids or bolognese in bed
My Nan smoked Piccadilly's but couldn't cook for toffees - unfortunately some days we had no choice when she came to look after us - her custard was either runny or lumpy or solid but never just right and her attempts remain family jokes to this day! Bless - you and her and your Nan too ? The world is richer!

Thanks Suki, how right you are about memories from childhood/early life. I became a bit teary-eyed today reminiscing about my nan, who I last saw just before my 7th birthday, but who gave me enough love to last a lifetime. Yes, very precious memories.
And how right you are about cooking being an act of love.
Thank you for posting such lovely comments Suki, they are absolutely spot-on ?
