Liked 'Breakfast Pots'. Humorous topped with a light sprinkling of pathos. But really.. it struck me as sad and doesn't it sum us all up!

There was a con artist from Senegal
He wasn't a poet at all
We got wise to his scam
And put up the spam
Don't try to con poets on WOL!

True poetry burns brightly in the heart of a guy who can lose a thousand quids worth of fish and write a funny poem about it...
You get my vote...cheers!

Everyone gives their time freely on here Steve - something to bear in mind when you're giving the site a bashing... though I know that you are tongue in cheek about most things.
Perhaps a mixed calendar would be a good idea for next year? Are you up for it Steve? Ann? Chris?
It is possible to do these things tastefully and have a laugh. I can remember having a photo taken topless when I was younger. You couldn't see anything cos I had a massive piece of water melon covering my melons. I could probably do it with a grapefruit nowadays...

Hi Ann
Thanks for commenting. It says "turning on"! The original was indeed, something along the lines of turn on, tune in, drop out but I couldn't get all that in. But as it is it does make sense, honest. x

Maybe we could try something similar here on WOL - for one day only (I suggest April 1st 2012) all the guys on here could swap their profile pics for a raunchy shot of them in the altogether. Howz about it guys? (Sadly I will be away that day so unable to log on and take a look - shame! :)

Agree with the sentiments Dave - nice poem. But wouldn't the hippies be tuning in rather than turning in - or were they tired hippies? (All that dope no doubt!)

There's nothing wrong with nudity, male or female. But the same standards should apply to exhibitionist displays by both genders. Of course, it is considered OK by the Liberal Fascist stablishment both to denigrade men generally and to treat them sex objects - but not to do that to women ... or one might lose one's Arts Council grant, darling.
By the way, this story has only just appeared on this increasingly slow (in news terms) and pompous ("swing those trousers, chaps, and let's do a workshop or go on a residential writing course") website. I read about this calender in a writers' magazine many weeks ago. Do keep up, WOL.

Fantasy made flesh?...we all have our dreams and this is pleasingly provocative in its imagery. I remember when I was no more than eight and enjoying lying naked in a stream one afternoon...and they say sex begins at puberty! My mother wasn't best pleased because
I lost a shoe and times were hard then!

Well spotted, Banksy. I try not to let too many past the blue pencil. But thanks for the kind comment that precedes your accuracy. J.C. spotted another failure but as he's not saying, neither am I. Art shouldn't be stifled by trivial things, that's what I say...:-)

Well I've no objections to a male calendar of this sort - particularly if each month has a snippet of poetry along with the naked male form. In fact the more I think about it, the more I love the idea.
You could mix serious poetry/photography along with humorous verse and cheeky shots to make it really quirky. I'm hoping you get a host of golden daffodils in there somewhere too...
If it's all for a good cause and the photogaphy is as tasteful as the one above, it can't be a bad thing.

Chris politics are a funny thing and I am glad that you have taken time to comment on our project - my Facebook request is a way to connect and just that - this project started as a fun and interesting way to create a saleable object that would raise as much money as possible to help our cause (JDRF) our 3yr old son was diagnosed last year with type 1 diabetes - I will be frank he nearly died.
We are creative people and we wanted to do something to raise money and awareness - this is our first answer to that, for us it is a life long challenge and we hope our son and the children of so many people can be helped by our contribution.
Now the politics - the men and women who are involved in this project are at the top of their creative powers - we have brought together a wide range of individuals who have contributed free of charge. And this kind of project is designed to create a raised eyebrow - it is also a very original piece of poetry publishing. Each photo has a poem attached - each pose was considered by the male poet being photographed and the female photographer in response to the poem contributed by a female poet on the subject of the male muse. It's been hard work - its more that just nude pictures and we have enjoyed the creative ideas and outcome that this project has produced - the politics of the nude (male or female) is being explored we don't answer it but rather turn over the stone and take a look - its what a curious mind does and we would love you to take a look at our website and newsletters http://wildwomenpress.com/Wild_Women_Press/Calendar_Project.html
Perhaps I can send you the newsletter links on Facebook ?
All the best Adam & Vik

I like the thinking Mark, it's very interesting; I like the duality that exists between the literal and the figure of speech. And I love the concept.
Well thought/written.
A somewhat similar idea was expressed in prose in the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
It's a brilliant novel (though it takes time to get into it).
I would recommend that novel to you on the basis of the thinking you exhibit.
My Best
Chris

Joking aside, let's not forget that such charity calendars are very popular these days - men and women - following in the footsteps of the WI Calendar Girls. It's news for us, ie Write Out Loud, simply because poets and poems are involved. Intriguing, in fact. And it's a good cause. I just haven't yet decided who's destined to receive it as a Christmas present from me.

The cause is clearly worthwhile, I'm just less sure of the politics here; side splitting though my humour factually must be. I take it all people find me hilarious? After all I can even commb my hair into a side parting- amazing funny :) Back to point; the intention here presumably is good, I would assume that by default.
But...
If this was a calendar of the female of the species, people would be up in arms with the idea of it somehow being somehow exploitative or at least somewhat cheap. Somehow we escape such labels as it is a male calender and of poets no less. People will be looking at a poets body; that makes it art y'know! Mmmmm I'm not sure about that logic. Still each to their own; maybe I am suffering from a subconscious envy to get my boys out and put tassels on them. Who could possible say? Beyond the humour I do have a point- oh er missus and that point is genuine.
I would prefer poets, male or female to be known for their words and what they say in terms of their art, rather than..Well rather than. If anyone wishes to see my saggy apples, I will be appearing in Jack and the beanstork at (this is a lie you can stop reading with my apology).
P.S
Not sure what to make of your facebook request Adam? I'm sure your a great bloke and all, but am somewhat worried that you may wish to bury my apples under your patio after skinning me.
My opinion is clearly just an opinion, i'm just someone who eats cheese and onion toasties who played manic miner in his youf.
Take care
Chris

I like it too. I love the
"bridges are only little darks"
line, and the ending particularly. And the way the two threads tie together. Sounds like the writer is more "with" the long gone tunnel builders than the child (?) he is accompanying. Made me think of times when you are with your children being all jolly when you have some big "grown up" problem taking over your mind. Been there!
