Clever people are also the most unhappy and loneliest people. Some of them know it, and some of them don't. I think that you portrayed this really well Cynthia, and snapped in the feelings of one-upmanship, whilst showing fragments of hidden feelings of loneliness. The cold calculation of the determined, clever mind, undermined by uncertainty and what I sense is fragility. Saying that,it could be post natal dimensia that is sensing this in your piece. 'to cut', 'to control', 'to expurgate'. Expurgate! What a great word, I peronally would not change that word Cynthia. And the 'continually', 'condecendingly', and 'completely', fit the rhyme and the tone perfectly. Haha, I remember where 'once upon a time, in a land far away....' I was classed as clever,it's called years 9, 10 & 11 now. I find that I no longer am - I cannot even work a smart phone! How many of us find that technology passes us by?Hope you are well cynthia, take care.xx

Really interesting, Cynthia. Reminded me of Lennon's "one thing you can't hide is when you're crippled inside". Some of the people with most humanity couldn't pass an exam to save their lives.

One of the frighterning things about the world is that clever people can be very stupid. The international recession was caused by clever people.

Great images in this. It brings back some strong memories for me. Blackberry picking as a child and my wife covering the kitchen in damson jam.
Congratulations by the way on your success at the Tudor House, particularly as the competition was so good.

This seems like a bit of a departure for you Andy. At times it feels a bit prosy but maybe that's because there is an intention to set it to music that I can't hear. The repetition that Lynn points out might support that. It would be interesting to hear it. x

The Queen represents outdated traditions mostly, it also alludes to the Queen is dead just as a really economical way of getting the feeling of "life is very long when you're lonely" across.
This last is intended to give the perspective of the viewpoint character (narrator) from the poem as a person who really feels they are outside of it all and wanting to stay that way in a jaded acceptance that most people are very conservative and set in their ways.

Can't agree with you there Larisa. History shows that there are plenty clever people capable of lies and atrocities - lots of pies spoiled by flies, to use your analogy. Perhaps it all hangs round our understanding of the word 'clever' - it may mean different things to different people. It is tempting to think people are clever who think the same way we do...

Clever people can be kind,
clever people can be wise,
clever people can't be blind,
clever people hate the lies.
The one who is clever tries
to get rid of the flies
which spoil the pies.

I love the way your poetry provokes thought Cynthia. As ever, I get waylaid from thinking about poetic style and critique and diverted into the message you are putting across. It seems to skew reality. Yes clever people can be lots of things - kind, insightful and humorous as well as the negatives you have chosen to highlight. I guess clever people are more successful at whatever facet of their personality they wish to vent be it good or bad - their intelligence perhaps guarantees this. I would say that there are lots of unintelligent people who demonstrate the same flaws - they are more obviously flaws though cos they are less skilfully hidden. Just me thinking out loud...

You are very hard on yourself. And who is to say a fight is 'meaningless'? It has to have purpose for someone or it wouldn't happen. To say any conflict is meaningless, even as a participant, is just an opinion and can rightly be challenged.

This is excellent, Eli, a heart and a mind toucher. It shows intuitive awareness of the world around us, imagination, and deep thought. I think you are a natural philosopher, with the gift of searching for, and using skillfully, the exact words you want to express your ideas clearly. I truly think you have 'the gift'. Also, I do like the photo of the passion flower. Is it meant to be symbolic in a particular way known to you from your upbringing?

Hi Lynn, nice enjoyable idea but you need the last line to rhyme with a bit of punch here as the rest of the poem does - something like 'and I've got nothing in the bank!' which would fit with the last wish, see what you think Jeff X

I too saw many horrendous sights going up those bus steps - obese 60+ yr olds in sussies is enough to put you off for life - well, nearly. PS did you listen to the vid ? - it's worth it :)

Thank you so so much for your kind comments on my Field Boundaries poem. It is the first one I've really put concentrated effort into, having just been on an Arvon poetry course. I had found it a bit disconcerting, having to cut and chip and edit away, wondering if I'd lose whatever it is that I sometimes get into my poetry. Your comment made me feel that it is worth trying harder and thinking more. Thank you so much. xx
