Hi Debz - there is a depth to your work that insists that a reader must spend time pondering its content for disguised themes and allusion which I always enjoy.

The language used here feels soft and appropriate - which I suspect is no coincidence.

I enjoyed reading this.

Thanks for comments on mine.
I like the first verse and I also like the line "Mermaids Weep."
Liked it all really.

I feel I ought to warn you Ann – there are plenty of unobtainable, cerebral brain-boxes on here (some even with big cars, romantic natures and an ideal or two) who already feel they’re pretty damn perfuck ... I mean perfick .... without you telling them so ... this’ll go straight to their pretty little white-haired heads, I tell ya!

I think Stef that you are mixing up John Thaw with Morse - oh no - hang on a tick - I guess they are BOTH dead. Doh! But as a fictional character he won't ever die. And as a fantasy he won't ever die either. Just off to collect a few bin bags full of horsehair - lots of horses round here! (Soon to be bald!;-))
And thank you Isobel too.

Hi Josh - if people think you're 'really sarcastic' then you're well on your way to becoming a writer of considerable worth.

There is a WOL at Bolton as Win has rightly stated - it was where I first ventured into the world of performance poetry before I was covered in meaningless accolades and non-existant awards. It's an ideal night on which to cut your (first?) teeth. Fill ya' boots and enjoy WOL to its full potential.

Glad to have inspired someone... well I would have to love this one now, wouldn't I? Luckily enough I do - for its playfulness, yet serious undertones.
I liked the sweet shyness about Morse also - used to love that programme...

Woops = just realised that I posted this on Banksy's profile - meant to post it on yours :)

Butting in on a private conversation here - hope that's ok. I think, for women in particular, we're led to believe that there is a 'someone' out there who is the 'right one', and all we've got to do is find him, prove that the glass slipper fits, and then hang on like grim death.
There's no 'right one', there's merely a choice of compromises to be made.
One of my favourite authors - Ann Tyler wrote in her novel 'A Patchwork Planet' (and I'm para-phrasing) ... after so many years to-gether, the other person sort of becomes the right person.

Hi - do you want another 2 cents??
most of what you say I agree with -I was in the same position that all the "sane" girls are already married etc. But if you perceive yourself as a Strong woman, dont you think that that can easily come across as "bolshie" & put off the "nice guys"? You've set yourself a prettty tall bar there -you're looking for "very special" -aren't we all? I'd be tempted to go for someone you fancy who treats you right & work on the rest later, as most women can twist their man round their little finger anyway & mould them to their needs (me included). sorry if it sounds like a lecture, but I'm just talking sincerely from my own experiences. Fantastic imagery - particularly like the first verse. The only lines I'm not quite sure about are the last on the second and on the final verses- the scan seems wrong to me; too short in the second, too long in the last.
But very interesting poem, I like it very much.

my problem is that sometimes I make what are (to me) obvious jokes & people think I'm being serious ! It's the same with those defences of yours (and a lot of girls are the same BTW) - if you come across too "hard" you might put off the guys you want to reach & only the cocky idiots have a thick enough skin to take your banter - and they might not be what you're looking for. Only my 2 cents - it's not gospel, just my opinion as having "been there" myself quite a bit.

I really ehjoyed this poem Josh. I've never thought before about how it would feel to be the youngest child left at home when the older one goes off having adventures. (God, that sounds like an Enid Blyton story - if you've ever heard of her! but hopefully you know what I mean!) I'm an only child myself.

well it was interesting to think of important people but to only give five words to each?? mine just didnt make any sense andd was disjointed. i think its a good way to come up with choice phrases to use elsewhere.

Yawn was my English A level teacher. She used to dictate her university notes to us for the whole duration of the lesson. It was mind numbingly boring.
Laugh - my French teacher, who was a laugh a minute - made french literature come alive - he was also fit in a craggy, raggy sort of way. I ended up studying French - which was a grave mistake cos I always hated the language and grammar side. I will always regret not studying English Literature.
On the whole, I think the people who influence us most in life are teachers and parents. Thereafter come good or bad experiences but essentially we are formed by our early role models.

For anyone who's interested:

Cope - my mum - 6 kids and a paralysed husband - you have to take your hat off to her.
Share - siblings
Understand - siblings
Sing - Shirley Bassey - my childhood idol - remember seeing her in Bolton.
Cry - 1 adult, 1 child who died young
Hope - those same two
Loathe - My one bad relationship
Regret - A fictitious character - but it could be every person you find attractive that isn't available. x
