Thanks Jason. Watch Straw Dogs to see one in action, pretty fearsome. They're outlawed these days but they do crop up, I spy 500 points at least.
That's a really fine like David thanks. The line I stumbled on , a sort of twist of early retirement ! Perversion of phrases often works for me. Glad it worked for you.
Mindy thanks for stopping and reading. You did well picking up that aspect, and I would think the landed classes were pretty hardy and used to dispatching animals , even embraced it (they might do again if given the chance).
Laura, what can I say ? A very useful exchange- thanks for that!
Thank you Eve, Lisa and Devon for liking this.

Wanting to prove I do "show up:" "It" is the caring/love/affection "she" used to feel and proclaim.
It's a marvelously original way to ponder an ages-old and anciently painful question.

For me this could be about me and one of my friends, in the old days. We haven't parted our friendship but we don't go torching the world anymore either. But could equally refer to an ex girlfriend. Great poem.

Ok, I will admit I didn't see the news report and actually, now I've seen it and realise that they're actually talking about kids, I take back the comment about natural selection. Kids are kids, not yet fully formed and educated adults, so that was a bit harsh.
But seriously, are we getting to the stage as a species where we have to put traffic lights on the ground to stop people being run over because they can't tear their eyes away from a screen as they walk?
I fear for our future, I really do.

Hi Mindy! Thank you for taking the time to read! You are correct! I love the way you put it, too! It's exactly that. The way I see it it's a plea... and it's answered, if it can be answered at all, by the same person who's pleaing! Painful and hopeful at the same time, as you said. In Greece we have a whole bunch of words that mean "two opposite things happening at the same time" like "bittersweet". In English that's the only one I know of... In Greek we have a word for that mixed feeling of sorrow and joy which I assume it's a universal thing and not just Greek ?. We also have a word for that thing you sometimes get when you start laughing amidst an intense crying session and/or vice verca which I'm REALLY hoping is a universal thing and not just Greek and so on! If I had to use one word for what you called painful but hopeful I'd say it would go along the lines of "hopainful"!
Thank you Mindy ?
Mae

This is a poem that cherishes the small truths behind civility. And to do that, it had to see them. So bravo for that benevolent eye, and for sharing the view with us!

I most like the idea of the mirror's heart breaking.
The poem's final moment seems to be you coming back to yourself, with feisty resolve and acceptance of whatever grit the truth has gotten coated in this time.
You tease honesty out of hiding. It seems simple when It's all been laid out, but it wasn't simple getting there, which truth you portray in your formatting, if I'm not mistaken.
A poem both painful and hopeful.

Anything less than that, would be high treason. Sometimes, the hardest thing in the world is to see that face for what it really is and accept that, and sometimes the hardest thing in the world is to trust what it tells you, but see, hear and trust you must.
Made me think, a lot.

I think your title is a a perfect one Peter. The worried convolutions of your thoughts are like the pages of some weighty book of knowledge, or rather lack of it, indicating an ever enquiring mind. As always some cracking lines to ponder over, and it is never an easy ride, but you do this so well.
