Just stumbled across this in a hive of your activity whilst I see whats been happening on our own Stockport site!!

Some fantastic imagery & wonderful lines. And wrapped at the end with an appropriate echo of the beginning.

Best wishes

Thanks to Anya for liking and to Keith, Dorothy and Kate for commenting. I am glad this has touched you guys. This is about my old home town of Brighton, which is on the south coast of England. I go back there from time to time if only briefly to view both the sameness and the differences that have occurred over the year. Glad you likes it.

Thanks again
Martin

Please go to see this if you can. I saw the show in Preston recently...

Two Little Ducks - Matt Abbott, Preston 13/2/19

Preston was alive with police horses, TAU vehicles and in the pall of a late winter evening when I arrived. My first sight was of a young man, down on his luck, being arrested, apparently for having a drink in the street.

“When she’s alone she feels horny
When they have sex she wants to cry”

Matt Abbott comes alive on stage. In person is shy and self-effacing. As a writer and performer he is anything but.

Two little ducks starts with a poem apparently lauding the virtues of Brexit. I don’t think the B word is mentioned throughout the show but it is a perceptive, thoughtful exposition of what happened in 2016 and beyond.

Matt does things that others may not be bothered with. Spending time in the jungle at Calais. Talking, living and taking in the lives of marginalised people. Refugees. People in desperate need. People who we should all identify with. He does.

Taking the stark truth of the death of deep seam mining and how it affected his own family history and his destiny as a writer and performer strikes the most human of chords. It works.

After the performance the audience gathered around him for questions. I didn’t hear most of his responses but all were in thrall.

Great night, great show.

I think Matt is doing more. Check his website and twitter feed for details.

I started this with a quote from Matt’s poem ‘Echoes from the bottom of a well’

Two little ducks. Not always comfortable. rarely nice, but quacking great. See it when you can.

Great sample, really captures the moment. Favourite line: "Backdropped by a fading reddened sky." Really like your writing style so please be sure to write some more.

Thanks,

J.

I agree with Keith, the victims will never escape from their private prison.

I love the way this poem can be read to the 'tune' of the 'Pater Noster'
I much prefer your version.

Don,

Well said especially the last two lines. They used their robes and power as camouflage for heinous crimes. They will now pay the price but sadly the victims are those who bear the scars.

Thank you for this

A poem rich in nostalgia with affection for the past and the memories it contains. I had a similar experience over fifty years ago when I left home to join the Forces. I do remember the knotted handkerchiefs.

It takes a lot of bravery
To come out on the screen
Expose our inner selves to all
Those we've never seen

It's called help by catharsis
We need it, you and me
We all need showing bravery
It is ones therapy

Reminds me a little of the Limerick that doesn't work,

There was a young man from Tralee,
Who was stung on the leg by a wasp,
When asked if it hurt,
He said, "Not at all,"
"It can do it again if it likes."
