Thanks Keith, Don and Brian and Anya for adding your hopes and thoughts to this.

David, of course nothing like this declaration could hold water for reasons of human nature itself and its ramifications. Opposites must always be inherent, otherwise there would indeed be no progress nor progression. It intrigues me that Utopia has a strong allure - I suppose art gives that a body in itself, and I suppose religious conviction too. We can all make our own kind of peace with the world, but millennia will pass or a world cataclysm before any real improvement can come. Sounds pessimistic.

Graham, there obviously is some tribal behaviour in herds or group thinking patterns, but I was certainly not likening the spirit in the poem to any flashback to instinctive behaviour, in fact the opposite: a suspension of it. I feel your view may be rather simplistic in the light of what is socially observable, though I admit your assessment does describe the sort of Victorian conception that we inherited in this country in 19th c. with respect. Thanks for your observations!

Finally, I will say that the Super Hero does not appear in this particular fantasy, perhaps we the readers might be playing the role.

Beno, Jon, Darren and Kate lovely to get your likes! Nice to see you online again Beno.

Many thanks all. Ray

Jennifer,

Thank you for this comment. You are right in your assessment that values have vanished and that nothing has replaced religion but the Insitution of the Church itself must accept some responsibility for what has happened. Dare I use the expression.....we need to get back to basics, as that is the only way for some guidance and direction to point the way forward.

All out of shape from toe to top;

The base-born products of base beds.

Is true that sometimes you are shown kindness when you least expect it. (Also the opposite!) I have broken my arm, and have it in a large plaster cast. Everone now stops on pedestrian crossings!!!!! Unheard of here, where you have to really watch out for people phoning or texting or using internet etc. The only other time I have noticed this was when pushing a pram! Loved it.

The Madeira in question is of course cake. (Last verse). I’m sure I would have been hauled before the PC police if it had been wine. It’s where that Weinstein fella went wrong.

Paradise!! No Tv blaring away -perhaps a good book to hand? My ideal in summer is a comfortable seat in the shade, with a book and a dog, in winter just as you describe it! Grape juice with both, red in winter and chilled sparkling white in summer! Loved it!

Beautiful words, and sadly so true. Religion did give us ethics by which to regulate our lives, more or less strictly according to how committed we were. Now it seems that these ethics have vanished, and the general attitude is 'I want it all . I want it now'. N othing has appeared to replace religion.

It's interesting when I reflect back on writing this. At the time I seemed to think doom and gloom was getting the comments and laughter wasn't. I wanted to bring brightness to the site.

OK, comments are nice but let's face it we basically write for ourselves. But now we have the internal tug-of-war. Cathartic verses the need to be recognised and appreciated.

I'm a Spike Milligan type character. We both went to the same School of Silliness...oh, I've told you this already. Poor Spike - "I told you I was ill" - they thought it was a joke - he then up and died ?

It's Gina here John, Tina's sis
I've got luscious luvvlies you'd like
But invite me for madeira by your bedside
I'd have to say get on yer bike

You can't pull the Flanders and Swann trick
It might work with your ladies and thee
But Gina and Tina they are virgins
And want to keep virginity

Now this will be a shock to Brian's system
He didn't know Tina was pure
She never gave in to madeira
'Cause Keith tightly reined her for sure ?

Ha Don. You made me giggle. I can only write about what I'm dwelling on in the moment and don't stop to think how it will be received. Something goes on a loop in my brain and it won't stop until it comes out. It's interesting to have comments but irrelevant for me as the act of penning is cathartic. That said, thank God I have a day job though.... ?
