I love this and I dislike it too. There is such a weight of sentiment in the words but it feels so thinly woven. Did you mean this?
I loved what you were doing and the leanness of some of the narrative "At dawn I swam" but I so wanted more. You tease us all Ann, you're too secretive. how you've improved!

Hi Dave - thanks for reading and commenting on "Fences". I'm so glad you picked up on the awkwardness I was trying to portray with the structure. Much appreciated!

Thank you for taking the time to read and review "Fences".
It is a relationship that ultimately is not meant to be, even though there's love between them. Maybe you have to experience it to make sense of it. There are some obstacles that just can't be overcome - like if one wants children and the other doesn't. Hiding in denial, and being afraid that communicating will bring about the end of the relationship so they avoid comunication, are what the fences are made of...denial and fear.
I appreciate that you consider it well-written.
Thanks again,
Lisa

Love the way you've captured this dull no-mans-land period of time. I keep coming back to the phrase about the horses heads - never thought of it that way. I like that, hearing something described in a really new way.
"Long heads reaching outwards
Like something lost at sea."
And the last line, loaded with tension.

Twas' another good night at the Ring'o Bells. It gets bigger and better. A cerebral massage for the hard of rhyming. Still a new comer to the open mic scene I am thoroughly enjoying the experience and have met new and interesting like minded folk. Always look forward to the next one. Thanks everybody!!! Cheers. - 'Economics are arithmetical': (1+1 = 2)and unless we assume (dialectically ) that all statements are subject to inference ('it depends upon the context of the sayer and the listener and a myriad of other influential factors) then we can rely upon Formal Logic to serve us in this instance. My remark is that Politics IS the philosophical 'duster' that smears the very real truth of events - HISTORICAL happenings- and not the interpretation of those events. If I take an egg and crush it in my hand- it is an event- indisputable- and only becomes a matter for 'dispute' when a sentient being 'intervenes'. When a star explodes in a far off galaxy it happened whether a human is aware of the fact or not- it happens regardless of our witnessing it. Historians (not historical events) are - as you say 'want to be subjective'- and use 'politics' to rearrange the objective reality of an action.
The foto is one I have used recently with such 'Rene Magritte' abandon on Facebook with 'I see no apple; I see no plate.' and various plays upon the phrase.
We should correspond more.

Hello Cynthia
"Lights" in this context = lungs, part of the offal or "umbles" of the deer that the ordinary proles ate while the hobnobs got to eat venison.
Thanks for your comments. The poem was inspired by having just spent three weeks on the Isle of Arran with more neolithic monuments than you could shake a stick at, and of course strong Viking connections (King Haakon quartered his fleet in Lamlash Bay in 1264 prior to the battle of Largs) While we were there, we lost the dog (she turned up again) and spent a lot of time round the camp fire (but not eating chunks of dead animals) and I guess it all came out in the wash...

But Math can be manipulated to suit the scheme. And History will always be challenged because even current reports are biassed by opposing sides, and interfering analysts. So-called facts - time, place and antagonists - are often skewed unintentionally, or purposefully.
Good theme. I miss the inference of the apple in the bowl, maybe red on white too.

Hi Cynthia, Re; Colours, strangely enough I found some of the conclusions reached in that programme iffy to say the least.
It's a shame that nobody else commented on your poem I would have liked to see the discussion widened.

I really enjoyed this. The mood is true right through, filled with provocative detail that creates the developing scene and dynamic energy of the men. What are the deer's 'lights'. Eyes, maybe? Photo is very humourous.

Since you asked I am suggesting 'or a lost female seeking a truer path', although I have no quibbles with what you have already written.
This is a lovely poem where,'spellbound by humanity, and centuries of Christ.Yet secrets hide behind huge doors....' has imagination running riot.

Hi Andy, minds that think alike eh? Yes Autumn will soon be here and unpicked blackberries will freeze on bramble bushes once again.
Hints of melancholia in your poem to get us in the mood although I didn't find summer too bad this year which is good for me because I can't handle too much heat these days.
Nice one.

Hi Cynthia, this is quite an essay on colours were you motivated to write this in the light of a recent TV programme which focused on the topic?
Language was found to be an interesting starting point remembering that some tongues failed to identify certain colours though others could.
I seem to remember when studying aspects of colour in yesteryear that some African tribes had over a dozen descriptive words for different shades of brown.
Your poem certainly left few stones unturned. Well done.
