I liked this being immediately hooked on 'The frost is caught in cob webs' which is one of my favourite scenes. I thought the rest read well also.

I agree with Steve - a mind-stretching poem so different from the norm of things and having the head turning this way and that to catch up. 'curtains whip pane-less frames' eh? Clever.

Excellent evocation.
it`s only me, but I think it would have been perfect if, `This year of death` would have read `The death of the year`
...Nice poem.

Lol, John.
It was written with a younger couple in mind, to be honest.
Not that I've stopped dreaming yet, looks like I may be growing old disgracefully!

Lovely poem, and I wish you both a happy anniversary too!
(Thomas - re the bastard dog comment, I expect Judy had just written John a poem called "And I hate Your Effin' Cat!")
PS - She looks much too nice to write that though, I hasten to add!

Hi Cynthia, Re; NON-PAYING PASSENGER. Thank you for commenting and I tweaked the final line as you suggested.
The first line 'Dopey as ...' was simply an expression I often use to describe daft things and had no bearing whatsoever on any particular sexual act. Of course one has to be guarded in this day and age.

great poem, beautifully expressed and truth of the importance of friendship x
makes me think of the kahlil gibran idea that i often criticise in my poetry. That of joy being sorrow unmasked. the idea that the deeper sorrow can bury in to your heart, then the more love it can contain. i get angry with this idea sometimes, but only cos i know its true and it 'oftentimes' fills me with peace.
I think it relates here as friendship/love has its opposite, which fight against each other, as in all love/hate throughout everything all time. Your poem speaks of the natural fight between defence and trust. I like the reference to birth with the friendship as a new beginning/state of being.
its all in the yin yang, man ;)
'your love for you will rise and walk with ours' x

I think you could go into business writing poems for frustrated boyfriends with lover's balls to recite to their girlfriends - I'm sure they'd work better than a bunch of flowers.

Thanks Graham - re the weight of sentiment - I just don't want to go for the jugular where the sentiment is concerned. I don't want to be self-pitying. And also time moves on. But being back in a place that meant a lot, well, I HAD to write something didn't I? I was very interested in your comment by the way.

Yolande...this is really great. Superb rhythm, great rhymes. I can already 'hear' it as a performance piece. I can identify with parts of it only too well! Makes me think of Victoria Wood, or even some Monty Python. That's meant as mega compliments.
Would love to see/hear you perform it!

Hi John, Thanks for your comments on "Rear gunner" and the "Liver birds."
They say of the Liver birds that: The one facing west is looking out for homecoming seafarers; and the other one faces east to see if the pubs are open. I am inclined to differ; I think it's because they're just not speaking. (One's an Evertonian.)
P.S. "The ghost of white hart lane." gets exorcised next Monday.
