"long even before knitting." What a wonderful phrase! Haha! ;-) And a nice idea too - and who's to say it isn't true?

I should have added that, like Ray, there are aspects to the poem that I really like - particularly the double entendre at the end. x

Mmmm. Intriguing - there do seem to be two women here - the wife (arriving home) and the other woman (leaving), but who knows.

I like to think that I get most of your poetry Cynthia but I would have to agree that this one is a perplexing one. I think it is possibly because 'she' may refer to more than one person and it isn't easy to understand which is which or just who the narrator is.
I'm presuming this about someone caught en flagrant delit but it needs a little bit more clarification.

Hi Cyn - you're always leaving nice comments for me & consequently I always read yours, hoping to find one I can understand - & yet again, it eludes me - as if we are talking a different language. Am I just being thick or are there references here that I might need to be au fait with (eg tennis ??) in order to make sense ?
Or are your poems maybe just too "clever" or knowing for me ?
I'd like to get it - but I honestly cant understand. What do you reckon pls ? XX

Wow! Thanks,Cynthia. I should retire right now, I think! It won't get any better! On another site I was told this was prose not poetry, and though I take the point, I'll go with your view.

Wow Bernadette, three grandsons and another on the way! My daughter was like that, having three girls in a row, but now she has evened it up a bit with two boys. We thought she'd finished after the first boy, but no...! They are all marvellous though of course, and we have 6 grandkids altogether, our other daughter has just one girl.

Hello Cynthia. Bit Agatha Christie, I thought, though I got confused by the narrative in 2nd and 3rd verses but get the general drift."fine rich legs" is a bit underwhelming. I think "watch his mind compute on the screen of his face" might go better for rhythm?
"A guilt return with a backhand curve" is clever, as is the following line, and gives solidity to the characters. The ending is nice too, though "Men who naked leap about" is an odd construction.

Hello Greg. I wouldn't have grasped the dream connection either.Maybe if the punctuation were less tight that aspect would be more apparent.I liked 3rd verse best, discarded and starfish are lovely rhymes and beached in a heap is good. The least effective part, for me, is "immersion, hope, exhilaration, surprise" and then joy in the next line -too many abstract nouns.

Hi Lynn - well now there's a thought - I guess it was evident that I was really meaning the poem wasn't overly long in my view as Cynthia had first indicated. However if you are up for collaborative efforts I can be swayed that way :) Can this be in a couple of days or so? We have a funeral to attend tomorrow so family and friends are arriving from all corners, but I should be clear by Friday. Best wishes, Dave

If that course said ALL poetry has to be simple and direct, the 'tutors' are overstating. The clear point is: 'not needed for what you want to say'. You must have some idea of your own intent and not anybody else's. And never worry about the reader. If you connect to your honest self, and write that which inspires you, the 'audience' will know, and follow you. There is 'poetry' wisdom in the advice given, but use it as a guide only, not as a harness checking your personal creativity.

Is this Majesty Accident another name for Pure Chance? If so, it is a good synonym. I enjoy the idea: Nothing is chance - a concept to think about. As is this philosophy, equally intriguing - Everything is chance.

Through the spins and twists of irony and sarcasm this poem really works: fast-paced lines, sharply-observant situations, clever diction with supportive allusions, cuttingly funny scenarios, and packing a wallop with a true social commentary. The title is superb.
Comment is about Concrete Thinking (blog)
Hi Greg - yes, it was Daljit Nagra and another poet called Frances Leviston, both were wonderful tutors who gave their time really generously. But . . . I now find I can't write! And I know that if I work on my poems and make them more minimal and less wordy, no one on here will like them! May not be around so much on here in future, til I've sorted the conundrum out! xx

Hi Ann. Was your poetic guide Daljit Nagra, who wrote Look! We are Coming to Dover? I'm a great admirer. Or have I got the wrong end of the stick yet again, and it was a different Daljit? Sounds like a good course, anyway

Thanks for your comments on my poems - you are such a great supporter and reader of poetry on here - WOL is lucky to have you. Both the poems were fast writes - I have to be feeling angry or miserable to write like that so thankfully, I don't do many. Normally I agonise over poetry and there is tons of stuff I don't post. Good to see you at Salford - hope to have more time to chat next time - there's always too much poetry at these things LOL x

Hi - I just could not find any poems in the others - they were still almost unbelievable for me & I wrote at the time, of one of them, that it actually seemed to be more real than real life & that one is really capable of logical thought processes within a dream - just like in real life, only here you can do whatever you like. That was the tragedy of this dream - that I could have asked any question & been given the answer (hence the title) but I couldn't think of a single thing to ask - what a waste. all the best. B
