Thank you Mae for being kind and writing on my profile. Yes we both have suffered life threatening illnesses (myself twice, cancer and sepsis) but we are both still here. Hurrah for us!! I like your poems. You have your own style - pushing at the margins of meaning and encouraging your reader to think about the connotations of words and to read between the lines. I will come back to your poems.

Take care and keep writing - John

Thank you all for commenting so kindly upon my poem 'Just deserts'and you twice Lisa.
!! And you Phil - I am so sincerely sorry for your loss. We lost our infant son to Meningitis in 1989 and a day doesnt go by without me thinking of him. He'd have been 30 this year. As Philip Larkin so memorably said in his poem, 'The Mower': "we should be kind / While there is still time."
All good wishes
John

To be homeless is like being without a life- nowhere to go where you have a right to be, and without a domicile you can't get any kind of job , so you are trapped. Agree with Hannah about Dickens's disapproval. I lived in London in the late 50s - early 60s and there weren't many homeless, on the streets anyway. Great writing.

How do you do it, each time they are funnier! Don't know how I missed this one - probably 'cos of all the Xmas hassle, although I like Xmas, as long as one keeps it down to a family holiday. (I have a fairly small family, so perhaps that helps keep the peace), Have a friend whose ma in law has had four false deathbeds, with kith and kin around her - just likes the attention I would think. When she really does croak, probably no-one will believe it.

Lovely yet again. We used to play that ancient trick of a banknote tied to a piece of fishing-line, and hide round the corner to jerk it away when they bent down. One old geezer fell over in fright and broke something so we were forbidden to do it ever again.
Keep up the good work! Jennifer

Hilarious, (as usual) loved Robson to rhyme with knobs on!
Presumably he just swanned peacefully away! Still chuckling over it.

John I lost my eighteen year old son to cancer three years ago, what shines and always will is the courage and ability to go face to face with this blight.
Your poem is an inspiration. As are all the fighters as I can see you know. Thank you for sharing this.

Hi Lysa
Your comments on Confused - Definition is most welcome.
The poem is a collection of words and thoughts from myself, my elderly Father in Law, and my late Father.
When I wrote it, I wondered if some readers may take offence, and I'm the last person to intentionally offend. But as a person of age, gender etc I am seeing the massive shifts in society coming around quicker and quicker.
Again, many thanks for the time to taken to drop a note.
Steve

Thank you Lisa. You have a good heart. It was not easily written but I thought it might encourage another person to fight against the ravages of illness and disease and also against medical prophets of doom I was told by 'an eminent surgeon' that I had three years to live in 2006. But I'm still here. So there is always hope.
We look before and after,
And pine for what is not;
Our sincerest laughter
With some pain is fraught;
Our sweetest songs are those that tell
Of saddest thought.
Percy Bysshe Shelley

the recent weather we have experienced always puts me in mind of tramping across fields. It is one of the few aspects of winter I still enjoy. Particularly feeling warm at the end of the day and watching the flames in the solid fuel burner we used to have. Cheers Guys.
Hope I might bump into you sometime this Year Stu.

Your word's have brought me to tears, not because of your struggles. Simply because your strength is to be truly admired and appreciated for all that you are. Your words are encouraging and soft, your pain is felt and I would like to say how sorry I am for all that you have been threw. You're a strong man full of love and idea's, nothing has defeated you yet because you still write with such passion, well done ..
I loved reading this piece ??

Your sample poem dedicated to your wife's mum really affected me. I could feel tears welling up at all that you didn't say. You demand that your reader reads between the lines which is, in my opinion, the essental step to developing an authentic voice of your own. You have talent Jason. Use it. All good wishes, John E

This seems a likely submission for the proposed Iron Press
anthology about trees - see WOL News for details. There's
something profoundly sad about a dying or dead tree...In my
distant Devon childhood there was one such noble landmark
beside which was placed a bus stop because everyone knew
the location as "Big Tree". When it became beyond saving it
was transformed into a timber sculpture that stands as a reminder
of what it once was - with some imaginative carvings
decorating its very substantial remains..

That is so truthful and never forgotten. The day my dad passed was the day I sat in the middle of both sides of each realm. I believe it takes a great loss to see the universe for all it is and all it has always been. Our eyes only see whats in front but the gift we all have shows more then our physical eye's could ever dream of witnessing. It was a powerful awakening, once you see and feel it can never be undone. I love what you do, you do it very well, coincidences do not happen , I believe your first tarot post was supposed to happen and it was much needed, for that I thank you and thank the universe yet again, love and light to you x
