Hi Don,
I think controversy will always upset someone's feelings. Can't be helped.

Congrats, Dave, on having your unpretentious, uncliched, unfashionable, carefully crafted, sharply observed poem about modern-day Grimsby singled out! Nice ending!

This poem is based on the last poem I posted. David’s comment about a quiet man in his local boozer who rarely spoke caught my imagination, so l rewrote the poem. So thanks David, hope it works. Thanks for the like Dolly.

Having read your extensive comments and your excellent poem I would just like to say that there is still a breath of fresh air coming in, to put things into perspective . Also, regarding your experiences, these I too believe are often key to a convincing and engaging poem in one's own case. Some are "fortunate" in this respect in having such an "interesting" life to share even if that is one where they have come off badly. It's great to see anything from you on WOL!
All the best Ray .

Your enthusiasm is, I hope, infectious. Try not to worry about your dyslexia. The English spelling system makes no sense and a few different spellings does not impede communication. Your meaning is clear. Good luck with your writing!

Thank you for these words. You are right as inspiration is often borne out of dullness, strife or even anxiety. But O how I long for Spring and Summer.

Thanks Po, John, Alan and M.C. and everyone who pressed like.
I got the idea for this one from a kid when I was at school. He found a fiver, and spent 4hours licking the ice to get it out.
I can remember superglueing 10pences to the pavement (not as flash as pounds) and watching the fun.
Cheers Kevin

Only thing for certain is the charm and appeal it exudes.

I take on board what you say in your Q and A section David, particularly with regard to clichés something I am always aware I can so easily slip into. I am not really sure what is fashionable at any given time, but that probably says as much about me being generally unaware. Some good points well made here.
A great poem with a real sense of the times in which we live.
Love it

Much to agree with in these pleasingly constructed lines. - but I find solace in the way a dull day helps to liven up the mind.
I like to linger in my bed
And let the thoughts inside my head
Assume their place before the day
Sees me emerge to have my say
On page, on tape and online as well
Like some ongoing magic spell -
The inward eye brings forth the sight
Of what the mind saw in dull day's light.

Thanks, Brian. I recall one evening out cycling...crossing the Thames
in West London when the Concorde flew overhead like a great white
arrowhead...a marvellous thing to behold. If it wasn't for those
careless French airport maintenance staff leaving debris on a Paris
runway, it is likely that its impressive life would have been greatly extended, even though it's now said it was economically unrealistic
to keep in the air. But there WERE rich names keen to get
involved: Branson for one, if my memory serves me correctly.

Good atmospheric evocation of a believable scenario. On another
tack, I'm reminded of the prevalence of female names in book lists
and publishing concerns these days.

Good fun - with more than a slice of truth! In my lifetime I've seen
the incumbents - led by those on government benches - place their
allegiance to "party" and other interests before that of the electorate.who invested them with power to govern the country..and it continues to this day.

A thought provoking piece Jon. Made me feel uncomfortable and ashamed of the inhumanity of mankind which is rampant. Our lack of action is appalling, but of course we cannot change anything if we do not unite, we are so helpless. So small and insignificant as individuals. X
