cheers Laura
please that you liked 'the Jesus Gene' and 'Daniel...' two very different emotions - although both query the existence of 'god' I suppose :-(
thanks for commenting - much appreciated

Who does this cheeky fracker think he`s fracking-well talking about? Let him frack off and frack in his own fracking back-yard.
(Mind, thinking about all that money floating about in those fracking frack-wells in America I`m not so fracking sure)
I feel better already.

Magnificent stabs at the accents, John, with your geography almost matching Lord Howell's on occasions. Apparently, he meant the north-west was desolate, not the north-east. I tell you, I've felt desolate in Guildford at times. (I have, of course, shared this on Facebook. More people need to know of your talents!)

thanks for the comments on 'Daniel....' Isobel.
Yes - a very disturbing and emotive topic - I wasn't sure whether it was an appropriate subject - but the news report made me so angry and helpless that I felt I needed to get something down as a statement - not sure if it's too morbid or frivolous - but it was written with good intentions

Harry - thanks for your comments on "The Racism One-Step" - written as a riposte to those who seem to think that racism only exists when the finger can be pointed at "whitey". Sorry for the delay in this reply but I have just returned from a long weekend in my old home county of Devon and a delightful stay in a small family-run hotel overlooking Lyme Bay -a million miles in some ways from modern London - my home for the past fifty-odd years.

Whilst I admire these soldiers of the Crown who sought to "join up" from their distant homeland, and recall actress Joanna Lumley's forceful campaign, I confess that although I understand her own reasons (father in the regiment etc.,) I fail to see the logic when carried through to its ultimate resolution. If it's thought proper to grant this right of residence to Gurkhas and their families - what about the millions of Commonwealth troops who also served under the Crown in various conflicts? Are they less "entitled" using this way of thinking? Emotion is not always the best guide to addressing situations like this - and emotion, as we all should know, recognises no logic!

This is certainly consistently thought-provoking and packs a punch from its own POV.I bought a copy the other day - not finding the Daily Express available and have to admit that other than the many pages devoted to femail(oops) interests, I wondered what all the fuss was about, recalling the frequent derogatory references to it from the worthies in BBC programmes like "Mock The Week" and "Have I Got News For You". Columnists like Richard Littlejohn fulfil the need for a Mr Angry to speak out for those who feel themselves airbrushed out of the story of a country they helped save and prosper whilst every other section of UK society gets its platform to utter strident views of its expected "entitlements" and "rights".
Let Voltaire be our guide lest those who complain about the likes of Littlejohn et al make themselves risible by their vehemence towards and intolerance of a bluntly stated opinion they don't happen to like.

I'm glad you've remembered him in words Ian. I find it too painful to think about - I'm not sure I could have ever written about it. I couldn't even get through listening to the news report without crying.
It beggars belief what humans are capable of at times - also what they are capable of believing. I wouldn't like to be in the shoes of the doctor who saw him 3 weeks before he died.

Steve's right - that's a poem in itself.
This is a moving lament John. Sometimes you don't need to be on your deathbed to have regrets, do you - and life is full of paths we never took.
Great to see you back posting.

Mark,
I like your metamorphological choice here,
(the scientists are still baffled about what actually takes place in that gungy pupa)
(But they`ve got plenty of psuedo- scientific
buzz-words that make it look like they`re not)

Hi Crabb - welcome to WOL. I like your profile page poems - hope to see some of your work on the blog section soon. Have you passed this way before? I gather from Steve's comment that you have - if so, welcome back!
Apologies - I think in my welcome message to you I said it would be good if you could put some poems on your profile page - I was "round-robinning" a message to somebody who hadn't got any poems on their page. I can see that you have poems on your page :)

Dave, Mike - Thx for listening and for your thoughts.
Hey Dave - we can fix it, was also supposed to lightly hint towards Obama's election slogan. Not sure if this came across or not?
Another slogan, more betrayed promises etc. I didn't want to use the full slogan due to its bob the builder connotation in the UK. I hoped to avoid the absurdity, hint at the slogan and say something inherently true about the nature of all this.
Mike & Dave -
Glad you felt the poem worked on some level.
I sort of knew part of the picture, was aware of much of this, but my thoughts were crystallised into words after watching Oliver Stone's Untold History of the United States and more importantly the Adam Curtis documentary Century of the Self. When it comes to democracy and the perceived notion of freedom, it would indeed seem that life is stranger than fiction. If you made the truth up, people would think it to far fetched.
Best of
Chris

Very bleak. But someone has to write about these feelings! Michael, the last line of the first stanza is obscure to me. And should "Bare" be "Bear"? I wasn't sure because I wasn't sure of the line?

Cy re ''Assignation'' you seem to be grasping here : ''This is very unusual, and very effective. IMO, the precise repetitions and small variations give a real feeling of fascination, almost voyeurism, and passing 'insignificance', like the movements of a crowd''. . .but, I love to be gripped by a mind...and I agree with you, but, I would add ''captivated''.
