Hi Shirley
Love the simplicity of your poems-but also enjoy the deep meanings they carry as in this tale of mans lack of respect for such a beautiful creature.
By the way, your illustrations are divine! Unique!!

I really like that poem Flashback ...
Hard to believe that people have now been flying for a century, so a sky unsullied by planes is only a folk memory - in this part of the world at least.

I had not thought about Adrian Mitchell, but you are right - his Tell Me Lies About Vietnam, for example.
Did not quite understand how Avaaz works though. I am loth to make a pillock of myself by doing the wrong thing, as I so frequently do.
Isobel, I have just heard today's news about the Unholy Roaming Emperor, Murdoch, whose influence has corrupted our politicians (all parties), media and police, throwing a shadow across your sense of privilege perhaps?
It seems to me that the sense of invulnerability that such people build around them is what creates the culture within which corruption flourishes (think Blair and British Aerospace for example; Cameron's inertia because of his friendships: he who has Xmas lunch withe the devil should pull a very long cracker, or summat). Now this. It is only a short step from what is happening in Bahrain, in my view.

It's a philosophical question. The theme was given and I have written. I can't say that I am a strongly religious person but.... I pray and it helps.

If Hamad is as bad as the poem suggests, then I think Ayat was very couragious to write and voice these words. I do hope she survives the one year sentence and that something can be done to help.
Offering words of support feels like pissing in the wind, when the opposition is so unassailable. Thank you for translating the poem and bringing it to our attention everyone involved. I feel so priviliged to live in a country where human rights are respected.

Hi Steve,
I like what you've done with this subject - scars as life's medals or marks of wisdom. It reminded me of the philosophy of oriental.asiatic carpet makers always including a small imperfection in their work, as only God achieves perfection. Well done - and welcome to WOL.
Regards,
A.E.

Hi Harry,
I enjoyed this read - almost a confessional. The sonnet form is particularly good in creating snapshots of life. This is bittersweet - haapy memories tinged with regret, well paced and almoist incidental rhyming. As Val says, the last line encapsulates the whole - two souls finding comfort in each other. A refreshing twist on love, memory and friendship.
Regards,
A.E.

Have you highlighted this situation with Avaaz www.avaaz.org/en/contact or +1-888-922-8229 (US)? their email & online campaigning is incredibly effective at raising people's awareness and gathering massive woldwide support for causes like this.
Thanks for sharing the story and the poem - reminds me of Adrian Mitchell at his most indignant best!

interesting piece Steve. It's often the imperfections that make people attractive or even beautiful. Enjoyed reading it.

Harry,I love this poem its so tender,`cosy comfort love` good .
Query - `To let the world` would sound more suited `To leave the world`
Then dispirit maybe.
The ending too was spot on. Good work

You conjured this up so well, Ann - I could smell and feel the wind off the sea. You have a talent for making the reader feel as you did on that certain day and time. The image of the feeding raven begins and ends the poem beautifully, underlining the fraility of man's endeavours while nature carries on unperturbed. X

Very much enjoyed this poem. Very vivid image and so true! You convey the humour well - amused tone. "In her lust for shoe-supremacy" is very funny! Great alliteration, btw.

I love the line "your last daft martyr". I feel that very strongly. The last 3 lines are tremendous. All the world weariness but with hope not quite lost. The image of sowing another tree is good - how much time will it take to grow another Eden, yet it is worth trying. Very bitter-sweet, just how I like it! XX

Thank you for sharing.
I find it a fascinating read because of what the shoes symbolise for her - obviously something from her past that gave her a sense of hope or pride - a gift from someone special... perhaps herself.

The wild,wild wolf
is under-rated,
as a symbol,
only hated.
In fairy tale
and hunters fable,
the warnings given
at mothers table.
Man’s fear encompassed
keeps wolves at bay
and children told,
to never stray
into the dark enticing wood,
where shadows pass by every tree,
and man must kill the lives he envies,
living wild, untamed and free.

Thank you Anthony! I enjoyed this just as much as the first time I read it. It is great to read a more formal style of poetry that works. Of those who attempt it, so few manage to do so without forced rhyme!
It would be lovely to imagine prostitutes being able to escape to such an idyllic life. I think the reality is that many get trapped into funding a drug addiction. I think maybe you are a bigger romantic than me...
What would I take onto a desert island? I'd have to think very hard about the shoes, myself - and it wouldn't be flip flops!
Lovely to hear from you again. xx

I love this. Almost love - there is nothing sadder than that. It doesn't bear the scars or disappointment of real love - just the sweet memories tinged with regret that Anthony speaks of. Beautiful. Really beautiful.
