I just thought it was his usual woolen scarf...Always a laugh listening to John - he is so laid back. Memories of that night just keep flooding back.

I felt very honoured to read that poem. I think she must have been a very brave lady and that came through in Steve's poetry. Perhaps we'll get chance to read it again one day.

A lovely and very touching poem written by Steve and performed beautifully by Isobel and Steve about Steves wife. It was such a shame it only got to be performed at the end of the evening. There were so many poets on , but I would have liked to have seen this done not as the last spot.

Yes - you can usually count on Jeff for a funny turn... except when it isn't - much of his new stuff being more serious - but very listenable to nonetheless.

I also think this is good. The last verse says it all, clearly and honestly. Who could resist?
I found a little insecurity in the pronouns - as in what exactly was/were the referents in the first verse.

Hi Cynthia, Thanks for the comment! You're right as well, it's a problem I come across time and time again not knowing when I've said enough! You'll probably see this again in other poems too, but I'll take it on board for future compositions. Thom

If lines like this just drip off your pen, I am so impressed. They are refreshingly different and imaginative. Your mental sea of words from which you select your diction for any given poem must be washing around in your mind, constantly.

Tommy I agree that Limbo is a barmy idea. The best presentation of it all I've come across is in The Great Divorce by C S Lewis

A very embracing poem. I like the 'choral' repetition.
But I do think it is too long. I was won over, and then a bit let down. Sometimes lovely lines, whole verses, just have to wait for another poem. They may scream blue murder, but the writer is the boss who must be ruthless against 'stuffing'.

Just to say I found your poems today and liked them a lot . I assume that the hands Fassbinder is asking about must be your hands which now resemble your dead fathers hands. I have my fathers hands too. This is my assumption anyway!

Unusual and thought provoking. I especially like your opinion of the church. My understanding of a christian after-world is that it is merely a ghost story to scare people into "acceptable" behaviour.

Thre is a joy and a vibrancy to this, and an innocence which is counter-cultural to our modern, cynical, doomy world. There is also a Betjeman-esqe tone here that is a refreshing antidote to all the smarmy clever-dickery that passes for poetry these days. It cheered me up, Cyntha, and that takes some doing!

Steve, great tour of sensory perception and human wanting, and of the role of coincidence and timing. I love this line
"Hope , like alcohol, is after all, addictive as all ritual,"
and the killer last two lines...
"I press the button to go down again.
I step out into another empty hall."
Good to see you at the Bards!

Forced rhyme? ...in a poem about arses, shit and toilet paper? - now that won't do...I suppose you could always swap it for the word numb...

Dave, Ienjoyed this greatly when you read it the other night at the Bards - even though I'm scatalogically sensitive. Great rhythm to it and great use of rhyme. If I have one wee criticism it is for this line ..."made me glum", which is a bit pooterish and comes across (to me, anyway), as a bit forced... fnarrrr!

A poem that brings out everyone's arse wiping anecdotes can't be a bad one! Let me see, what can I dredge up? Used to use many a dot leaf in my childhood, if I was in the woods and couldn't be bothered coming home. Often had to resort to newspaper. Times were hard so we used the Mirror...in fact, forget palm reading, you could have learnt a lot from my backside....A wonderful poem Dave - I thoroughly approve of toilet humour, as you well know. Cleverly crafted humour.

What do Andrex toilet tissue and the Starship Enterprise have in common?
They both circle Uranus - and get rid of Klingons . . .
Nice one Dave. (Prefer those "moist wipes" personally; very comfortable and civilised.)
