Thanks for your comments, Stephen, Graham, and Brian. I guess we can all stand down from the culture war on this one. The BBC has said these old battle cries will be played but not sung, owing to Covid restrictions. I see even the so-called Culture Secretary weighed in as well #brexitcantreverseimperialsunset. And thanks for the Likes, Tom and Trevor.

I still struggle with letting love in. It’s an unfortunate byproduct of living so guarded for so long. I get the pain and the depression. It’s likely that I’ve lived with it as long as you’ve been alive. It’s a hard journey, but when we remain open, we become much stronger creatures.

The Proms, being classical music, appeals to a niche audience. It's only the last night with its stirring jingoistic tunes that draws a wider interest. Lose these tunes, lose the audience, lose the TV slots for The Proms as a whole.

It's just a tribal thing, much like football crowds or the Women's Institute. I've never really been a mob person. Music, much like beauty, is in the eye/ear of the beholder. The prettiest girls don't go in for the Miss World contest. Am I making any sense here??

Perhaps predictable from its source. But then the Proms have
persistently neglected to include any of the major inspirational works
from the late Cornish composer George Lloyd despite nearly thirty years of polite lobbying. Hardly indicative of any real qualification
in the Beeb's idea of what is worth playing and hearing in home-grown music.

Mental health - or rather, its opposite - has varied causes and has
to be treated on a case by case basis. Its effects on sufferers and
others are impossible to define and every care should be taken
to negate them in any way possible. My own observations were
from some years ago and provided a personal experience of what
its existence can mean for those dealing with it. Places like Horton
Hospital, with its endless corridors, and extensive grounds, may
have seemed to some like a throwback to less enlightened days.
For those needing to escape the demands and pressures of life -
often a root cause of illness - they provided a retreat from those
demands and pressures, hopefully enabling staff (no doubt under
their own demands and pressures) to deal with each admission
according to diagnosis and need. They were certainly not ideal,
but at least those admitted had somewhere to go that offered a
reprieve and perhaps eventual relief from their own type of illness
in a 24/7 environment.of examination, assessment and treatment.
Set against the proper concern for individual freedom from
restraint and incarceration, there were always concerns that
eventually took precedence, and it appears that "care in the
community" was the result for better or for worse.

Thanks Keith, I'm a great believer in Stoicism, it's the one guiding light I've had throughout my life. I can't change the cards life deals me, I can only choose how I play them, and to be fair, I've got a great poker face.❤

Terrifying, but unfortunately so true! Naked, old -fashioned myopia. They've been saying this for years, but things didn't seem all that alarming perhaps, but now it is really a brownland, with the sun pelting down molten lead, no-one can now deny that the climate is changing rapidly. Hope the trend is reversible still. Really enjoyable and well expressed.

Good one, Greg. I am a great supporter of the Proms but the Last Night antics have always made me feel uncomfortable. It's not that the pieces of music in question are themselves without worth; it's just the overall effect of misplaced superiority which is sometimes generated.

The whole piece is beautiful, but that last part;

" My creator, I am ever in your debt
For into me, you have breathed life and love
At least I dream of this fate
Connecting the ground to the clouds above"

We get a glimpse of Heaven reaching down to Earth.

A simplistic yet masterful blend of both bleakness and color. Love the contrast!

P.S. I remember listening to this song for the first time on Parks and Recreation (no idea why I hadn't been aware of it before) and was instantly smitten by it. Excellent song choice!
