I like your style Cait. Original writing is hard and poetry almost impossible, at times. Good luck with your writing. You voice is subtle and nuanced. Nobody can teach you that. It's a gift, so work at it.

We are all lost and forgotten
somewhere
We all crumble and break in
Even and yet
Disproportionate ways
We mainly
Set out to
Tread wisely
With shaky steps
And we all want a
Bit of privacy
As long as it’s hidden
By noise
Until it’s so
Noisy and
It’s time to complain
Short steps
With long legs
Are rarely
Allowed
And we’re all
Shouting at the mirror
Expecting it to
Break
Surprised and
Disappointed
When it doesn’t
But it shattered
Long before
We decided to look
We were just so busy
Looking elsewhere
And pretending
It was

Ah, one of my all time favourite movies. The thing that got to me with this was that whilst it's beautifully poetic, it also, for me, had a really sad, stark, matter of fact, way about it which only adds to it's impact. Love it. It makes me very sad on one hand and on the other, very proud of someone who got themselves out of an abusive situation.
Oh, and the Russian ballet thing, nope, that won't work. If you want people to stop asking what you're doing, you have to make them sorry they asked in the first place, make it something truly boring.
I always used to say I was on a health and safety in the workplace course, you could see their eyes glaze over, and the internal question, "What the fuck did I ask that for?" Flicker through their mind.
Trust me, I've disappeared in the crowd many times before ?.

Thanks, Tom And Stu.
I'm far far from home at the moment and have been for several months now. I was just thinking last night about how many times I've been asked, "why are you here?" and how it's getting increasingly harder to answer.
I'm considering saying I'm with the Russian ballet next time it comes up--maybe such an obvious lie will discourage further probing.

Fish, the opacity of this poem is wonderful and as Keith said, intriguing. The rhythms are solid and build to crescendo'ed repetition of "glistening" and "darkened". Pressure and release, one of the hallmarks of great music. I, for one, don't need to know the story behind this. Don't want to, really. I find my own meaning in it. Thanks.

Hi Keith, thanks for your comments on The Artist's Desk. Much appreciated.
I'm with you, I only use my desk (the one pictured) very occasionally. Most of my writing has to be done on-the-go... usually on a train between London and Sheffield. I miss writing with a fountain pen, I find it freeing and inspiring in a different way to writing on a laptop; maybe because simply just 'writing' is so satisfying in itself it motivates you to keep going until you stumble upon the thing you needed to say.
I don't know why I'm so curious about the place people write; I'm not sure how much influence it has on the work produced but it still intrigues me. My previous poem 'Great Destroyers' was "written" by dictating it into Siri on my phone while walking down the street - which worked surprisingly well.
Thanks again, Tom

Well, I'm being self-indulgent - sharing this, perhaps again from years back. But watching the TV presentation this week reminded me of this 'work' and I decided 'why the heck not'. Someone new to WOL might still relate.
Some poems are like your heart's blood -a definition of your whole being - and this is one of mine!
Sir Philip Sydney wrote this line - 1500's, I think.
And no 'rose' again.

Jason and Mindy, thanks for adding to them with my offering as a trigger.
Devon, I do love a pun but they're generally frowned on, thanks!
Lisa, persevere but let it always be fun not a chore!
Martin i'll own up, I've no desire for the fray again. This was just a bit of frippery to be honest.
Don, it's annoying to think this works with hardly any effort, but that's often the way!
Hi David. Seeing that you have penetrated the mystery so well, I have to think this out - free of each other probably is right , as it was my master and servant at the same time, and was essential to earn a not always enjoyable living! But of course, we can't be free is we're wedded to an art and this can be one and give pleasure as we know. Frankly I didn't spend more than a second in writing it, so I'm perplexed about it's acceptance.
Thanks Cait for ascribing this as a poem. We are on the same wavelength.
Stu, I'll take that as a tick . Thanks indeed.
Hi Mark. That sounds like one of those easy to remember early lessons we used to take. There are quite a few to aid memory. Now I need all the help I can get!

Tom,
This poem makes my mind dance about as your words ask us to consider the venues in which we write and work, especially at home. A poem which teases the imagination and delves into our personal space, a place where we are comfortable, private and secure. A place where freedom is enriched by our surroundings and objects of some significance. I have a desk with a computer but only sit at it when transposing my work into type as I prefer to use a fountain pen and paper with a relatively strong knee.
A clever poem, one which stimulates the imagination.
Thank you for this
Keith
