DON'T WE ALL

I should have rung him

shared his decline

knowing he was dying

but I had problems too

don't we all?

we went back years

he liked a smoke, a drink

so natural at the bar

but we lost touch and he moved on

don't we all?

            I should have rung him

but it's too late I guess

now that he's passed away

but nobody's perfect after all.

Quenching the eternal flame,

the furnaces won’t burn again,

the northern dragons will lay still -

the Government has had its fill.

Flutter Kicks

The first time I felt my baby kick,

It was nothing like they said.

It didn’t feel like butterflies, or

A quickening within.

It felt like nothing I’ve ever felt before.

It felt like my entire life would never be the same.

And it felt like the love of my life

Had just tapped on my shoulder

And whispered “I’m here”.

THOUGHTS ON BREAST-FEEDING IN PUBLIC

(A Personal Recollection)

I well recall some years ago

Before I had a car and so

I’d caught the bus to go to town

I paid my fare and then sat down;

A woman was sat next to me

(I paid no mind and nor did she);

And so in silence on our way

We journeyed, till I heard her say

“If you don’t eat up” she began,

“I’ll give it to this nice young man”;

I glanced and saw...

A line on a page

Leaving only their shadows

Poem in response to #refugeecrisis

It's been there all week...an undercurrent of urgency, despair and crisis.  It's been hard to think that the minutiae of my day to day tasks matter in the face of unspeakable horrors happening for folks who are just trying to find safe spaces.  It's been challenging to temper my desire to help/donate/contribute in some way with the fact that there are also folks close to home who are in urgent nee...

Family Tree

You’ll find me in similes

like a leaf carried in the breeze,

in metaphors I’m climbing trees

I’m rooted in rhythm

I’ve grown a fruit nurtured

from a grieving allegory

soft scented and soothing alliteration

and free form

in case you ever visit these parts

that is where I’ll be.

If I get cut down in my prime

be assured I’m here in rhyme,

if you’re ever a...

A view from afar

The words "Jesus Christ", burst out of my mouth.

Whilst watching the daily news.
To swap the words from illegals to refugees
to change the peoples views,
with stealth...

Eyeing a Crisis that has overgrown.
A handful of dictators we have overthrown,
And yet we groan!
Sites we see such as " Britain First"
More like "Britains Thirst"...
For Blood.

Where do Britain's benefits "lies"...

Willow Hide The Night

Whispering willows conceal as night does.
Veiled in the trees, a slight breeze
Sways with grace accepting a warm embrace.
For two wanton hearts
The willow hides the night

A secret, can you keep? For the willow may weep.
Here again we meet, no intentions of deceit
As the dawn breaks emotions quake
the rain falls, the wind calls
For the willow to hide the night

One last promise to fulf...

Despair - The Word

Despair, ironically the word
Where print before me or even heard
Can change the mood or shift the tide
Can leave my lips yet stretching wide

A rule so often among my prose
Concludes we all possess some woes
This word induces I to clock thee
A word perhaps intent to mock me

A hopeless word by definition
Discordant from my current condition
Can sometimes leave my concerns spilt
And l...

The Mountain Poet

The mountain poet who climbs hills,

The Buddhist poet who cant sit still,

The writer who types as little as he can,

The boozehound who drinks beer.

love is like the ocean

Love is like the ocean, ready to consume you. But the only way it consumes you, if you fall into its trap. Struggling to get out but it wraps around you so tight, you can barely breath. Then you see him reaching for your hand. He treats you like a queen and when he sees he got you, he leaves like a thief in the night. Letting you drown in your sorrows and then you think can you make it for tomorro...

Also by michelle hatten:

im a good girl just have alot of bad habits |

do you follow?

Write me something beautiful

without a single sheet of paper

or the use of a pen.

I want the ink to spill

from your tongue,

as your lips against mine

become the words,

and the fluidity in your hands

create the puncuation.

Our breath will decide the direction,

as our kisses slowly

turn into paragraphs,

allowing the movement

of our bodies

to create the chapt...

Pain

Pain.

I am numb. I am emotionally paralyzed, can't feel a thing other than Pain. Joy comes and goes. It's a funny thing Joy. It's just Pains inside joke that only Pains gets. Be careful, not everyone lives with Pain. It takes one bad emotional experience and that's good enough to sell your soul to Pain.

I've signed the contract and now I'm trapped in a vicious cycle that never sto...
