Or there's this of course - the theme tune. I too remember The Sky at Night in the old black and white tv days - staying up to watch it with my dad. I saw Patrick Moore do his talk at Truro about 10+ years ago - and he played the zylophone too :)

Isobel,
Thanks for the comments
I was trying to get five (loosely placed) beats into each line, But missed two or three of them.
Your `gripping` has made me think about the human ability to `get into` this animal predatory stuff (I mean get enthusiastic and excited about it) I wonder what it all means about what -or who - we are?

Hi Tommy,
Thanks for your feedback on 'Mackerel In The Bath'. It was actually carbolic soap and a wire brush-but I couldn't get that to rhyme with 'feather'!

I have been/am very influenced by Patrick Moore and have been to his talk at Bolton twice, Currently if you get up a hill on a starry morning about 30 min before unrise,about7am, and look to the SE where the sun will rise you can see small faint Mercury at the horizon, above bright Venus and above that Saturn all in a line: then turn opp and Jupiter is bright, 4 planets in one sky!
The poem is great: hes left a black hole and Patrick may be uncovering some of the answers!

A wonderful tribute.
I had no idea who he was until Julian mentioned him and I looked him up.
Sounds like he was a nice man who shared his interests and passion for astronomy with a grateful and welcoming audience!

Hi Shirley.Having, like lots of other people, been through what you are going through,we know exactly how you must feel. The last thing you need is as you state in this poem not to be told to snap out of it.It unfortunately has to run its course. Our thoughts are with you.And you should not have to concern yourself about bringing others down-it is their problem if they lack compassion and understanding. Please keep bearing the fact in mind that you WILL come out of it-and obviously, the sooner the better.Bearing in mind what you are going through,it must have taken a great deal of effort for you to take time to read our latest poem and leave such a nice comment on it-lets hope this is a sign that you are pulling out of this dark phase.
Thank you ever so much
for this sad, brave and honest poem.
We will be thinking of you-good luck!!xx

I listened to the children at our school sing Take That's 'Rule the World' earlier this week and found myself getting quite emotional. Patrick Moore reminds me very much of my childhood, black and white TVs and the wonder at space. The song could have been written for him so I'm adding the link - not sure if it will work. School children are a lot better at singing it but there weren't any choirs on

This is quite a tribute and a great, well, it seems almost a lyrical stream of consciousness piece really.
I find it amusing that he wore a monocle and looked through telescopes. is there a monocular connection do you think?
And, sorry to bang the same drum, but he was not a trained astronomer, no degree nor nowt but self-taught, like so many of us on here.

I thank God for each one of you"
Have a lovely, lovely Christmas and a happy new year........and here's to the next twelve months - and more - of Stockport Write Out Loud!

Crumbs - who does like the sound of a crying child - but that does explain it. I don't suppose she was into breast feeding either - the only way I seemed to get any of mine to shut up - so I did it just about everywhere and anywhere :) Very discreetly of course!
Oddly enough, from memory it was often other women who were the most disapproving. Sometimes we are our own worst enemies.

Cheers guys
Is - well, the crying line was put in there because of the dates of the unsolicited suggestions...I was born in '68, my mother didn't like crying babies...hence not being allowed to cry. Unsolicited words right from the get go ;)

To begin at the beginning:
It is winter, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, cobblestreets silent but for the full throated mirth and cheer of one small tavern, its streets sloeblack, slow black, crowblack, but for the chink of light, the heat, the warmth, the words that leak and seep through leaded light into the silence of that night. For not all the people of the lulled and dumbfound town are sleeping now…

Great performance and poem,Laura - I really enjoyed this.
The only thing I'm not so sure about is the crying. I think crying for women is quite accepted. It seems to be more frowned on for a man though. Small wonder pent up emotions lead to aggression - a good boo hoo does the soul wonders!

– the hurl of tautened muscle
And fasten of fang and claw in flesh –
That's gripping stuff!

I'm glad someone did something for the passing of Patrick Moore. I think you've captured his essence well. It was the sense of wonder he instilled. His hyper intelligence just shone out of him - in a non condescending way.
What a fitting tribute Mike!

The BBC made a similar film in 1978 called simply 'Dylan' starring Ronald lacey (you may remember him as a nazi in Raiders of the Lost Ark)Laceys performance was exceptional and its something worth re showing on TV.

You're right MC. I like work with a good verse and a good -I was going to say ryhme but thats not stictly true, I like a good rythym and something with a good lyrical quality, and yes, something thats uplifting rather than negative or downbeat is always appealing.

I thought it was parts of Africa that did that but it's probably more widespread.
All I can say on that subject is that I would cheerfully emasculate the barbarians capable of doing that to a woman. It's one of those subjects that makes my blood boil - even in a comedy piece.
