Addiction

It runs in my family
I thought I was lucky
That the gene had skipped me
But I was wrong
It's not a substance I cannot give up
It's you I am addicted to

Years went by
And the fire that once raged
Was nothing but a barely glowing ember
I thought I was done
That I was in the clear
But I found you again
And the feeling is creeping back in
The weight on my heart
I feel it with every bre...

FIELD THEORY

Cut a line into half
and then half again,
this inevitably leads to the curve of infinity:
to that spike in the universal calculus
caused by a single boy’s once-upon-a-time enquiry
into the extraordinary to – ing and fro – ing of time and space.
This intricate lattice work of filigree and lace
through which gleams spark into memories,

On Beauty

My love of Beauty, nurtured through the years,

Of form and fair proportion’s served me well.

Yet often I ask: where does my true love dwell?

Within my soul; this heart; these eyes; or ears?

Does she conduct the music of the spheres?

Or, sit in silence sweet on Lakeland fell?

Are roses’ heavenly scent bound by her spell?

Her spirit surely lives in all...

: In Solitude :

From the subconscious mind,

Came a memory lost behind.

It reminded me of, gently then,

A music pure and fresh as rain.

I felt the tunes play in my soul.

The familiar melody to enthrall.

So long lost in the layers of time,

Heard it again - just as pristine!

Then back it went to nethermind.

A caressing whisper it left behind.

I felt it then - with some surpris...

I, You Implore!

My last poem for the month of June.

I stumbled into a poem

Rolled and rolled

Catching threads

Of a story

Watching

Waiting

For it to unfold

I picked apart it’s golden threads

Wrapped myself in it

Just like I was caught up

In a spiders web!

It told me of worlds

Where only the mystical

Live

I learned about heartbreak

And love

And we star as mere actors,

In its brilliant plays.

Every face, a pretty smile,

But Is it truly what meets the eye?

With all these yes’s your life is full of messes

You give and give, and what do you take?

Is there anything left on the dinner plate?

There’s nothing left to give you gave yourself away

They All Sent Flowers

They all sent flowers

And the flowers all died

And I understood flowers

For the very first time

A gift of something dying

Gently saying this is normal

We’re all beautiful but fleeting

And this is how it goes

They all sent roses

And the roses all died

Their petals dropping quietly

One at a time

We watched the petals falling

For Christopher

I cry because it looks like my friend, you was in such pain,

I smile my friend because I believe that we will see each other once again.

Although your body broke your soul remained the same,

I see pictures of your family engaged with you in games,

Harsh lessons for your children to the complexity of life's frames,

Lost dad but,

Strength, courage, res...

Treble’s going

“Look to! Treble’s going…she’s gone.”

I’d cry the time-honoured words when I was young,

my voice a boyish chirrup. Everyone

around me on the belfry floor where hung

the bell-ropes were grown-ups, so it was grand

to lead-off when the peal of church bells swung

to clattering action with the six-strong band

following after, letting fly our ropes,

those woolly sallies...

90's New Frontier (Pantoum Format)

I’ll catch you on the information super highway,

where the history of the future is written.

A world-wide wonder created for today,

they say our future is data driven.

If the history of the future is to be written,

this motor of modern society is the place.

Human destiny will be data driven,

in the digital networked cyberspace.

Cats on Mats

Cats on mats
by Tommy Carroll

 25th June 2019

Wittgenstein says he:
'Languge merely pictures facts'

then changes his mind and retracts;

'It's more complex than I at first thought,

my Tractatus has all come to nought

for there's more to them cats on them mats'.

Not afraid of the dark

I don’t want to close my eyes

I know what happens when sleep takes me

Memories and fears claw their way to the surface

Cackling while I squirm in pain

I am so tired

But I fear my sleeping mind

Replaying the moments that broke my heart

Filling me with lead

Seemingly impossible to pull myself out of those dark memories

I’m not afraid of the dark…but what is expected in tha...

Loses

Some loses are meant to be

For they pave the way for victory

We may feel sad and full of grief

But having faith can bring relief

The road to triumph is not always easy

We must persevere and stay busy

Though many hurdlles may we face

Our determination we must embrace

So let's not fret or lose our way

Our tomorrow will be a brighter day

For every loss brings a learning ...

In or Out?

Which of these schemes of life is best -
To stay in or be outgoing?
Though we just could stay in and rest
All the world is there for showing.

Whilst at home we might feel secure,
There's much out there for us to miss .
And as all the world is there for us to explore
It's something none of us should dismiss.

Outside there is so much to see,
It's not something of which to fear.
And as ...

Smile With Your Teeth

He said let's take a picture
Let all of these boys know that you're mine

I said that's alright mister
But I’m not only into guys

He just laughed and pet my head
And I felt this feeling in my stomach
A fire started to burn
But then he smiled

I knew then that I could be alright
With a man by my side.
When he smiled.
I’m alright.

He said you are ugly

Jumping Trains

They call this room, ‘The Pod’.
Outside. It’s slatted, curved. A brown tortoise shell.
Inside. I distribute Mirtazapine, Tramadol, Methadone
to the rapists, murderers and others.

Sometimes it is silent. Sometimes we will talk.

Yesterday morning I was with ‘Y’.
He takes a cocktail for his brain, his bones and back.
There is no family, no money, no hope of staying.

June 2023 Collage Poem - Kidnapped and Held

And Arkansas brought dentistry

to Catherine the Great, by way

of a heroin overdose

When pa was a dentist ma was music

promised and forlorn

a phantom takes an Uber to the

sun... it's got to be done.

Without a bitch he had a brew

Best was over the moon

but flew too close to the sun

The Titan tourist board say

'Don't come here!'

In the park, wit...

One Breath

One breath, silence!

One more breath, silence!

A third one, silence!

And there it is.... the mana

The Father of your thought,

The Mother of your emotions,

The Son of your willingness.

The seven rays of rainbow,

The twelve attributes of your Being,

The very core of you...free of history,

free of illusions, free of past, present, future,

Free from yourself.

The Last Chapter

I was tired of the situation,

The stress and the frustration

I wondered out loud

What if…. we stopped

It made you sad, my words hurt you

So you said goodbye,

You said goodbye with such finality

But baby,

It was just a thought,

Soon gone and replaced with conviction

That I want to go on

But now you’re gone

I can’t reach you

I saw you once and tried to tell you

Blood Sport

Left out to dry

The vacuum of your disposition siphoned the blood from my heart

Skin and bone fractured from the start

Rendered as an eternal distraction

Sleep well tonight my dear Marigold

For I have no sword to spare

You have wielded mine to inflict mortal damage

Bleeding out slowly to the psalm of your artificial tongue

Eyes of manipulation and mutilation

swaying with the colour maize of sunset

making the leaves follow the wavy trail drenced with you

enthralling us with it's waves of showers

Choices

Choice,  what does it mean?

To choose between possibilities,

but possibilities are endless,

What if we choose wrong?

Then we have no choice.

No choice in our future.

No choice in our present,

because of a choice in our past.

We must choose wisely,

then the possibilities are endless

and along with possibilites

come endless choices.

Clematis

It’s summer showtime in the garden
and this clematis is singing loud
Supported by climbing honeysuckle
a class act, flamboyant and proud

A stone wall is the perfect backdrop
for this display so fine and dandy
Giant but delicate stripy blooms
dazzling and fragrant eye candy
